Yes but an insurance company can't deny a claim if they have accepted the 17x9 wheels as a modification, it's in black and white. Any way this rim size law is only in NSW is it? As far as I know in Vic you can't have any part of the wheel/tyre stick out from the panel work.

I rang Just Car and they said they allow any modification as long as it is roadworthy.

There are definately laws about wheel width in VIC, NSW and QLD but they are different.
