Top RB20 Club... do you have over 260rwkw?

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, she wont win any dyno comps:)

Got the tune sorted, now with what should be nice safe ignition and A/Fs set up for getting the thing on song, also now with the smaller exhaust housing, ill be attacking Phillip Island this weekend with 230rwkws at 17psi. Its up and going with plenty of go at 4,500rpm, and apprantly makes good strong power up high going flat rather then tripping over:)

Will be running around a 7,600 red line, so not really any higher then standard

The cat comes out tomorrow to see how much restriction that is to spooling and actual power. If it turns out to be worth it, ill get a setup for the track thats quick and easy to remove/install that removes it for the track. Im thinking little quick release cam bolts so it can be don in 2 minutes:)

Will be interesting to see the difference in power at 4,000, 4,250 , 4,500, 4,750rpm. Turbo seems to make similar peak power, in the midrange im hoping it is far more responsive. My average power before was about 193rwkws, fingers crossed its up around the 200-205 now:)

As a peak figure its a bit dissapointing considering the size of the turbo and the ancillaries, but if it gets me the times at the track, and a 12.5 @115mph 1/4 mile, and proves to be reliable then that will be enough for me.:P

So may the durability testing continues...and when i get my data logger re-wired and can monitor and alarm oil temp, water temp, inelt air, exhaust temps etc etc, then well i may see how much more abuse the bottom end can take:)

Im in Adelaide, car in Melb:( But from discsussions it makes peak power in the 6,000rpm range somewhere. Apparantly at the rev limit i want to run its still making good power (7,500-7,600rpm), so the temptation will be there to bump up the rev limit a few hundred rpm:(

The base timing i understand is 15 deg

Ill get a dyno and a comparo chart with the larger housing going Monday night when i get back from Phillip Island

As for photos, i already got too many pics, i want some credible times:)

Sorry to bore with all the pics, but im going thru one of the love phases with the car again:thumbsup:

If you look carefully you will see the photos are from different days at Eastern Creek spanning over 2 years and different states of mods. LOL..you notice the licence plate but you dont notice the intercooler or difference in bodyroll:)

Congrats mate, just what you where looking for, well done!!!

Wednesday willl be the test for mine, tuning for the new pump (which will hopefully cure this random detonation problem) and 1.3bar boost.

Giving the intercooler a flush out and clean this weekend, I want everything to be 100%, as every other time there has always been a problem that held it back

if it can make 205rwkw with a 2.5" dump and exhaust and a 2" gasket on the cat, it should definatly make more with the full 3.5" striaght through drain pipe it has on there now :P

Well done mate, keep that RB20 flag flying

Chris

Glad to hear its done Roy. Good luck at PI.

Waiting eagerly to see the chart to compare to mine. What rpm range did you calculate your average from?

Also, if it made max power in the 6K range why did they keep pulling it to 7.5-.6k? Was this on your request?

I ask because mine made max at about 6,000 on the dot (225) and the run stops at 6,600rpm where it tapered down to about 220. They set the ecus shift light at 6,500rpm and the rev limiter is 7,000rpm.

Can I ask why you would pull it over 7,500rpm?

Even though I know mine makes its max at 6K I constantly hit the limiter as it "feels" like its still pulling very hard and I dont need to shift. Is the limiter a bit conservative maybe or would I be just causing undue stress and damage increasing it a few hundred rpm?

Well it makes sense to do the dyno run all the way to redline.

Ill have a look at the power it makes at various points in the rev range and ill have a think about my gear change points. Thing is if i stretch the last few hundred rpm out of it, when i go for the next gear, the extra few rpm may be the difference between 145rwkws and 180rwkws, well it was with the last tune and larger exhaust housing.

Think of it as the bell curve, you want to be spending all your time making the most power as possible, so to do so it can make sense to go a bit past the peak power, just so after a gear change you dont fall too far down the other side of the bell curve.

Would of been good for you to make it to PI as well, your car looks well sorted, what times were you doing at Calder? As the GTRs are typically the quicker of the cars down here, it will be interesting to see how it all goes. I figure i now have std GTR power, albeit wth different torque characteristics, but they need the low end torque more then me as they weigh 250-300kgs more, so will be interesting to see how the old girl goes compared to all the WRX/GTRs and the R33 GTSTS that are throwing out 250rwkws:confused:

Still keen to see the difference between the 2530 setup and the Trust setup now that im using the correct A/R exhaust housing.

But if it works out to be a quick package im stoked, its just that on paper i would have loved a 245rwkw figure, but not if it means driing like it use to, or too peaky, or too close to the knifes edge.

Next time you bring your car over mate we should get a back to back dyno run so everyone can see the differances in the turbos. I have doubts to wether mine is a 2510 or 2530 now, either way I am happy with it

Being a much more serious turbo setup than yours I doubt wether mine will ever get to 230rwkw, i'd be happy with 210-15rwkw for now. I think I might give some cam gears a try next to try stop the power dropping away sharply after 6100rpm. GTR cams still sitting in my cupboard too :P

I might be coming up to PI if I dont have have to leave my car in the workshop tomorrow and I can con a day off work. Having some dramas with something electrical I beleive as when its been running for a while and heats up, it struggles to idle and loading the electrical system such as sending the power windows up will stall it.

Hopefully nothiong major and I can drive it away same day.

Regarding calder, I am yet to do a pass. Before the fuel and ecu upgrades it would cut the fun with any decent power so I didnt bother. Just sorting a few niggling gremlins and then I will run it. Not expecting anything flash for the ET as the R31 IRS is shocking and destroys a decent 60 footer but hope to see 110mph.

Yeh apolgies, i have gotten you confused with another R31 GTSR pumping out similar power to you that was at the Calder Circuit Sprint 3-4 weeks ago.

Need to get as many RB20s out there as possible... and R31Nismoid smashed me at the drags so his IRS was getting the job done:)

RB20 POWAH!!!!!!!!:whackit:

Removed the 3" so called hi-flow cat, ran the car up on the dyno and over 250rwkws at 22psi :whackit:

Thats the sort of power i would have thought the turbo could make:):P:)

So wound boost back to 17psi and it now makes 235rwkws and makes boost 300rpm earlier. Let this be a lesson to all...3" hi flow cats suck. So i will keep it installed, but when i go to the drags or circuit ill drop it out for the extra grunt and response the car gets:whackit:

Can you tell im stoked. Just the fact that i know the car can now make those sorts of numbers with the turbo...ill take it in it baby steps to see how durable the bottom end is.

Plan is for the next few trackdays ill run 235rwkws, then ill up the boost to 20psi and see how it goes at +245rwkws:)

Perhaps the best thing at 15psi it makes 215rwkws...so i am all if a sudden stoked. :P

RB20 POWAH!!!!!!!! :whackit:

Nah, ill stick with running a cat and quiet exhaust. I wont miss the power on the street, the track though i want the engine to makes its power as easy as possible so that means dropping the cat out at the track.

One thing, ill see how the car goes at Phillip Island, but it seems as though it can actually make decent power with very good mid range and driveability, then im starting to think about spoiling her with a set of Tomei cams again:) The thought of making a stout 250rwkws at 18psi is very tempting.

I cant wait to speak to my friend that picked the car up tonight.

Its time to compare the results to a friends SR20 with a similar setup to see if there is any truth to the whole SR20 make more torque. The SR is a Nizpro built 200SX that made 230rwkws on a real dyno, some silly 260rwkws on a heros dyno:)

Me hopes that SR20 :flamer: RB20

    • yeah, that happens too.  I'm really enjoying 4WDing at the moment, seen a few beautiful spots and want to go explore more of this enormous country.  The 370Z got a clutch LSD in it and a track day, great fun.  Getting the back end sorted out really rejuvenated my enthusiasm for driving it hard, the viscous one is poo especially in such a short and wide chassis.  The VLSD unpredictability was more benign in a long and skinny Skyline.
    • With my pre/power I use a remote trigger cable(3.5mm jack each end). I turn tv on, it turns both on via ARC. Or, just the pre with the remote or its streaming software, turns on both. Not that difficult at all. Obviously,  you would also want to actually update/upgrade over other factors in your life(bills, family, other hobbies, etc)
    • Yeah, nightfall was very "meh". And I'm crap at pvp, so feels like everyone has cheats(it's just my lack of skill). Final shape has been pretty good. New raid and dungeon are pretty good. If you want to give it a go, probably wait until it's on sale. But, as usual, most of it feels very familiar.
    • This morning was Kingswood's Microscopic Wars. It is the album's 10 year anniversary this year and we went to see them play the whole album as a special show a couple of months back. Was pretty spectacular.
    • Yeah I would like to try and get a ADM car to reduce issues with insurance. I've decided if I end up getting this car I will set it up to be a sleeper build, leave it looking stock/dad spec on the outside I wonder if you can just drop in the 400r/Red/Z ECU or better still use a flashing tool to copy the map off one. Backup the factory map and then flash the 400hp cars onto the 300hp cars ECU?
