Rollcage Legality

Hey all,

The R32 comin in from J has a rear half-rollcage, just wondering on the legality of keeping this in the car/if it will make it over the pits? A few people have said "Yeah, its fine", while a RAW workshop said "there is absolutely no way they will let that over" The rear seat has been removed,and i don't mind registering it as a 2-seater if neccessary

Why was a RAW involved? If it is a SEVS import the cage must come out and seat go back in.

If its a 15yo import its up to the engineer, generally the standards are that it cant be in range of any passenger's head, so:

Remove the front hoops if you have them

Move the main roll bar back behind the farthest travel of the seats

Register as a 2 seater.

Should do the trick.

In WA after some of the Vehicle Inspectors being at RAWS inspections and seeing what is involved and how much of the ADR's we have to know they granted us permission to sign off a 15 year old vehicle after his has been perpared for rego.

It has doubled the amount of people able to sign off the vehicles so their is more choice and the cost has come down.

The sign off is 25 pages long and covers a fair bit, not just a bit of paper saying the car is roadworthy.

On the point mentioned "there is absolutely no way they will let that over" is nothing to do with the workshop but the inspectors, 15 year old cars in WA are hated by the inspectors and if you argue it will never pass so I would take it out, put it over for rego, put it back in and then get an approval for all the mods your car has.

They see it as we are here to comply street cars not race cars.

His "no way" call was actually in regards to the 2-seater idea - if they see that its meant to be a 4 and its just had the back seats ripped out, then they'll bar you. Again its just talk atm, until it actually goes over.

DRIFTT, I know what you mean in that its the inspectors not the workshops when it comes to these things - my last car had multiple things that the RAW said wont pass (pits) but he signed it off because thats got nothing to do with compliance. If i intend to register it as a 2seater, wouldn't it be OK to just leave it in, the way it is? Its only a half cage and doesnt even come near the front seats...?

to be honest i want to rip the bloody thing out and just get some rear seats in there, but finding them is proving problematic.

I had a 180 that I flat floored and it wasnt a problem, we also did it to a RX7 and was registered as a 2 seater, simple flat floor to tidy things up.

When a car is signed of you are also saying that "The vehicle meets the requirements of the Western Australian Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Regulations 2002 and Road Traffic (Vehicle Standards) Rules 2002." and they will get you for the slightest thing. As I said they dont like 15 year cars, have 10 to do not worth the hassle at the moment.

Yeah sorry I don't know about WA engineers but it can definately be done in NSW, don't even need a flat rear floor, just no seat o seat belts

cheers Duncan, hopefully it'll be similar over here! I was dead set on ripping it out and getting some seats but its sounding like so much trouble. Think I might have to go the flat floor. DRIFTT, how is it done?
