Hi,

My SII R33 Skyline came with one of those factory Nissan Screens that are used for a GPS. Does anyone know if i can use this monitor for anything else (eg. attach a playstation or dvd player to it)? there is a button on it saying TV/CD but everything is in Japanese so I dont have a clue what it means. Any help would be great. Dont want to waste this screen. Thanks

Steve

Usually they have an aux input so you can hook a dvd/mp3 player up to them.

They usually put the control box under the passenger seat, or up under the dash on the passengers side.

Just remember that the screen will more than likey be NTSC, not the Australian standard of PAL.

I've got the TV/sat nav stuff in the Stagea, I've ripped all the sat nav stuff out and will just use the screen. I've found (on the net) a small unit that plays mpg/avi/divx/dvd etc, also plays mp3 and comes with USB2 and a 20gig hard drive.

Very handy to load and play movies and mp3's anywhere you go.

Hey guys,

I had the same unit in mine. A guy in Vic Park on Teddington Rd, HiFi place, can't remeber for the life of me what is was called, does all sorts of mods, he told me he could modify the unit and make it able to play TV/DVD etc. The GPS unit with it doesn't work in Aust, as in Japan they use a different system, their's updates as you drive or something!

Can't remember his name either, think it may have been Greg?? He was pretty helpfull, knows his stuff! Go check it out, it's close to the lights of Shepperton Rd.

Hey guys,

I had the same unit in mine. A guy here in Perth does all sorts of mods, he told me he could modify the unit and make it able to play TV/DVD etc. The GPS unit that comes with it doesn't work in Aust, as in Japan they use a different system, their's updates as you drive or something I think!

So they can be used, but I don't know if it's really worth it in the end! I changed mine to an indash 7" touch screen unit. I've got a program which creates a DVD of your MP3's. I used an 8GB DVD+R and filled it MP3s. Can create a menu, background picture and all, really cool!! Program's called Audio DVD Creator.

i didnt know it was standard... mine came with a screen on top of the dash too... doesnt look standard... looks shoddy... theres a wire running down my dash.. and the monitors kinda stuck on to it.

but it still works tho  it shows me how fast i'm going (in digital ;)) and its got this lil F1 car which reprasents my car.... its still monitorring me... the only thing is its got the jap map in it still so im driving over oceans and lakes

its got a box under the passenger seat... tried to plug in my dvd player but couldnt get it to work...

Scooby_Steve or anyone with the SII factory option TV- can you post a pic of it for me? I just want to see how it looks. Does it just come in place of the double DIN stereo box?

Cheers,

Vijay

    • Yes, but it's not as easy as pulling a fuse on anything other than an R32. There's a routine you have to do, involving disconnecting a loom plug and bleeding down the preload.
    • A question for tuning awd, is it possible to disable the AWD? The stagea is an EA/T AWD, Toshi had said on a GTR, he was able to disable it and make it 2wd. Just wanted to double check if this was possible
    • Whoa, that's a name I've not see for a long time! Sorry to hear about the engine / turbo damage.  Fwiw with any engine problems it often really a case of just seeing what happens when it's apart, ymmv - I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the damage isn't even from the turbo failure, or possibly from a combination.  The airflow between cylinders isn't dead even, injectors can go off over time as well, with the turbos overboosting if you didn't have upgraded fuel system there could have possibly been a bit of leaning out - stock triggering is often a bit unreliable by this age too.  Basically its an old engine and a few things could have been going on, and you won't know how much work is needed until the engine is apart.

    • Its hard to tell really. The Q50 owner's forum talks about it a lot and has quite a few people directly affected, but no idea what % of cars sold actually had the block replaced. Also, there seem to be 2 distinct issues which both get diagnosed by Infiniti as requiring a block replacement (no wonder they are going broke) 1. "Porous block" where coolant mixes with oil through thin or poorly cast parts of the block 2. Head coolant gallery plugs not sealing. If I was noticing engine coolant loss I'd start with cooling system pressure test (as always) and then I'd pull the cam covers and reseal the coolant gallery plugs on both side before worrying about a potentially porous block.  If neither of those did the trick it would be put in a second hand engine out of japan; I haven't checked pricing but I'm sure there are plenty around by now as they've been in production 10+ years
