Oh yeah - one thing I forgot

Andrew - thanks for scaring the crap out of me a couple of times in the Rex - although we did overtake James so mission accomplished

BUT - make a mental note - when your doing 160+ down the straight into the flip flop at Winton - the last thing a girl wants to hear just before the corner is "brakes....brakes.....where are my brakes???"

Haha - well if the truth is known it was probably 25% my brakes getting soft and 75% me out braking myself. But I had to work my ASS off to get past Golgo in the first place - I wasn't about to let him past again just because he had a shit load more HP than me! LOL.

And keeping Golgo at bay was a lot easier than keeping Scotsman in his even more powerfull, more set-up GTR with cheater tyres. Still managed to keep him behind me for a couple of laps. I was possibly going a little beyond the 70% driving capabilities for those laps however.

Still - my impressions on the rex have changed a little since the fist time. Maybe having the extra cars around to give me a better comparison helped but they go alright. But as far as non-skylines go - that Yellow Evo 8 looked a damn impressive peice of machinery.

Roy will be pleased to hear I got the news out on the Epping/Broady grapevine last night and all that's left is a couple of plastic clips, some charcoal looking stuff and pics of the stripdown...oh and about $7K for the parts sale-o-rama/feeding frenzy :P

OK just joking. Sounds like a good time was had, but I had the diff out, which i quickly finished off to make room for the car, and am still having trouble driving a manual with the stupid back pain crap.

Sorry to hear about your ride Troy. Bugger!

Was going to come up with the EARLY morning ppl's but had the GF's work christmas party night B4 (Satch Clothing... WOW... can anyone say hollywood tape :P)

Was far to farked up on Saturday... got to bed when I should have been meeting @ Hume - sounds like you all had a great time.

I will attend and drive in a track day...

That's one of my mates in the Volvo behind you.  He took me for a spin and I was very suprised at its hadling and braking characteristics.  He scared the crap out of me breaking at about 80m into the flip flop. (last corner)  Volvo certainly have done their research on brakes.  It also had RE55's and Av-Gas with 20degrees advanced timing.  Was interesting.

It's no Skyline, but interesting 80's technology.

ohhh thats right I remember you pointing him out to me. Yeh he was a pretty decent driver too!

I gotta convince my mate to get RE-55's on the Z!

I forgot to ask you to give me a ride in your R cause I wanted to see what it was like @Winton.

Welp, all in all, a fun day. No horror stories to report thank god.

My friend Ashley and I drove up on Sunday morning. Only managed to get 4 hours sleep due to a nasty neck cramp, resulting from xmas party the night before.

Got to winton just after 9am, passed scrutineering without incidient, just a lose battery. Was thankful didnt have to go out with the first session, as they looked to be overly keen. A lot of track cars about.

Went out in the 2nd group, and took it very easy. Decided to focus on braking and cornering, rather than speed. Tried to keep on the track this time =)

Only managed to get out on the track 3 times in all. The second time was the best, as started putting the pieces together.

Unfortunately the 3rd time out, those who's cars hadnt broken down, were just getting ****y. They started pushing too hard, and trying to pass in corners. I guess my definition of a corner shouldnt include the sweepers at the back.

Not used to having to use mirrors, put too much trust in people to play fair. I had one guy sitting in on my arse, trying to push through the corner.

Saw him start moving over, looked left as im taking my line, when i see another car appear from my blind spot. pull wide to let him through, just as the next corner is nearing, the 2nd car cuts past me. Nearly took him out.

Thinking oh oh, this is too much, hugh the edge of the track and slow right down. Wait for a gap in the field to come back out, then coming up to the sharp left leading to the hairpin, some little elfin comes in fast, blocking the inside. Chose to go wide, and up into the gravel.

Car pulls up in a ball of dust. Thinking ok fine. Look in my mirror as i see another ball of dusty charging in on me. feck, onto the gas, give this guy some room. nearly ran up the arse of me.

Back onto the straight, round the hairpin, squealing tyres, look back in my mirror, and i see the green commodore drifting around behind me. decide its best to pull off the session. too muhc pressure to go fast.

Damn hot!Not a good day to be breaking in a new engine/gearbox!But i figured if it held out i had to be proud of myself  I really had to contain myself from revving it to hard but in the last session it was good to hear a fresh RB26 spinning at a tad under 9000rpm :P great to hear so many people had fun!

Was a great fun day, went over with a mate and our girlfriends, even they loved the day and are looking forward to the next one, was great to see so many skylines there and hope to see more there next time. i have a fair few pics, and i loved YLWGTR, and ADZMAX !!!! top 34's there were a heap of sweet 33's and i liked sevnth the R31, seemed to go pretty hard too!

I will get my pics up soon, congratulations to everyone over there for a top day, did anyone else get sick of seeing the dickhead in the old blue falcon with the locker? hella funny.....

    • NoS, 2 of the big ones.
    • Oh, that's grim. Something bad has been happening there.
    • Put an endoscope down the hole and saw this. Not quite all around the bore but a good 60% at least. Chin to the chest and towards further disappointments I guess.
    • 2 does "sort of" applies, maybe......but looking at what parts would be needed for the swap to get engineered, registered, and insured, and basically that's everything under the car, the modifications the make it legal would be problematic and horrendously expensive, all for a street car that just cruises around and hits a few twisty roads on the weekends Also, from looking at the NSW rules and Regs, with all modifications that is required just to make the car safe and not twist itself to pieces, and then actually get registered for street use, may still be impossible nowadays As for 1, when you add in a fresh engine, fresh transmission, rear cradle and diff, tailshaft, suspension, brakes, cooling, and all the other fabrication required, your probably looking at up to $100k to do it right, all for a 20 year old MX5 that is over engineered and you would never be able to actually use the power it has on the street, much like your beastie, which I love, but you actually track that thing and can use all of its powers in anger, in a safe environment  Hell, the old Bogan Cruise Ship had more power than I could use on the street, and in hindsight, I went a bit silly on that thing, it didn't really need the 500hp it had for what I actually used the car for, it was fun, but basically unusable on the street if you value your licence  As for cams, yeah, I'll probably book it in for them to get installed and tuned soonish, like next month after MX5 Mania are back at work....... and yes, I've already sent a email to bin the turbo quote and quote instead to install cams and a new Fluidampr balancer that will suit the 2.5 better than the OEM 2.0 balancer that is swapped over for the 2.5 install, as the balancer needs to get pulled to time the cams it's a while your in there sort of thing I did think a bit about flex fuel for a laugh, but being na, and no where really around locally anymore to get E85, I've binned that idea, so no sweet sweet corn smells are set for the car I wish E85 was more of a standard fuel, it's better for the environment, better for tuning, plus that sweet sweet smell we all love As for fitting in the family, that's not needed, as everyone in the family already owns a car that can seat 5 humans comfortably enough, the MX5 is "my toy" As for buying a car that is already built, nah, I would rather pick and choose my parts, I enjoy the process, and in the big picture, the additional cost is well worth the enjoyment, and the occasional frustration, I get out of doing it, albeit with other people spinning the spanners, and me, just paying the invoice 🤣
    • Excuse me, but 2) does apply 1) Would also apply if you consider how much is spent in the alternatives. Also there's the option of 3), buy one pre-built that you can put your family in (it's me, it's my car)   That said, I went on a ~500km drive the other day. I didn't use anything more adventurous than 3rd/4th gear at about ~3000RPM and 50% throttle and I was going as fast as anyone has any sense doing on a public road, with enough grip to the point where I didn't want to go any faster. I was obviously under the limit of the current car etc etc. MX5 with 2.5 N/A to achieve the same speed would be more fun for any road scenario. Maybe consider cams. I wouldn't boost it. The use case is just not there and it won't actually make the car more enjoyable unless you really do plan on wringing gears from 1st to 3rd (at least) at 100% WOT on a public road to 150+kmh.
