I'm getting a comfortable 266hp @ wheels with my hks 2540 wih a standard computer and a frontmount, trust airfilter and hks exhaust, but I am only running 15psi. The car I got it off got his peak power with it at around 20psi. I tried more boost on the dyno and it still ran reasonably rich but no gains for 16, 17 or 18 psi. I ran out of time and left it at that. I am thinking about putting on a fuel regulator and going for it.

Is this wise?

Will the standard internals be ok?

Your biggest problem will probably be the stock computer. Seeing as you cant change the maps, it'll start to freak when you run more boost and have increased air flow, it'll probably retard the timing to compensate and you'll end up with an ugly power curve. The best option is to change the ECU, the weapon of choice is probably the powerfc if you have a manual car. It plugs straight in and has maps to start the car and start dyno tuning it. Myself personally I'll probably get a haltech e6k because the tuning shop I use knows these in and out and recommends it highly. Remember its always best to get the ecu that the workshop you are going to use is familiar with so they can tune it correctly. Nice choice of turbo, I feel I will use the same one.

alternatively to the power fc is the SAFC, while being a 'toy' can still tune fuel curves and will do a sufficient job for its price tag.

rob: better than the 2540 is the 2530. the 2540 has a larger exhaust wheel but both turbos have the same compressor wheel. the end result is more lag but no more air flow/compression

2540r is worth 50hp or so over the 2530. HKS rates its own 2540r turbo 60PS over its 2530. I a single config the 2540 is hardly a 'laggy' turbo maybe if you had twins then again MarioGTR has had great results with twin 2540s over 2535/30s.

You could prolly get 350 rwhp out of them safely but boost is the problem with the higher than normal Compression ratio!

I think 1 bar is as far as i would go unless dropping this compression down with a mtal head gasket.

Also the pistons are very fragile this is what usualy goes first thats why the mention of the aftermarket Fuel management.
