where to put old oil?

They go darker, I wouldn't say they stain black though.

We use them around here on our retaining wall sleepers, garden bed logs etc, termites hate the oil and I guess it makes them last a bit longer aswell.

It will stain somewhat to a darker black, but as everything it will fade over time. If you want your posts to really stain black, see if you can get a hold of some oil form a deisel truck. That will definately stain black and for a long time too.
