I dare say your 200ZR runs the RB20DET NICS (it'll say nics on the plenum) ???

An great upgrade for the standard turbo is a turbo off an RB25. The standard turbo suffers from boost drop off at high rpm. It's a straight bolt-on, but you need the water line off the RB25 or a silvertop RB20 as the banjo fittings are bigger than the redtop RB20's (silvertop RB20's waterlines are same size as RB25)

As for bolting the silvertop head on the redtop bottom end, I personally would just buy a silvertop front cut, sell the parts you don't need including your redtop motor complete. That way it'll work out alot cheaper.

If you want more info, try R31 Skyline Club

200zr uses NICS type RB20DET in Z31 chassis. NICS engine is the earliest type of RB20DET and had around about 140kW in stock form. There's always arguments about the type of turbo on RB20DET's, but it is certainly a T3 flange with a 'small' compressor. The only Skyline ECU that would drop in is from another NICS engine and would make no difference at all.

As has been suggested you'd be better off just bolting in a later engine rather than changing heads. Since the NICS engine uses a 'unique' inlet manifold setup, you'd also have to swap everything with the head + ECU etc, and by the time you've done all that you might as well change the whole motor.

Your existing engine also uses a different sump setup to Skylines. In your case the sump 'bowl' is at the back of the engine, but Skylines have it at the front. To put a Skyline engine in your car you'd need to change over your sump and pick-up. I think it should be a straight swap, but can't say for sure.

Main limitation to performance improvement on your engine is the top mount intercooler. GTiR's suffer the same problems. You'd be best to change to an FMIC and maybe look around at what Z31 turbo (VG30ET) owners fit to their cars as it would also probably be able to work with your car. Try here:

good luck.

    • I would not be surprised if you are the only person on earth that has the interest/desire to do that lol.  The Haltech base map is a really good starting point, the car will fire easily and drive very well, even on mild boost levels. To me, following your advice sounds like some sort of ancient Chinese water torcher lol (this is not an insult Josh, never change <3)
    • Those car show concepts from the 2000's and 2010's like the Floria and IDx were brilliant and should've gone ahead, at least one of them. But neither Honda nor Nissan are thinking about affordable performance any more, which is truly sad.  Even if Toyota's liquid hydrogen ICE development reaches the point where it's commercially viable and the infrastructure to support it, Honda/Nissan would have to wait until Toyota allow fee access to their patents to offer it with any smaller performance models they released to take advantage of it.
    • A sporty manual RWD coupe with a IL4 Honda engine would only be a good thing I assume we won't see anything released for a few years though, unless informal talks and designs have been going on for a few years,  and due to the current, and future, emmisions and safety requirements, I assume anything "sporty" they would do would be at least some hybrid thingie And hopefully anything they are thinking of has nice lines, without lots of plastic and fake bits hanging off it like that horrendous FK8 that looked like it was designed by a 13 year old The other issue of course in the current market is cost, currently the type R is around $70k, a twin is around $50k Meh, I'm old and grumpy and would rather buy a older model car and waste my coin on that than buying anything currently available new
