r33 speedo question

ok i just removed a broken speedo sensor from my r33 5 spd gearbox as it was not turning the cable, this is how i bought the box. there was however no gear drive on the end of the sender, I have a feeling it broke and was not put back in properly but just to be sure:

if the shaft in the speedo sensor snapped what would happen to the cog and the other half of the shaft? will it drop into the box? because it is not there or anywhere near where it should be now

just curious as i may have to remove mine (speedo rarely works on the street -- unless im turning right and going sideways ??? )

did you have to remove the box to get to it or not??

i took out the speedo sender with the box in the car, it is a VL though so i dont know how much the tunnel clearance varies, box didnt leak oil ether (it was jacked at rear right), undo the one retaining bolt and it should easily slide out
