doridori32
can rotary engines ping? if so what are the consequences? When a rotory pings, it pings very loud.. Like 5 cent coins being thrown at a tin can. When it pings . It will drop a seal. Petar. lang
i have a rotary, yes they can ping, its not ALLWAYS loud. but yer pretty much dont expect one to tolerate alot of pinging. you also need to remember the scenario usually goes like this: ping>broken apex seal>hard apex seal score inside of housing as motor spins>apex seal shoots out exhaust port into turbo>turbo gets ****ed>apex seal goes back into other rotor housing if unlucky>scores other housing. your left with allmost nothing reusable... they are very reliable, but i wouldnt call them durable if you **** up your tune, they can die very fast death. Birty V2.0
I don't know if i'd say rotary's are 'VERY' reliable. The later generations are built to last a lot longer then the older ones. But i don't think i'd ever use the word Rotary and reliable in the same sentence even so. Morgs
Rotors are reliable, no doubt about it.... if they are set up properly. I.e. a properly built motor, with the appropriate support systems (Fuel, cooling) and TUNING (most essential !! ) Myself and my girlfriend have had 4 rotors between us in a couple of years among them some pretty big HP. The bottom line is if they ping they will not last; they don't have the sort of tolerance for detonation that a piston engine does.
