i was done about 2 years ago doing 125kms in an 80zone (i was doing 150 but saw the cop car and slammed on the brakes) was i in a high powered skyline? NO! i was in a stock as a rock 96 lancer, absolutely gutless car that was easily capeable of hitting 150kms in a heartbeat. im not condoning what i did by any means, but get over yoursleves by blaming the car! i was speeding because i could and felt like it, yes it was dumb, but it wanted to see how hard i could push my car on a big open (car free) road at midnight, to tell you the truth i dont have that desire since owning my R33, i know its fast, i know its easily capeable of reaching 200kms and fact is i dont want to find out how quickly it will reach it. if anything since owning my line im less tempted to excessively speed.

i'm sure you're very responsible with your car ... point is that 99% of teens and P platers aren't ... and the results are in the newspaper ... well maybe not 99% but its a large majority ...

and what is this magical thing that happens once you get off your P's that means you can drive a hi-po car? does some fairy visit you the night before you get your full license and grant you special powers to be able to drive a hi-po car?

the point is that you won't be seeing idiot P platers in the paper no more ... you'd just be seeing idiots... :P

good point hippy...........

guns dont kill people people kill people?? prehaps, but countries were guns are legal have higher rates of shooting........

the government needs to do something about the death rate of p-platers, cause it's not acceptable...........but the question is what?

hahaha...

check the age of people arguing with u Hippy, most of them are under 20

they might still wearing their "P"

no wonder they are so defensive!rant2.gif

I Know u guys might be a good boy, but not every P plater :)

learn how to read the newpaper title, then read the acticle. Sooner, u will understand hippy's comment...

i wouldnt mind seeing the stats on all road deaths this year and over the last 5 years sorted by age.

id would be good to see the raw data so we could actually make a judgement without all the spin, im not saying that they are fakin it up about a huge rise in p-plater deaths but really all the info im operating on is hyped up crap on the news and in the papers - and as alot of people have said they are only really reporting on any acco report with skyline in it.

but yeah i dunno if its any different than its been for quite a few years, ive always seen at least a few white crosses on poles in towns ive been too for as far back as i can remember.

Yea, statistics don't lie... but the ways they are represented do.

Stats can be manipulated to say anything the government/press want them to. I'd like to get my hands on the raw stats as well and come up with my own conclusion that people over 65 cause the most accidents on the road. Or Politicians and journalists are the worst drivers on the so we should ban them all from driving bewtween 6 and 11 in the morning and 4.30 and 8.30 in the afternoon (when the news is on hehe).

I use this report quite a bit for uni assignments:

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/downl...cident-data.pdf

Interesting stats from the month of Nov 04:

• There were 45 fatalities recorded on NSW roads in November 2004, which is 7 (13%) fewer than for November 2003.

• The main decreases in fatalities for November, compared with November 2003, were:

- amongst the 21-25 age group (down from 11 to 1)

- amongst males (down from 36 to 30)

- within RTA Sydney Region (down from 22 to 14)

This report is well worth a read, particularly page 8 (page 10 of PDF) which talks about the causes of fatal accidents.

In 2004, the number of accidents involving 'excessive speed' has dropped by 15% from the rolling average of previous years.

One thing I've noticed with the stats is that with very few exceptions they don't differentiate between drivers and passengers. One of the biggest differences between young drivers (

I notice there's very little push to have old drivers, who are also over-represented in the road toll, hand over their licenses. I cringe when I see an old person get into their car after taking half an hour to walk the 50 metres to it. Seeing the difficulty some of these people have getting around with the assistance of a walking frame makes me wonder how effective their car control would be. Going through a few speed cameras is obviously far more dangerous than not being able to see, hear or do anything to avoid an accident even if they do see/hear it... or maybe, just maybe, safety isn't the real focus of the 'road safety' campaigns?

there needs to be some sort of testing program for the elderly i reckon from 65 on you should be retested every 3 years to make sure you are still capable of driving a car that would reduce the number of older maniacs on the roads too.

Did anyone in perth hear about the P Plater who lost his licence 15 minutes into the double demerits period doing 140 thru the northbridge tunnel. The cop that pulled him over asked him why he was speeding and the idiot replied that he just wanted to hear his exhaust in the tunnel. The cop told him he would have plenty of time to admire his exaust over the summer while his cars parked in his garage (i know the officer involved pretty funny really). He wasnt driving a skyline but he was still driving like a total fool and this really needs to stop. The Governments need to get some independant advice from people who have knowlege in the area if traffic safety on some practical solutions for how to stop this problem.

This is some info on requirements for older drivers in NSW (from RTA website):

The most important part of the RTA’s role is to ensure that the NSW roads are as safe as possible. Part of that role involves requiring drivers to undergo annual medical and driving tests upon reaching a certain age.

For car drivers, annual medical reviews are required from 80 years of age and annual driving tests from 85 years of age. This is to ensure that older drivers are medically fit and are able to drive competently and safely. Annual medical and driving tests begin for motorcyclists at the age of 70.

While age is not the sole indicator of driving ability, there is evidence that the skills needed for safe driving begin to deteriorate as we get older, particularly from about 75 years of age. Additionally, conditions such as dementia may affect a person’s ability to drive safely.

Annual medical reviews are all well and good, but I think maybe 5-yearly after 60 or something like that needs to be brought in too. License retesting is another argument, but imho the current situation is inadequate.

Basically it's the same argument that's been put forward many, many times here and elsewhere - something needs to be done that isn't a knee-jerk "oooh look we're doing something" reaction.

id like to add my 2 cents and we will all need to agree to dis agree here....

Firstly id like to say that it doesnt matter weather you are driving an 80 model corola or a 2004 Enzo Ferrari, if you want to speed you will and weather you are thinking about the consequences you will still need to take responsibilite for your own actions.

Secondly i feel that the reason that P-platers and skylines are being so targeted in the paper is because there becoming so popular, it is simply the choice of weapon. At the moment you can quiet easily purchase a 94 GTST skyline for 15,000 then spend maybe a thousand dollars and you have yourself a 200RWKW machine that looks great and goes hard. this is the problem. Just think if the car wasnt so cheap then younger people wouldnt be able to afford them and they would just have to do with a normal everyday car leaving nothing for the papers to write about.

P-platers please do not feel that i am having a go at you cause i to am a P-plater and owned a skyline 6 months after getting my licence, but i used it responsibly, im not saying i never speed, or that i never had any close calls (and anyone here who says that they have never put a foot out of line then your a liar cause you wouldnt own a skyline if you just used it like Miss Daisey) but there are limits, and you can never put a price on your life or more important some one elses!
