Their really good turbo's and its pretty damn hard to kill it on stock boost 7psi. But upping the boost from their will generate more heat meaning the exhaust wheel will fly into you'r cat.

Its really hard to tell i've herd so many different turbo's fly apart on different boost level's some on 12psi some on 14psi some not at all on 14psi - this depends on out side temperatures.

Simple rule: Dont boost you'r car for long periods of time on hot days and on high boost - keep it at 10psi and it'll be fine.

But before boosting make sure you have all the components to go with it, exhaust dumpipe, front mount etc other wise you'r asking for trouble !

How ofter to replace them ? - You carn't give a turbo estimated time of death as it could let go when ever it feel's like it so it comes down to the way you drive. :)

Buying them are usally around $500 second hand. (R33 RB25DET Turbo)

lil jun stock boost for a rb20 turbo is 10psi well mine was.. i've got the s1 33 gtst turb on mine thats why im running 7psi

stock turbo shouldnt die at all on stock boost..

12psi is the max i'd recomend for the stock ecu with the rb20 thats the max i'll be running on mine untill more mods happen :) (computer, etc)

wouldn't recommend increasing boost without an aftermarket cooler,

T25 turbo for rb20det go for about $300 but make sure you don't accidently buy one for an S13 as the flange is upside down. Most workshops charge about $300 to fit including gaskets etc.

All good advice - Stock boost, standard ecu no probs with stock turbs.

My RB20DET with stock turbs lasted 110,000 kms b4 the exhaust wheel went down the pipe. Shortly afterwards the fuel pump packed it in. My reasoning is the guy b4 me decided 15psi was good on stock everything for the 12 months he owned it. 3 months after I bought it she shat herself. (I was new too)

Replaced the Turbs with GT2530, UAS FMIC, Wahlbro FP, Microtech ECU and then ran it on 15psi daily. WoooHooo - good times! and safe for my line. (Obviously aftermarket air intake and exhaust system)

I think i've been fairly lucky with my Rb20det turbo.

It has now clocked over 170,000km's and for 100,000km's of its life been running around 15-16psi. The AFR's have been fairly rich that helps the turbo keep cool.

Detonation and high EGT's is what kills these little fragile ceramic turbo's.

So make sure the car is tuned well afr's are slightly on the rich side if you are running high boost and you will be fine.

On the Rb20DET the turbo overspeeding is not an issue as the rb20det does not swallow air as well as the rb25det.

If the rb25det turbo were on the rb25det I wouldn't think about going over 11psi-12.

Which is also why you wouldn't really want to go much over 11-12psi on the stock rb25det turbo also.

:werd: Mine lived to see the 150,000km mark:) Actually the car was at Wakefield when it ticked over 150,000kms and at about 150,007kms it spat a gasket...but turbo was fine:) At about 155,000km my std turbo came off for an upgrade, but there was nothing wrong with it when it came off.

My car with the AVCR off ran about 12psi, with the AVCR on it ran 15psi, but only on cool days at the track. (i was running std ecu)

And from time to time i ran tanks of toluene which is mean to result in higher EGT...but it never harmed anything (Thanks god)

Make sure you read your boost level off the turbo, not the plenum, as a 1-3psi pressure drop thru all the piping and intercooler could mean you are running slightly higher boost then you thought.

My car is a 92 model for what its worth...has anyone ran crazy boost with the std ecu...i ask because i accidentally ran 1.4bar on my std turbo when i first installed the AVCR and my ECU didnt have any fuel etc cuts...so perhaps what i though was a std ECU was fiddled a little, but i still had the 180km/hr speed limiter:(...:confused:

There has been big debates on these turbo's.

With Water Injection and a good tune on a Power FC or Microtech you could push it to around 1bar boost with the factory intercooler but vented for more air.

Without water injectoin youd be getting hot intake temp's which will limit your stock turbo to around ~12 psi maximum on the factory intercooler or fit yourself a R34 GTT intercooler and up it to 12psi daily.

Do hot intake temps result in hotter EGTs? I mena if you inlet temp is 60deg C instead of 30deg C sure your car will run like a dog, but will the EGT be noticeably different?

Water Injection is a differnt levell, results into many things.

For example run 14psi on a stock R32 Turbo , it is BOUND to blow up on the track.

You cannot compare temperature's on cars with and without WI.

Run WI on a R32 you could run 1bar on the track garunteed.

EGT should drop allot with WI.

I bet Sydneykid uses WI on his RACE CARS with CDI to run more boost and cool the engine down!

Just dont buy dodgey WI kits, PM me if your seriously interested!!

If you can't afford a better turbo in the first place, then you probally can't afford to risk blowing it either.

If thats the case leave it as it is.

If you are looking for a budget upgrade get an RB25DET turbo, it will be able to run more boost on the 2litre RB20DET, and will give good gains. i.e better midrange and holding to the redline.

The standard turbo even on 12psi has piss poor midrange and tapers all but away at around 5500rpm.

Its basically a bolt on and i would recommend it to anyone, to help wake the RB20DET up a little.

So are you sure that running water injection reduces the EGT. As it was my understanding it was a combination of EGT and shaft rpm that causes the ceramic turbine to run home to mumma:) How does reducing the inlet charge measurably reduce the temperatures of spent gases from combustion?

And perhaps rethink the "bound" to part regarding the std turbo. With a 180km/h limiter and road rubber i was doing 1:56s around Eastern Creek and 1:13s around Wakefield, not just once but 20-30 times:) So i think it depends which god you pray to:)

I dont like the idea of water injection, sure it may works really well and result in a few more hp, but at the end of the day its just another thing you have to monitor, and i have heard to many stories of probs resulting in bent rods, worn compressors...but like you say its probably from the cheaper kits.

Mine is a 92' as well.

I found the fuel cuts only to occur either on really cold mornings at 5500rpm+ on around 16psi in 3rd gear or higher or on a warm day at a slightly higher 17psi at 5500rpm+ in 3rd gear or higher.

I had it spike accidently to 19psi and held to 5500rpm until it cut. Opps. :(

It never actually cut in 1st or 2nd.

When the R32 landed from japan with standard turbo and ecu i ran 1.3bar all day all night without a worry, and this was thrashing the baby!

You dont have to monitor our kits, they are totaly safe. Just refil the compartment ever bar of fuel.
