AFOAF just got back from having a check done on a company car. Performed by a well known place with an R,Q and a couple of other letters in the title :)

What I heard is just comical!

They decided to give it a full mechanical, after being told just to check the g'box (g'box check was due to the manufacturer having the car 2 months and still not being able to fix it!!!)

After not even identifying what was the problem with the g'box, offered to add some extra guff to the report, to make it sound as if it was stuffed, even though they weren't sure!!! (blatant fraud and lies)

Of the things they did check, said the wipers and squirting mechanism were all broken....just that they didn't realise the controls are in reverse and they all function perfectly well!!!

So what really does your money buy you when you get a check? Anything you want them to put down basically....and more.

Where is Today Tonight when you need them?

oh dont worry i got the same treatment with my line, the standard inspection was $130 bcoz mine was an import it went up to $170 all of a sudden coz it has more stuff on it, but they never checked all the so called extras. they told me that the rear access to the diff was blocked, and the acess to the gearbox sump was stuck, the hicas didnt work and the list goes on. anyway i went to the guy who did the road wrthy on the car and went over it with him and he undid all the plugs and i knew tha hicas doesnt work till you are driving over so fast, i know the reason he couldnt undo the rear sump coz he had a rattle gun and probably couldnt fit it in between the hicas and the diff to undo it. just pure incompetence! il never use them again.

WTF is the car!!!???

And well, fair enough, if the place that made the car cant work out the prob, why should a mobile battery service/ break in to car place be able to work it out.

they are pathetic, anyone who relies on them for a check on a car is seriously kidding themselves, if they think its going to come up "clean". If you have an import, sit down, get a coffee and wait for the pages and pages of things that are "wrong" with your car to come up. They are for road side assistance and checking over nanna's corolla, if that. If anyone wants to take an import there then you should burn $170 its more exciting!! Not to mention the things they check probably wont be what your worried about going wrong in a performance car anyway. If you do a search there are a million threads about them on here...nyway

thats my 2c others are welcome to disagree

Anyone in Brissy can take their imports to us at Midas Wooloongabba. I know the skylines back to front and won't give you any bullsh1t. We will show you everything we find and explain what it means and what it costs. You get a full written report and quote. All our work has a nationwide gaurantee. We have all state of the art equipment for minor tuning (not dyno or course).

Sorry for the plug guys.

....but if you want somewhere to take your import, that is it. I will look after it.

well when i did mine it was just to see if any basic stuff was wrong with it, they should know how to open a diff and gearbox plug unless your absoulutely stupid! thats what they get paid for! i didnt want them to pull the car down and rebuild it. just a basic inspection to see if any normal things that u check on a normal car was wrong and they couldnt even do that properly. i did my own inspection but i thouoght it was a good idea at the time to get a proper trusted mob to look at it, turns out i coulda dun a better job by my self. and there should be no reason they should charge more for an import bcoz none of the stuff they check has anything different to an aust dilivered car, so thats just a scam!

I got a certain company with the letters A and Q (and possibly a couple of the ones you mentioned too) to look over a mini I was planning on buying.

They didnt even pick up that the spark plug leads were on in totally the wrong order and was thus running on 2, maybe 3, cylinders. The explanation for the rough idle and poor performance was a "dirty air filter".

Never will I use that company again.

On the plus side, they saved me many hundreds of dollars in towing fees. 10k free? Bullshit, I was doing 20+ no worries :D ... Went through 4 tows in a fortnight at one stage, woo for lasers aye?

Hmmm well I have the opposite, rang up to get my 'line inspected, before I bought it, was told only the main RACQ centre at eight mile plains does inspections of imports.

They were great! Found big cracks in mags (which I didnt like anyway and got them replaced with ones I liked before sale) also picked up wrong hose sizes were being used, stock boost guage dissconnected, along with hundreds of other mainly cosmetic problems.

But yeah saved me from either having an accident from a Mag which would've destroyed itself sometime, and I'd hate to think if it did happen on the highway. Also I got to choose the replacement mags plus got $2k knocked off the price.

I was more than happy with my $130 worth!! But that is just me.

Plus I cant count the number of times I have locked my keys in the car and had to call them out to let me it :D

well you were lucky i got charged $170 bcoz it was an import, (dont know how they figure to charge you that and me different) but anyway they said a manifold line was blocked, and it was bcoz it runs to the stock airbox which has been replaced by an airpod filter. just litlle things like that, that they write that are in conclusive, why didnt they tell me where it was surposed to go. i could have told them what they found out! anyway i have had no probs with the car since ive owned it for 3 mnths now. so im happy with it. (but not with the report)

Hrmm.. I'm sorta with Ska on my personal experience.. I had a 34 GTT checked by them and it was very thorough from my opinion and yes I have had the report double checked by my local mechanic when the car was in for the first major service.

My report was done at eight mile plains and was pretty much spot on... Not sure on the problem you guys are having, but they do have a complain department. How about calling them up and express your concern/issues, at the very least they know what your concerns are. A business cannot survice without feedback people.

As to what you have mentioned 666DAN, don't you thinks its weird that if the manufacturer cannot fix the problem you would expect a 3rd party non-specialisted company to diagnose the problem?

when i bought blacky almost 3 years ago now they did a full inspection and picked up heaps of stuff i had no clue about at that stage, i got it for 130 too, due to the inspection i like cyrus got my car cheaper and with different mags due to spacer plates being fitted. Like nething you get both good and bad.

Needless to say i wouldnt bother doing it again, i had a leakdown done compression test, fully inspected the last car i bought and it still blew up 5 days later... what can u do...

this is so familiar...i have had 3 cars checked by racq...all had seized inspection plugs..apparently..same deal with the hicas ..."i turned the steering wheel and the back wheels didn`t move" was the answer i got when i asked how he knew it wasn`t working....the whole inspection plug thing is a straight out lie they use on every car to aviod any comebacks on mechanical failure of box or diff....WHERE IS TODAY TONITE..i like to put a new car thru as used and see what they come up with.. farkin liars

the BP at 8 mile plains is not RACQ itself mearly approved by them, or accredited or however it works, the actual name is evolution something? i know the mechanic there and he has built more then his fair share of race cars and wont take my car newhere else if it needs something done that i cant do myself.

I didnt go to any BP, I went to the RACQ Headquarters, you drive down past the big building down the hill a bit and there is a 5 bay garage, I will always make sure I specifiy there to get inspected.

Eight Mile Plains....maybe that's the problem..they can check imports but not locally sold cars :)

I'm talking about a Nabira wagon, the reason it was taken to a 3rd party was to confirm that after 2 months with the dealer...the car was still f#$ked. Because after 'repairing' it the dealer is trying to get their money, but it's not happening as the it's still screwed!

A certain 3rd party was asked to inspect said gearbox, confirm that it had a stall speed of about 100rpm!!! And give us a report to hand back to the dealer.....but the went on their merry way did something completely different, then offered to fabricate some details on the full mechanical.

The problem with this was the dealer will argue that the fee for the check will not be covered as they did other things to the car as well, they'll just pay a percentage. But it's not too much of a drama cause the 3rd party didn't get paid either :D

    • If that's the wiring from the factory, I'd be inspecting the loom everywhere.   Any signs of that anywhere else, and seriously, I'd get rid of the car ASAP before the electrical gremlins make it worthless, or it goes up in flames on its own. That is scary how that insulation is failing!
    • I should note too as I have all 4 wheel speed inputs to the emtron I now have the emtron controlling the attessa solenoid for 4wd/traction and launch control strategies.
    • It works quite well with the adjustibility within each of the programs of the turbolamik. Essentially p1 is drive and lockup comes on like a normal driver.  But in program 7 I have customised it to not request the lockup clutch to engage until something like 6500/7 when slip was the lowest.
    • Yep, I like that. The tags are only on the first post of a thread and we don't get huge numbers of new threads. Also, I plan to add some more report types and we could have a member report type like 'review tags' then members could flag if they thought a topic wasn't tagged correctly.  No way man, I dig the input. Thanks!
    • It's a valid thought. There's not exactly that functionality already (when creating a thread) - that's where the OP can use/create any tag they want. We'd have to come up with a way for the user to request their tags get reviewed or something. Otherwise the mods would have to review every new post's tags (for those that have them, anyway). There's kind of that functionality already exists to some extent, post facto of starting the thread, where the OP or any other user could report the post to admins, and request that tags get reviewed. We could do this already, and any user could already have made such a request. To make it a part of the forum proper, it would require an initial and an ongoing education programme, so that people know that it's a thing. OP based tagging/request for review would also require at least some (probably most) of the user base to be told that it's a thing they can do. Both of these things probably wouldn't spread too far and/or get used very much. If it was the standard approach on a lot of different sites, then it might do, because people would be used to it. Prank's approach to this differs from my original thought, by leaning into tagging. Which is fine - it's possibly better than what I originally suggested. In fact, I just went to the R32 GTR wiring diagram thread and added tags, including "Library". That's probably a good way to use tags and the idea of a library. We just have to drag together an (organised!) index of threads or posts that have that tag. I have yet to do any of my own follow up by pursuing worthy threads and posts and reporting/marking/tagging them for the library, such as the @Sydneykid stuff I was talking about, and possibly any amount of @Lithium 's and others' posts. At least if I tag them Library, we'll have a start.   Back to @Wazmond's idea as it relates to @PranK's, we might have some sort of a list of tags that are already used to scrape for this library. I'm not entirely sure how that would be presented or used, particularly if it got long. But it's yet another idea!   cheers
