I have been reading about people's fuel pumps failing or not being good enough to handle the power of their cars.

For this reason I was thinking of putting in a different fuel pump in my 32 GTST when I get it (it's waiting in Japan for the boat). I figure it's a safe insurance. Same as doing the timing belt.

I don't plan to get above 200rwkw, I don't think I will even get close to that. I don't have a large budget. All I will be doing is FMIC/exhaust/EBC/12-14psi. I may consider more in the future, but I think if I plan to 200RWKW max, I should be happy.

So my questions;

1) Is the standard pump going to handle this? If not, what should I look at? I have read a fair bit in the forums, and searched, but it seems all the people upgrading are aiming at a higher power than myself.

2) Do I need to run a relay and my own power to it? Or is this only for the bigger ones? (People saying they need to with the 044 in other threads)

3)I have read about people having an internal and external, do I need both? Why would you want both?

4) What does a pressure regulator do? Obviously regulates pressure...but at what point do you need one, and why?

I'm sorry if it has all been answered before, but I could not find the threads. I searched for an hour or so.

My suggestions follow;

1. With that list of mods you are going to be lucky to get to 170 rwkw, as you have no tuning capability.

2. The standard pump will handle that. The next step up is usually swapping to a standard GTR pump, good for ~265 rwkw, they don't need a relay or wiring changes.

3. There are many ways to plumb up a fuel supply system, at your target power level don't worry about them. Simply take the GTST pump out and stick a GTR pump in.

4. To get a little more out of the injectors you raise the fuel pressure at the rail. OK to do if you only need say 10% more flow, any more than that and it is better to upgradew the injectors.

5. Yes, it has all been covered many times. You just need to learn the correct terminology. Don't forget to search the content of posts, not the title of the thread.

You could possibily look at a Walbro gss 341 that flows 255 LPH. You can currently pick one up on Ebay in Aus for 180 including postage. I have one of these pumps are they are very good. They are a straight swap with the standard unit.

You need to be careful when selecting Walbro pumps. As you can see from the attached, the GSS341 is rated at 255 lph, that's at zero boost and at 13.5 volts. If you install one in tank with the standard Skyline wiring it will run at 12 volts, that's 215 lph. Then add some boost, say 20 psi (1.35 bar) and they are down to 180 lph.

Bosh pumps on the other hand are rated at 73.5 psi, that's a rail pressure of say 40 psi plus 33.5 psi (2.3 bar) boost. That is why, generally speaking, Bosch pumps are physically larger, they need to be to provide the pumping torque at their high rated pressures. If you are looking at running high'ish boost or upping the rail pressure, then this feature is more likely to appeal.

The same guys that tested the Walbro pumps also tested a number of Nissan pumps. If you take a look at the following graph you can see that a standard R33 GTR fuel pump out flows the Walbro GSS341 at 13.5 volts and 30 psi by about 10%. The standard Z32 fuel pump is 5% better than the GSS341 (the standard R32 GTR fuel pump is basically the same as the Z32).

    • I would not be surprised if you are the only person on earth that has the interest/desire to do that lol.  The Haltech base map is a really good starting point, the car will fire easily and drive very well, even on mild boost levels. To me, following your advice sounds like some sort of ancient Chinese water torcher lol (this is not an insult Josh, never change <3)
    • Those car show concepts from the 2000's and 2010's like the Floria and IDx were brilliant and should've gone ahead, at least one of them. But neither Honda nor Nissan are thinking about affordable performance any more, which is truly sad.  Even if Toyota's liquid hydrogen ICE development reaches the point where it's commercially viable and the infrastructure to support it, Honda/Nissan would have to wait until Toyota allow fee access to their patents to offer it with any smaller performance models they released to take advantage of it.  
    • A sporty manual RWD coupe with a IL4 Honda engine would only be a good thing I assume we won't see anything released for a few years though, unless informal talks and designs have been going on for a few years,  and due to the current, and future, emmisions and safety requirements, I assume anything "sporty" they would do would be at least some hybrid thingie And hopefully anything they are thinking of has nice lines, without lots of plastic and fake bits hanging off it like that horrendous FK8 that looked like it was designed by a 13 year old The other issue of course in the current market is cost, currently the type R is around $70k, a twin is around $50k Meh, I'm old and grumpy and would rather buy a older model car and waste my coin on that than buying anything currently available new
