probably because your odometer has been wound back at some point - usually a common sign. I wouldn't worry, most have anyhow.

What you'll probably have to do is take the cluster out, open it up, and replace or fix the odometer part which controls both the odometer and trip. Often it can just be a stripped gear.

Just gotta say that this is a very common problem, and I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't related to "hanky panky" with the odo reading between Jap and Aus.

Mine played up on the way home from buying it at a yard in Sydney. When I fronted them they said that they would get it fixed no worries. I then said that, as I could not trust the odometer reading, they should do the 100K service stuff (timing belt etc) as well.

No worries. Got it done at 67K according to the odo.

Anyone who has bought from a yard and has this happen should do the same. I think you will find that they bend over backwards because of implications of "dodgyness".

If you have imported it yourself, I don't think there is anyone to go to and you gotta fix it yourself (through wreckers etc).
