hi, just got a question for selecting wheels and tyres for GTR:

some people said GTR needs a set of wheels and tyres to be in the same size

others said wheels can be different (eg 18*8 Front and 18*9) rear as long as tyres are in the same size

which one is true????

Important thing is that overall circumference needs is the same, e.g. 205/55/16 is same circumference as 225/50/16.

Easiest way to gaurantee this is too have the same tyres/rims all round but as long as the circumference is the same there should be no problem.

so you need to check the tires dimensions, most tire brochures list the outside circumference so you just need to find tyres that fit the different rim sizes that are the same circumference.

different outside circumferences front to rear = different rotational speeds = attessa computer putting drive to front wheels too often = WORN out transfer!!!

With the GTR you need to ensure that the front and rear sizes are THE SAME

The reason for this is ATTESSA.

Once you start modifying certain parameters, eg different tyre sizes front/rear, the ATTESSA computer and sensors start playing up.

Even running slightly stiffer suspension can cause problems with the AWD system.

I do believe, that is the only reason for running the same sizes front and rear

I would suggest having same size rims front and back

NISMO32R: Hi mate, have you checked out a few threads or have some plans on which tyre?

I looked at Yok A539's but they don't manufacture them anymore. I also looked at Falken FK451's, ZE312's, ZE326's and ST115's. According to a few SAUer's reports, the ZE326's stink and the FK451/ZE312 are a budget compromise tyre, with a few more guys recommending the ST115.

The tyre guy my mechanic uses recommends (and sells, how convenient :)) Kumho KU19's. I've read a good write-up on the net, but was wondering if you or anyone else has tried Kumho's. He used to distribute Falkens, got out of it because in his opinion they were inferior to Kumho's; the only Falken he would use would be the ST115.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

There is absolutely no doubt that the circumference of the tyres should be very close to the same front and rear. I say "very close" because there has to be some allowance for wear, otherwise it would be necessary to buy 4 tyres all at once, all of the time. A worn out tyre is 3% ot 5% smaller in circumference than a brand new tyre. This applies equally to cars with LSD's, the tyres on the same axle should have the same circumference. But it don't think the width of the tyres makes any difference to the ATTESSA system. Nor do I think wheel offsett is relevant either.

It is worth noting that the same size tyre from different tyre manufacturers can have differing circumferences ie; a 245/40/17 from Yokohama is different to a 245/40/17 from Hancook.

Been thinking about wider rears and narrower fronts on GTR with same circumference, I think it could be a potential problem at the very limits of traction.

My understanding is that the attessa comes on when there are sufficient G-Forces to trigger it and when the rears loose traction.

So if the rears are wider than the fronts then if the rears were to lose traction then this could be at much higher speeds than the computer expects and then the rate that the torque is transferred to the front wheels may not be quick enough to pull you back into line before anything nasty happens.

may not be right and even if it were then the speeds would probably be much higher than you would ever be travelling. Probably more applicable to those with massive power increases in their gtrs whereby there might be a need for a more aggressive rate of torque transfer to the front.

Thanks for the info, most appreciated. The full name is Supra 712's, but I'm not sure where they fit into the Kumho product food chain. Apparently the K104's are only available in VIC, so that takes care of that. :D I'm tending towards KU19's atm - a friend of a friend, years ago, had an Aust delivered R32 and he never saw the torque split gauge rise above zero. He changed tyres to an expensive Pirelli, and the car was completely different and the 4WD engaged as expected. That has made me very wary of being a tight@rse on tyres, and I used cheapies on a car a few years ago, and when it came on boost (esp. in wet) we were all over the shop. *hangs head in shame* lost to an N14 SSS that day... hehe

hi guys, i just bought a set of 17by8 and 17by9 rimes for my other project (trx differ) and was think i might try and put them on the gtr for a bit as the tyres i want are taking a while to get here unknown eta federals 265/35/18 and the current tyres are lets say passed there used by date hehehe :Oops:

so i might see wot tyres i can get for these rimes with same circumference (federals)and try them on the gtr as been hanging out to run it down the trip again. Cos i'm interested to see how this tyres go ,will keep you posted

    • Hey all, not sure how active SAU is anymore but will ask away anyways. Just wanted to get some experience on the 2008 model GTR CBA model.  I've hit that age in my life (43) where I'm like fk it time to get my dream (midlife crisis) car. Looking at importing one in and seeing if these can be reliable if the main flaws are fixed up. Plan is to keep money aside to do the following straight off the bat to future proof it: * install a stage 1 rebuilt trans with all new bits and pieces.  * install a new Bellhousing from the later model GTRs. Or potentially an upgraded stronger version like MAD or ATR. Besides the above two things and typical maintenance items anything else you'd recommend doing.   Been speaking to a few people and the engine on these are very reliable apparently. But keen on the view of the community here. Hoping to find a nice grade 4.5 with low mileage in Grey. I'd go black but swirls too easy. Look forward to your responses and feedback. Cheers    
    • Do Alan and Keith work on Skylines now? I remember buying stuff from them when I owned my Ralliart Lancer a few moons ago. Definitely genuine guys and be excellent if they dealt with the skyline platform as well.
    • Hey all, I'm Gaston from Sydney's West.  I was a member on here when I was a younger lad and owned a mint R33 GTS-T. Ended up selling it and getting married having kids (yadda yadda) we all know how the story goes. Now I'm back with the intention to get my midlife crisis (dream) car ... a R35 GTR.  You'll see me about asking questions and searching the forums. Good to be back and can't wait to get back an Import again.
    • I have to put something here in order to post the photos. From what I could gather there's more enthusiasm for modified cars now than there has been for years. There were probably more younger people there than older (me included lol) which was a good sign.  It did seem like the record least amount of representation of the 90's era hero cars on display though. Like maybe one or two examples of S-chassis Nissans, and maybe 3 or 4 R-chassis. By comparison there were a lot of Civics from that era but in all there were about 10 - 12 EG/EK Civic Type R.  Euro exotics are always there in large numbers, led by Liberty Walk...... say what you will about kids using markers to scribble on a Ferrari F40, it did seem like a stunt to infuriate Ferrari enthusiasts, or Ferrari itself. I wonder if there's something more to it. Either way LBWK have done some heinous things to a Lamborghini Miura this time. They should stop now.
    • Engines and drivelines are not war stoppers for me mate, busted arse bodies and un-obtainium parts and panels are though Both cheap Brumbies I looked at had trashed tubs and a fair bit of rust
