erm this might sound very stupid. but i got no idea or wat so ever abt the technical side of cars...

anyone care to xplain the diff in a turbo chareger and a supercharger

oh and how much psi do u think a stock turbo on a r33 (rb25) can hold up to?

my understanding is that a supercharger is being run off a pully from the engine and is therefore running all the time, where as a turbo runs off the exhaust gas and therefore has lag. A supercharger may be running all the time but cannot provide as much max total power as a turbo. so basically the turbo has lag but a higher max power and the supercharger runs all the time but doesn't create as much power. that's my understanding...could be wrong.

Turbocharger, the exhaust gases blow the turbine wheel in the hot end of the turbocharger. The wheel on the hot end of the turbocharger is conected to the compressor wheel on the cool end of the turbocharger. Therefore when the hotwheel spins so does the coldwheel. The coldwheel spins which compresses the air coming from the air filter, and goes into the intercooler then the engine. In this case the thing to know about a turbocharger is that the thing that makes the compresor spin is the exhaust gases.

A supercharger is connected to the fanbelt and is therefore powered by the engine crankshaft. The crankshaft spins making the wheel inside of the supercharger spin compressing air. The air comes through the air filter, into the supercharger and is then fed into the engine. I'm not sure if there is any cooling involved in some cars - in my dads commodore there isn't, and i wouldn't think that cooling is neccasary as it only deals with the intake (cold air) and not the exhaust (hot air) as a turbocharger does.

So the main difference between supercharging and turbocharging is that the supercharger is powered by the engine crankshaft, and the turbocharger is powered by the engine exhaust.

any ideas on supercharging an rb25det ? cost and models etc, a stocker unit that will do 7psi should give a nice low down punch. any ocmments? what model did u use on the toyota kamikazie

there was an article in HPI a couple of months ago, where there had this little thing called the March super turbo, which has some crazy y-valve thingy which lets the supercharge compress under like 4k and then after that it passess onto the turbo....

Yes thats correct but i would like to hear and see the soarer one....the factory ones are quite intricate
