Have you guys seen this:

http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?...eMax=&SUBCATID=

If the link doesn't work then type in QP5035 in the search field on http://www1.jaycar.com.au

Might not be quite as practical gauge-wise as you guys might want, but it is supposed to be standard DIN size and could fill an empty spot on the dash...

Right first off need to pint out that I am a goober when it comes to these things, but in talking to friends who know have picked up some half truths at times. When the AMP is at high volume is it possible the amp is trying to work too hard and hitting some failsafe cut to protect the amp itself, like a thermal cutoff?

Yep, very possible. If you've configured your subs wrong then they could put a big load on the amp eg. two 4ohm subs in parallel will give you a 2 ohm load, so you have to make sure the amp is 2 ohm stable.. If it's not the subs will try and pull too much current and the amp will cut out.

There's also a thermal cut out in most amps, too hot and it's switch off, so if you put the amp in a small spot with not much space for air movement and you crank it up it could shut down.
