RB26 Oil Pump

Just a quick question,

How the bloody hell do you remove the oil pump from an RB26 without dropping the sump?

I can't get the pump out because the pressure relief bolt is fouling against the sump on the bottom..

Does anyone have any ideas?

You just have to bite the bullet and drop the sump. Easy enough with a cordless drill and socket adaptor.

What about the sump bolts that you can't get to without taking the gearbox off, do you need to remove the gearbox to remove the sump?

Use a 3/8 or 1/4 drive with extension and you can get to them.

Can you seriously get in there or are you pulling my leg, I can hardly even see them!

You have to remove the brackets onto the bell housing, which is 5 minutes work.......

I understand that it's impossible to actually get the sump out with the subframe in place, is this accurate?

I only need to move it far enough to look at the oil pump, and then re-seal it properly.

I've done it on the 25, but you have to be prepared to go in with a 10mm OE spanner to drop the oil pickup. Best to just reseal and bolt back up after playing with the oil pump.

What brackets?? Do you mean the bolts.. the whole bell housing & gearbox need to slide back at least half an inch to get to the sump bolts back there..

There are 2 brackets at the bottom of the block, onto the bottom quadrants of the bell housing, remove them. Then access the 10mm sump bolts with a 1/4 socket set using an extension. $10 @ supercheap but they are good for light stuff.

Do these brackets come completely off the car? The bell housing looks as though it is one complete piece..

The brackets are off the sides of the block and run under the sump, unless my mind is completely gone.
