What's the Sunshine Coast like ????

Recommended Posts

Hello Commrade QLD SAU'ers,

I'm seriously thinking of moving to the Sunshine Coast (from Sydney). Either Caloundra, Maroochy or Noosa (or somewhere in between)

So what's it like ?? I don't mean the car scene - That doesn't bother me.

What is the popluation like ?? Old , young, medium ?

How is the economy and industry

What about Jobs ?

House Prices ??

Are the people nice ??

Transport ?

Fishing ?

Girls / Women ?

Nitelife ?

Things to do ? Places to see ?

Thanks in advace :rofl::P

Have not lived in Caloundra for bout 5 years, but I still have a soft spot for it everytime I go back there. But it is half filled with retire'ees and half filled with tourist now. BUT I dont live there, but yeah I would prefer the Sunny Coast but that is only cause I grew up there, so I am biased

I've lived on the Sunshine Coast for 10 years.

It's nice, too many tourists around this time of year though who don;t know how to drive :P

Population varies depending on the area you live in, I live in Maroochydore, its right next to Mooloolaba whch is where the nightlife is. Places like Buderim and Bli Bli which are further towards to hinterlands are home to a fair few Retirement villages.

Jobs I can't really comment on I'm still studying so I only have a casual job which was easy enough to find. The situations vacant section in the newspaper is always quite long though.

House prices have shot up recently, can't really comment though because I rent.

The people here are pretty friendly however you get the odd few who are arseholes which is pretty much the case wherever you go.

Fishing is great, the maroochy river is massive and you can hire boats for next to nothing.

Girls are nice :D

Things to do... take it easy it's pretty much what I believe the sunshine coast is about, my girlfriend lives on the gold coast and hate it, just too busy.

Hope you find this useful

Thanks Gary.

I'm looking for a Seachage -

I have been looking at Coffs, Sunshine, Cairns, Port M, Forster, etc

I like Cairns the best - but maybe too far north (too many crocs) - Sunshine coast seems perfect..

Been researching - and seems that Councils ( Noosa, Maroochy, Caloundra, Mooloolah) are gouping together for a bigger and better Sunshine Coast. - And with the air port - much easier to access.

I like it :P

Yeah nice place B-Man... When I moved down from up north bout 8 yrs ago, the choices were Sunny Coast or Gold Coast... Either is good IMO... As Gary says tho, Sunny seems a bit more laid back - a little bit more "small town" feel to it... Goldy is a bit more hustle and bustle - big city life, etc...

Work prospects are probably slightly better at the Gold Coast, but you always have the option of commuting to Brisbane from Sunny or Goldy...

IMO, once you get north of Sunny Coast, things start getting a little bit "two heady" for my liking...

HTH

Whats it like? The "Noosa lifstyle" is awesome. It gets boring, but its the price you pay to live in tourist sytle coast town.

What is the population like?? Old, young, medium? Noosa – more an more younger families. Still get the old people, as with most place’s.

How is the economy and industry? You come to Noosa rich; you don’t get rich in Noosa…

What about Jobs? What area do you work in? Noosa is a tourist town, you work within these area’s you wont have a problem with work. The “trades” jobs are also another one, which you shouldn’t have too much problems finding. The more executive jobs.. are harder to get and pay isn’t always that great.

House Prices?? Noosa is like Sydney kinda with the market More so the “4567” postcode address’s. Budget $400k - $500k for an ok home within the elite postcode. The closer to the water the more money.. As you’d guess.

Are the people nice?? Some are some aren’t. There is a lot of elitism, and snobbery.. But then there are some awesome people. All depends what friends you choose to deal with.

Transport? Crap. Taxi’s are crap, I will not, and will never catch a bus. What’s a train? Lol.

Fishing? Used to be pretty good on Noosa River. Now its so –so. The reef isn’t far, not too bad out there.

Girls / Women? We have one nightclub… and one back parker “night” club. Both are only ok. We have quite a few nice bars to sit and chill at. I guess its what your into. We also have rough as pubs.

Nightlife? Is ok. Monday to Friday is pretty lame. The weekends are ok sometimes.

Things to do? Places to see? If you came to Noosa I’m sure you’d find things too do. After a while you’ve pretty much done it all though. Brisbane is only an hour 20 or so away.. So that’s not really a big deal..

Obviously this is based on how I feel Noosa is. Maroochydore and Mooloobar I guess are pretty much the same. I know you said you don’t care about the car scene, but its crap full stop. I’m down at Maroochydore most Thursday nights and Sunday arvo’s, and its full of kn00b heads, cops are getting worse. If you’re not a fool I guess you wouldn’t have a problem. Don’t get me started on the Noosa car scene, Myself and a very limited number of others ARE the scene.

Ahhh, it's heaven on earth and none of the gold coast crap. Used to live in Maroochydore but pretty much anywhere is good. Buderim for the financially able. My sea change starts in 5 months and I'm looking at the northern areas of Brissy as it allows me to do what I want to and is closer to the S Coast.

Good stuff Geoff - We'll have to catch up and have a beer and talk shit.....

Most of my buddies are after a seachange too - I wonder what it is ???

For me - I looked at house prices, quality of living...Plus, I can sell my place in Sydney , buy a place at the Sunshine Coast and have no mortgage - Plus if I even earn half of what I am earning at the moment, I would have more disposable income than I do currently....

Why wouldn't you do it ??

Cheers,

I just moved to the Gold Coast from noosa and there is no doubt that the car scene is better down here and there is probably "more to do" as far as younger people are concerned. However if neither of these things are of great concern than noosa is possibly the place to be. Its a way more relaxed lifestyle, its easy to find your way around and or get around so long as you have a car. There is limited stuff to do and the majority of the population are younger to middle aged. The economy in noosa is rather good and if you can buy in the right area you stand to make lots of money. Even still if your chasing a nice house near the beach dont be suprised to easily pay over a couple of mil. Depending on the size of the house and the closeness to the beach and centre of town houses range from 400k to 800k. Jobs arent to bad especially due to the new development at the moment, including a new shopping complex due for comletion late 05 early 06. The people are generally nice however there are area's where they think that they are top sh*t just because they own some crap house on the water worth 1.5mil *cough* noosa waters *cough* even still most ppl that live in there are alright. You'll find the people more relaxed and open to friendships as many are retired (however young they are) and or they make enough money to just have fun. Fishing is O K, thats about all i'll say. Women, not to bad, especially during the silly season. As josh pointed out there are only 2 nightclubs but there are many many nice bars and many many dodgy pubs :D.....thats about it, i hope this helps.

Matt

well i lived here for 14 years now i live between mooloolaba and caloundra, its booming at the moment heaps of new houses going in, jobs are ok for the population and there getting better, but if u want a job u will find 1, thats what i think, heaps of surf, sun and sand. ppl are cruisy, friendly not usually rude or arrigant. if u moved here u would enjoy! i was born in sydney but wouldnt swap here for anywhere like that again, way too busy, and find the ppl dont even like to chat when i was in sydney last there too scared your gonna mug em or sumthing. all i got say about sydney is bloody westys!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Hey 85URK, I live just behind the Kawana Shopping Centre... what colour car is yours? (so I know what to look out for). Did you go on the MSCIII?

I too originally came from Sydney (well, Penrith anyway), and would NEVER go back. I'm currently saving for my first house, which is a hard task as I keep spending money on my car!!, and the house prices vary depending on how close to water you would like to be mainly.

How busy is it? Well, road planning is pathetic, and development is slow as! Peak traffic is terrible, but once you know your way around, there are short cuts (or less busy alternatives) for us impatient drivers.

Job vacancies depend on your trade/skills obviously. Transport around the coast is buses/taxis only - trains are only to get you north or south of the coast.

Everything else has pretty much been covered - I hope that's helped B-Man!

well due to all the ppl coming here from other states! thats why! its also one of the fastest growing places in qld. hey insomniac i live in kawana 2, just down towards the fruit shed. i also was born in penrith! lol too trippy! i drive a white r33 gtst with 85URK Plates. and white mags. u might have seen me round, what u driving?????? (model, colour, plates etc etc) and no i didnt go on the msc3 unfortunately, my mate owns a gt forrester and they were having a cruise on the same day up at maleny and i went with him, and when i got up there i seen a heap of skylines then i realised that it was on! i was so pissed off, but next time 4sure.

Hey Guys - this has been a great help - So thanks very much.

I've just discovered that one of my good friends Father has retired to the Sunshine Coast. He has offered to put me up for a weekend or so and show me around. He is (or was) in real estate, so he knows what is good and not so good.

So looks like I might come up soon. I understand there is an airport in Maroochy - that's a big sign of growth. However, we don't want the area to get too big like Sydney do we

I visited the Sunshine Coast for a holiday about 10 years ago - I guess a lot has changed since then - I remember a nightclub call Rumours (I think) - Got very pissed there one time :) he he Too many Flaming Lamboghinis.....

What sort of Industries are there up there ? Obviously tourist and hospitality stuff. What about manufacturing ?? Any Hi Tech ?? My current role is as an IT Architect - I guess there are not so many jobs up there for a role like that ? However, I have 16 years of experience with computers and shit like that - so I'm wondering if there are jobs in that industry ?? Maybe I could start my own business - "Sunshine Computer Services" hmm I like the sound of that ;) Prolly already done though....

Anyhow - I'm too fussed about jobs - something always pops up. And my seachange is for a better lifestyle - not a career - so who cares - as long as I have some $$ to spend on food and petrol and the odd beer

Anyway - thanks for all the feedback again

Cheers,

good stuff b-man! you will get to see the life style up here your lucky u will be able to come and stay for a bit and check the place out not just do the tourist thing. u sound like u have the right attitude to move here anyway, laid back and care free! im sure u will find something in the computer field, just have to think what u can adapt your skills too around here. every business needs a computer guy for something. man if you were here when that place was open it was along time ago! i was too young but ive heard about it, thats how old it is now its no longer there.

Sea change? 35-45, had some success, not appreciatd fully where you work or are maybe more intelligent than the bosses and see an opportunity to wind back but still make money to live. It doesn't take a smart guy a day to do "a days work". Plus if I go back into my speciality the average package in Brissy is $115K a year and cost of living 15% lower. Still I CBF about the pressure and tap dancing around risk avoidance.

No you've chosen the best part of the nicest place in the world to live.

well...i actually migrated from overseas...i first went up north ( Darwin ) and have to say.. i'd never live there..that's just my personal experience though..then i moved down here coz my old man bought a house here at Mooloolaba..when i got here..i was like.."yeah, why not " LOL.. i have been here on the coast for 7 yrs. now and i have pretty much seen it grows and still growing...i must admit that i love the place..pretty laid back as everyone says..alot of tourist..and alot of job opportunities aswell...well..being a chef i supposed, job isn't really that hard to come by.

best thing to do i guess is really to come down and see the place yourself..look at the lifestyle,..and the job opportunities..im pretty sure there's some computer job around considering the numbers of businesses that are being build up.
