Yeah it opened up to around 10mm with the boiling water.

I just got a 100 degree thermometer from someone at work today, so I can test it properly.

Though I have already got a replacement thermostat from Nissan - i knew other shops sold them but wasn't 100% sure whether they were vehicle specific or not. I asked a guy at an auto shop last week and he looked up his catalogue and said that the company doesnt make for my car [and recommended going to Nissan] so I assumed from that, I needed a specific one. If he actually knew the parts were all similar he should have told me, oh well doesn't matter now. The nissan one was $37 - not a huge expense, especially if that makes the overheating problem go away!

fitted new thermostat last night, havent cranked it over yet, just needed to let the liquid gasket dry and now need to top up coolant - at least kmart had 25% off auto which I bought the Nulon stuff for $25 for 5 litres concentrated :) I am getting sick of buying coolant lately - this will be enough to top up and even do another change-over if there's still something wrong afterwards!

I have a feeling the orig thermo just got blocked and now that I have submerged it it 100 water a few times it runs a bit better - tested with a thermometer last night and both are fully opened up around 85 degrees... give or take.

I have taken some pics that I will post shortly too, for reference.

FCUK IT! I somehow managed to crack the thermo housing and am now trying to chase up a new one of these, anyone? From Nissan they are 2 weeks away Ex- Japan as Nissan don't have any to suit my car in Australia.

If someone has one in Melb etc please let me know ASAP!!!

Thanks.

You are not having much luck !

That's what happens when you have sleeping problems i guess, i need to go to insomniacs anonymous

I only have a soldering iron - which doesnt work. I was thinking of taking it to an exhaust shop to get it welded or something. I ended up using a Silicon Sealant / Adhesive but not sure whether it will work / last / survive in that enviroment [hot/pressurised] so I haven't put it back in yet.

It's only cracked slightly, about 3-4cm long, it hasnt snapped off and the gap is minimal but you can see through it!

How does the saying go, practice makes perfect? No, we learn from our mistakes? That'll do :P

How you go with the new thermostat? Crank the car up yet? Take it for a spin? By the way can you post a pic of where your thermostat sit on your engine bay if you could please.

Keep us update.

West: I tried to post a pic last night [from home] and got cut off the net b4 it posted

Will try again tonight / tomorrow but its not an easy thing to take a pic of - when its on the engine, I will also post a shot of my broken one!

Wrecker doesn't have a spare one available - only has one on a good engine [wont sep]. R33 housings are completely different I am led to believe both by my wrecker and Nissan for info.

I will try and get my one TIG'd - but will probably just order one from Nissan [Japan] & 'grin n bare' it...:sigh:

pics as promised

well according to Nissan they are different to r33 and the wrecker said they were totally different also when he looked at them though his 33 one was off the engine and the 34 one was on an engine, so

the crack is under the dark grey coloured part on the inside - its dark grey due to the silicone over it - you can't really see the crack in the pics

I did buy a housing from a local part supplier, was for R31 / VL [rb30 engines] and the bolt holes lined up but the hose was never going to fit over the pipe and it was a bit too short in length...

Calling nissan tomorrow at this stage which sucks because I should have fcukin just ordered it last saturday - kicks self.

Problem is long term I don't want a welded one in there and I REALLY CBF putting a welded one in temporarily and then change it again, which obviously will require MORE coolant and fcuking around!

:) argh!!!

I hope after all this stuffing around the problem does indeed lie with the thermostat.

From your 1st post is seems very similar to a problem I had. Turned out to be a lazy (not broken) water pump. $127 later and the temp, at worst, only gets half way on the hottest of days.

I'm hoping the same Paul!

Just going to pick up the housing from a TIG welder now, hopefully it came out ok. He said if it has too high a concentration of magnesium it won't work...report back soon!
