Hey Guys..

just wondering if there was an accepted level of boost run on the car where an oil catch can is highly recommended ??

:)

maybe anything over 12-15psi, but more with how old you turbo's are as they can pass a bit of oil...

considering puting one on my R32 Gtr just gota find a suitable catch can...

ive just upgraded the car to start running 12psi (stock turbo, excellent condition), but with the type and amount of driving i do, its unlikely to see 12psi on a regular basis..

stock turbo seems good - i suppose its one of those things that if i can get my hands on one ill install it, but i wont hunt for it...

Where does the oil come from?  ie; from where before the catch can?

what about with a new turbo?

Old turbos start passing oil so its a good idea to get a catch can.

Good idea to check youre turbo pipes and intercooler to see if there is any oil in there, if not probably dont need one.. Ive been told you need them for big hp and circuit work

Any not new engine running higher then standard boost should have a catch can

its not a big thing, but it does help everything last longer and run more efficiently by not getting coated in oil (intake/intercooler etc)

the oil comes from the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system which basically sucks the air out of the crankcase and camshaft area so that the air doesn't get pressurised.

This air must be precessed in some way and it goes back into the inlet system.

Catch can filters air before it goes back into the inlet system.

turbochargers DO NOT pass oil into a catch can. a catch can will only catch blow-by. ie oil that passes out from the top of your rocker cover by way of high boost and or revs and or bad rings. nothing will stop the oil from a shagged turbo entering the plenum
