I am planning on buying a R32 GTS-T with the RB20DET and my first upgrade will probably be a good size turbo with the neccessary support sysytems like fuel pump, injecters, ecu if needed etc.

I am wanting to get around the 250rwkw mark without doing internal work and without too much lag. Could anyone suggest a turbo, and support systems that i would need for this???

And a rough price guide if possible???

I'm not exactly sure, but it seems that a lot of people have done a RB25DET conversion into their R32 GTS-T. I think that it would be a little hard going 250 with internals on a RB20, but then again, that's what I think. I'm not sure, but definitely a RB25 conversion wouldn't do any harm to you.

well, a HKS GT-2530 turbo is a fairly common upgrade. you can get piping kits, there was a complete turbo & piping kit for sale on yahoo japan auctions a couple of weeks ago, but it's finished...

before you start going turbo, fuel pump, injectors, ecu. etc. think about if you are going to do an RB25DET conversion in the future, coz if you do change to a rb25, that money will be wasted, as most of the stuff wont be compatible.

well, it depends on how much work you can do yourself.

an r33 auto front cut. from justjap.com $3,500

installing engine is a simple bolt-in. only thing you need to do is rewire the loom. Not sure what a workshop will charge, but go to a couple of performance shops in your area and ask for a rough quote.

It's probably a days work if they know what the'yre doing.

you can probably get the front cut cheaper than that if you look around a bit, and you will gain some money sellign the rb20det (u could probably get around $800-1000 for it) and selling the auto rb25 box. Then u can flog the panels, dash, brakes, suspension, headlights, cooler and other stuff from the rb25 front cut

It sounds like the RB25 would be the way to go if I shop around and get some cheaper prices. And my dad is a mechanic so it wouldn't be too hard to do the conversion either.

By what you posted your saying to just keep the rb20 gearbox? Would that be able to handle the power alright?? and I'm guessing a manual RB25 cut is dearer than an auto??

can't comment on whether the gearbox will cope, but there have been a few articles hovering around on the forum (do a search) on the rb25 conversion, and there seems to be mixed opinions on whether to use the 32 gearbox or 33 gearbox. the 33 gearbox needs minor modification to bolt up to the r32 rear end i believe.

You use the ecu from the rb25, it's ok to use the automatic, the only difference is that it will rev slightly higher on idle, and revs will drop when you put foot on clutch (same as what happens on an automatic when you go from park to drive).

The most difficult part is wiring up the ECU's, everything else is a bolt in.

i'm plannign on doing this myself as soon as I get my hands on the neo front cut my friend has.

My opinion is keep your RB20 cause there are better engine then the 25.

You have an engine that loves to rev, can take heaps more boost which by changing turbos is what you be able to do and replacing it when she blows up is cheap. It also saves you all the hassles of engineering, rewiring and worying about the gearbox etc.

On a recent cruise with the boys I opened up my RB20 behind my mates R34 GTT with the NEO 25 and the usual mods, exhaust, airfilter, FMIC, boost, computer etc.

When he was changing gears on the limiter at 7500 i was pulling up to him still in third with 1000rpm to go. When i grabbed 4th i flew by at which stage he conceeded his loss.

I'm running a high flowed steel wheeled version of the stock T3 with plain bearings and it's very tired. I run 15psi all day and 18 with octane booster. I'm limited at the moment by the injetors and ECU. This combo put out around 200kw @ the wheels but beats are NEO that has been dynoed at 230kw @ the wheels.

But just out of a matter of interest, i was stuggling to keep up with my brother acending Mq Pass and he was in a stock atmo 4 door 31.

So think about what sort of power you want or need. Big spool up and top end rush that goes on and on or punchy torque from down low with no real turbo rush as she spools up.

Half the fun if you ask me.

before even thniking about putting a bigger turbo ......do everything else first ... more so brakes and suspension....no good having 200plus kw if you cant stop properly and drive it.. and on on standard internals... unless u live in perth ... i dont think its possible to try and hav a motor reliable and make 250rwkw....maybe 230 ..but u'd be pushing your luck.

dont forget a good FMIC and boost controller...

After reading a lot of stuff on what the others with bigger power RB20s have, they all say a good flowing head is needed. They seem to hit a wall before the 250kw mark without being too risky.

And just pointing out, if you spend all your money on an RB25 conversion, its going to be stock, spend all your money on a good set up for an RB20, its going to be quick.

No, your RB20 didn't beat the RB25Neo, your car beat your mate's car. The R34 GT-T weighs a not inconsiderate amount more than an R32 GTS-t.

Point is in the relatively light R32, you can get away with a little less torque, though look at the factory claims of torque outputs and revs and the RB20 isnt as bad as ppl seem to think.

That said a bigger engine is always a better start:) Hell im going to put a 2.6L Astron 4 cyl in my car with draw thru turbo carby setup..monster torque from the big block 4:)

general comment, is that rb25 is better platform to start with, in terms of mods. and tends to be a lot more drivable due to better low end torque (and variable valve control).

As mentioned, max power on an rb20 is roughlt 250kw. you can get 300-350kw from an rb25. Don't know of anyone that has done an RB26DETT conversion, but there is an rb26 r32 gts-t for sale on prestige at the moment, so it's possible.

    • I have done smoke test and can’t see any leak on high or low side.   checked pump and fluid can flow through. Removed the high pressure from steering and did smoke test and same on low side, no leak.   puzzled. Thinking why if it was all ok it suddenly went as car was off road for a year. Don’t want to disassemble pump yet as i can see fluid / air( compressor) can flow through with no issues

    • Actually,  just remembered there should be info in the threads (somewhere) about swapping to a manual steering rack and deleting power steering all together. 
    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
