R33 SII Fog Lights

Those how has stock R33 Series II fog lights,

Just wondering do they help? If so, what color should the fog light be to give best visibility? Just that My headlamp's are those optiblue ones, but the fog lights are those yellowish white. Should I just leave them?? I've driven into fogs before, and switch them on, doesn't make a difference.

Now, whilst I know it is illegal to drive with the fog lights on main roads etc, I turn it on when driving in the side streets or when I need to see the ground better. Is that okay, because they only light up the ground right in front of the car.
