Pushing it hard: Bubbling noise after 5500rpm ?

Recommended Posts

Posted this in General too, decided to move it here instead :)

When the engine is warm (ie NOT COLD) and I'm pushing it hard I get a bubbling noise coming from the engine above 5000rpm all the way to redline...

What could this be ?

I have a Blitz BOV, with standard BOV just disconnected... anything to do with this ? Detonation?

It's very concerning...

Pinging.

Whatever you do don't try and produce that sound again or you may soon say farewell to a piston.

Get the timing checked. It sounds like it may be adavnced too far.

DAMMIT! you sure ?

It really does sound like a wet tube bubbling under water.....

... if so, where can I get it checked NOW. how do i check timing etc ? should I take it back to the dealers ?

Hey dude.

I good way of checking whether its pinging from timing is put some Octane booster in. Pinging should go away. if so then your timing is too advanced.

Too hot! Does it do it at night? If it doesnt could also mean its advanced timing.

Skylines are timed to 100RON not 98 so ur under fueling it for a start

Or you could take it back to the dealer and get their techs to retard the timing slightly until u can properly get it tuned.

Hmmm... Peoples descriptions of pinging varies, most would say it sounded like a faint rattle.

Taking it back to the dealers is never a bad idea if its an unusual noise not present when you purchased the car. They have at least a 3 month mandatory warranty and I'm sure the odd dumb question is better for them than forking out for a new motor under warranty.

pinging = marbles in a sock :)

well thats how id describe it

is it misfiring? if so then it could be plugs as the std boost setup on the R33 increases to 7-8psi over 5000rpm doesnt it? therefore if your plugs are shit theyre failing to produce a spark to ignite however this is obviously misifring

its always hard to diagnose these things on the net as no-one can actually hear it. definately take it back to the dealer, even if its nothing youre getting your money's worth!!

I think you should check the ECU for error codes stored in memory. I think these will have any codes from the knock sensor recorded. But first run some octane booster. I'll dig up the self diag proceedure for the Skyline mean while.......

thx mate :)

Under heavy acceleration, when the engines warm and over 5500rpm sounds a lot like pinging. As suggested try some octane booster and go see if it still does it, the key is if you hear it dont keep your foot floored back off immediately. If the timings been advanced it can be retarded by moving the Crank Angle Sensor on the front of the engine, if you want it checked Speedworks have a timing light so they can check it. I found out mine was slightly advanced, but only by 1 degree's or 2. (add's about 2-3kw@wheels).

Rob

what?? I disagree.

Your car shouldnt sound like its pinging over 5500?

Do not move the crank angle sensor if u dont know what u are doing as if u turn it the wrong way or too far the other way You can damage your injun!

Sorry Rob but u didnt specify which way u just said "by moving" and that would be a bad move.

Every mechanic has and can do timing if need be, just a little tricky doing it to cars without plug leads

Dont forget to Regap those plugs to .8!

well just went for a spin it kyms car nice

the sound is funny

its like air blowing a liquid.

and low and behold the blitz BOV is leaking oil.

Adam when yours was doing this, was this before after the tune job that saw the piston go bang?

nah after

with the blown piston there was oil being blown through the whole intake system, the only breather point was the BOV and hence it came pouring out. like that night @ KFC and the bonnet was dripping oil :D ahhh good times

oil through BOV is not good, if it isnt a blown engine then its blow-by and running std boost this would imply that the engine is worn. get it comp tested

Umm I'm no expert when it comes to blowing oil but can i throw a spanner in the works? I have heard when boost is risen sometimes oil can be a bit of a problem in the pipes, although your boost may not be touched could an oil catch can solve a problem like this? IMACUL8 was telling me all about these things and sound pretty good... could this at all prevent the oil coming out of the bOV or would that be a complete different set of pipes??????

As mentioned I'm no expert in this subject but just a small theory to ponder and trying to give a NOW fellow skyline member an extra hand :-).....
