I was just reading a very interesting artical in "Autosalon" magazine (issue 29, page 31 called stop the bullshit).

In a recent newspaper artical that stated that there were more under 25 fatalities than in any other age group (574 in 2002).

The writer (Charles Kha) of the artical in "Autosalon" had lost all faith in the information provided by the newspapers and so decided to do a little research for himself. He started studying the Department of Transports 'Road Crash Data and Rates' document and had found the newspaper had neglected to mention that 129 of the 574 fatalities were under the age of 16.

They were including passengers involved in all road accidents. The figure for 17-25 year olds was only 445, compariable to the 26-39 age group at 444 fatalities.

This raises some serious questions as to how many of these accidents involve 17-25 year old drivers and how many of these 17-25 year olds were just passengers in other accidents not involving a 17-25 year old driver.

In another related artical in the Jan/Feb 2005 issue of open road, NRMA policy adviser states they have not seen any evidence that restricting the use of powerful vehicles would have any sort of road safety benifit.

Later on in the artical it goes on to talk about speed limiting vehicles, they also stated here that they would be pretty useless as most accidents happen in urban areas at speeds of 80km/h or less!!!

Really starts to make you question what we're being told doesn't it?

does that include pedestrians as well I wonder?

because i think a large percentage of road 'fatality' are pedestrians, and i think 2/3 are pissed or similar.. which would also be the similar age bracket not surprisingly. you get done for drink driving, but you don't get done for being a pissed dickhead stumbling over the road.

It's like - ok, today say I want to stand in the middle of the road because I am feeling a little dangerous. Now somebody comes along and kills me. It's manslaughter if the person is 10km/hr over the speed limit and "speed is the cause" of my death, and yet "he is all in the clear" if the person is under the speed limit. And yet whose fault was it to decide in the middle of the damn road?

yeah, its all bullshit.

you will find all the statistics you are seeing about this issue are all false. statistics are the easyest thing to fake, all the government is trying to do is give everyone an enemy to hate, and lets face it we the drivers of performance car are the easyest to blame because everyone else already hates us to start with. by giving everyone an enemy it hides the fact that they dont really give a damn about saving lives, instead they sit back looking at adds for houses and boats that they will spend all our hard earned money they take from us in revenue. they wont save any lives but at least they will be happy

you can say im wrong but that is my opinion

It seems the government is corrupt in a way, and all they want is tax dollars that people work their ass off every day for, the government and police, and the media who release these statistics are just a bunch of wankers IMHO.

it's not BS at all.........just a lot of people would jump to conclusions

Road Crash Fatalites means just that.........people who die in crashes. be it driver, passanger, pedestrian.

The newspaper was right, there were more under 25 crash fatilites....what's wrong with that??

If it said Driver Fatilites it might be missleading...............

there was a good discussion on this topic a while ago in the QLD forum. lots of gov statistics posted.

one sat for you that was posted in the sydney morning hearld

99% of prisoners in jail had eaten bread died so bread got taken off the menu

I DONT THINK SO !!!!

ALL THIS TALK ABOUT STATS IS CRAP THE MEDIA SHOUD BE ASHAMED

the general public dont believe us...they still believe the damn box in front of them.....

try to create an awareness within the general public...hold more cruises....cruises that get peeps attentions....and whilst they might b put off by the sight....if they so much as get the hint of skyline drivers...or drivers of any hi-performance cars are sensible people, and not goons that love the need for speed....then soon enuf...they will swing their vote and align themselves with us....instead of BS tv

thats wat me thinx anywayz

Bloody good point, all the gummint / rta / police need when road tragedies occur is someone to blame. It happens all across the spectrum of tragedies - the canberra bushfies is one that springs to mind - these were natural disasters, from memory i think as i remember thinking "why are they trying to find someone to blame for a natural disaster??!!" It just plain s@#ts me!!!

I know road accidents are different because it involves people making choices and decisions about their own actions. A majority of these accidents are just that, accidents. Its a small minority of individuals who think they're michael schumacher when they get behind the wheel that tarnish the reputation for young performance car enthusiasts trying to do the right thing. Then the powers that be make a big song and dance about cerfews, banning certain types of cars for different levels licenses etc...bulls@#t - all of it - its all about raising revenue and pointing the blame at the least represented age group...

actually there's speculation that the canberra bush fires were started by arsonist or by accident (people throwing cig butts out the window etc) and even so, so many people woudldnt have lost their homes if the correct firebreaks were made and the developers didnt build right up aginst bush land......

mmm yeah bad example - wasn't sure on the full story on that one, apologies anyone.

my point remains though, authorities always try and make a scapegoat out of someone in the event of accidents...the simple truth would be easier for most people to accept. Rather than waste time and point the finger at whoever they feel is responsible, actually do something about it...

Its all in how they word the statement, nothing to do with the stats themselves... you can twist stats to look however you want by carefully wording the statement and 'omitting' certain information... eg. the bit about 129 of the fatalities being under 16yrs old or the fact that they included passengers in the study... oh it would be written there somewhere...in fine print...down the bottom of the page...

hehe, slightly unrelated, but... when I came to australia for xmas, several (non-performance orientated plebs) people made the comment - "p-plate accidents have become really bad, especially driving... what's that car called?"

my reaction was always - "has any one taken into account that there is now a three year p plate system? Therefore, there are three times as many p-platers on the roads. Therefore, there are, quite possibly, three times as many p-plater accidents."

guaranteed to create a blank stare - every time

bloody good point...!

email 60 minutes

It wouldn't do any good contacting the mass media (60 minutes, ACA, Today tonight, the daily telegraph etc. etc.) because they're the ones pedeling this misleading information.

This time it's not the governmet that's at fault, it's the media who is interpreting and presenting the information in a misleading way.

About the only people in the media who might be interested in a story like this would be Media Watch, but even then it would only create limited exposure.

i recently was reading the jan issue of 'wheels', called 'Stop, You're Killing Me.'

theres a small graph showing that 49% killers are from guns, and 99% are from cars. (note this is police!) they kill more by the car chases and as says here, 'What's not responsible, however, is the kind of policy that increases the danger to the community by preventing two trained officers in a V8 commadore from nailing... and you get the point. This is the 99% of the deaths caused on the roads according to 'wheels'.

and most of the time they are after p platers, so why increase the number of them? do they think of p platers as a hunting sport? the more they see the more they can bust for nothing?

pffft

True about the officers DG..but how easy would it be if thieves/speeding drvers knew all they had to do was speed a bit and they will get away from the cops. Maybe the cops need more stable cars...awd and /or a better system in place to coordinate other patrol cars and set up road blocks etc, Not something that will be solved here but I can respect what the cops do for a living, even if there are some bad ones. Like with everything :D

    • Just wanted to pop in an update on my setup. The CD swap has been great, I love the mazworks housing for the overall simplicity. I ended up sealing my trans tunnel with a thin sheet of aluminum reused some of the holes on the trans tunnel, and laid some window sealing EPS foam around the edges. Works great, really quieted things down and sealed up the car.  As for the power comment. Right now I am also running about 650whp. with the way the bell housing is attached to the face of the transmission I have zero doubts it would be fine, mainly because the input shaft and main shaft bearings are seated into the bell housing adapter. This means the load is NOT on the bolts to maintain the power, rather into he casing of the bell housing; Yes the bolts are doing some work there, but with both shafts locked in zero worries.  End of the day, the Mazworks solution is the easiest and safest. no need to take your trans to a shop to get milled perfectly, it fits with minimal clearancing, and you can use all your existing clutch and flywheel.  Driving wise the CD has been great compared to the big box, I'll probably swap my final drive at some point. The serial 9 shifter is gooooood, my only qualm is how tight it is, it takes a fair bit to get use to, 5th and 6th are a bit eh/hard to find at times, but maybe I need re-adjusting, and I think my clutch master is very tired and needs a rebuild.
    • If you are keen, have a look at my build thread. Car is for sale for the right money or straight swap for a F80 M3 LCI.
    • Welcome mate.  No point in over thinking it, buying any one of those cars you mentioned is not a smart or logical choice with the availability of many "better" (re price to performance) cars available to you.  The heart wants what the heart wants, buy whatever it leads you too.
    • Hey everyone! Im so grateful to be apart of this community and ill do my best to be apart of this. Firstly, i'm not disclosing my real name due to in real life circumstances surrounding my privacy and public image (sorry lol) Secondly, The only thing personal I am willing to share is that I'm from Sydney and a descendant of one of Sydneys largest mortgage firms. I got gifted my first ever car, a 2022 Porsche Cayenne and I love it to death. Ive been driving it for about 5 or 6 months now and honestly Im so grateful for my parents for gifting me this vehicle. However recently I've been working my ass off to afford my second car (which I need help deciding soooooo community help me out please?). Once decided, im planning to try modify it myself. Recent I've been thinking about getting a Skyline, particularly a 25GT or GT-V, yes I know overrated as hell, but I'm also considering a Chaser which I recently came to love. However my dream is to one day own a 180SX (So hard to find clean versions and im not really into importing).  Lastly before I send this off, I want to apologize if I sound tacky or pretentious. I try not to and want to genuinely learn from everyone and anyone. (Im no expert in this area) Thanks for reading!
