Interested in hearing peoples thoughts on whether Skyline (imports etc) are good drivers.

I have noticed recently in North-Western Sydney (where i live) more and more Skylines, and it would seem that it is now compulsory to pull a burnout etc. or want to race.

Each to their own and people should be allowed to enjoy their cars in their own ways, but when a white R33 pulls 2nd gear and gives the old girl a good hook to get it sideways and almost takes you out along with other traffic, well, i cant even begin to defend this type of driving. (ps it was in heavy traffic)

On the news last week, in SA i think, a Silvia owner had a big'n, he walked away but the passenger was badly burnt.

I hear people airing their grievances re-police etc, but i have to say i have witnessed STUPID driving, not sporting or speeding, but STUPID and i have to say it is more commonly Skyline drivers.

Keep in mind, the more bad press, the higher our insurance, and i dont appreciate friends parents seeing my car and assuming that im some sort of menace to society.

Roy, i agree 100% with you.

The place to rip it up is on the track, simple as that. You can never tell whats on the road up ahead or around that corner when its on a public street, its ridiculous! people have little or no respect for themselves and other people.

I've seen some pretty stupid driving in my time. The most astonishing displays seem to come from N/A cars trying to race Turbo'd cars.

I was driving behind an R32 GTST one day on Mona Vale Rd (Sydney) when a commodore station wagon came RIGHT up my arse and was beeping and flashing his lights. I was like WTF??? Wasn't in the mood for shit so I pulled over to let him pass and he starts harassing the skyline. By this stage I'm thinking "OMG you ****wit!!!" The Skyline driver tried not to let this bother him but after 5 minutes of constant beeping, light flashing & being cut off for no apparent reason, he'd had enough (as I'm sure all of us would) the road goes from a 60 to a 90 zone. and as soon as it came along the Skyline gunned it, leaving the commodore WEEPING. As if this wasn't enough indication that the commodore had NO CHANCE, the guy then proceeded to chase him waeving in and out of traffic to get past it, cutting EVERYONE off making them all jump on the skids, hooking up the break down lane round bends and genrally being an absolute TOOL.

I could only shake my head in disbelief and when I glanced over at the dude next to me, he look ed back and gave the wanker signal to which I laughed :D

i dont think that skyline drivers in general are bad drivers (or any other hi-po car for that matter). i know i cant afford to stack my car, so i take it easy 99% of the time.

i think the biggest cause of accidents has a lot to do with the 'showoff' factor.

people driving like dickheads to impress their mates/girlfriend/other modded car owners etc.

maybe you notice it more with skylines cause they stand out more?

I think the problem is that Skylines (along with other hipo Imports) are getting very cheap, so the deadheads can now offord them too, not saying that low income people are all deadheads - but you know what I mean.

Sadly, these deadheads usually find out the hard way that they aren't god on the road.

but seriously, the point of getting a car like a skyline is to fang the crap out of it. some people may not be bothered to wait and drive to the drags every week and think its a lot easier and just to drive stupidly on public roads. i personal think it would be alright to floor it up to about 80 on a public road if there is no one around and no cars on the road.

Yeh definately, just cause u drive a hi performance car doesnt mean u can drive properly.

I think the only way that ppl will learn is the hard way. I must admit i did dive like a crazy in the first couple of months of having my car and consequently had an accident (nothing to do with how i was driving but god wanted to teach me a leasson in the form of a 17yr old girl in a corrola who had a lic for 3 days*sigh*)

I believe the only problem is that instead of "learning" ppl are just having horror smashes and not being given the chance to tone it down on their own accord and end up in wheelchairs or worse.

Dont fool ureself, NO speeding is safe ANYWHERE. The faster u go the higher the risk, the more traffic the higher the risk etc etc.

One thing that gets me the worst is ppl that constantly brake late. Dont they know that brakes fail??? fair enuff it doesnt happen often but when it does dont u wanna have 100m of free time to pull the park brake as opposed to thinkin "im gonna threshhold brake right up to that T intersection and then fang it around" OH ****!!!!:eek:

It seems to be more of a difference between good (sensible) and bad (fn di(khead) that we're dealing with here

I think attitude plays a huge part. Guys who want to drive alongside me and stare me down, trying to be real hard men, only to gas it off into the distance... Hey if thats cool to them, great, but dont go making me part of your accident.

At the risk of sounding like a nazi, my biggest gripe is that a scene that use to be relaxed and friendly, is being ruined by space cadets who should enrol in the space program, not queue at the local RTA for a licence.

The more imports on the roads the better, but people be happy with the attention your car draws for being bolted together right, not because your pulling 2nds down the main road thru pedestrian crossings or thru underground carparks.

... and yes i know the NA, V8s boys can also drive like fools, but they are not readily perceived as being part of the same crowd as Skylines etc.

Guys, this is why we organise days at the track, cruises on interesting roads etc. No problem with driving like an idiot, just do it where you're not going to hurt anyone else.

On a serious note, some will run out of skill before others, but if someone is driving with the wrong attitutde then it's only a matter of time before they are going to have an accident. Unfortunately they may well take out innocent bystanders along the way. This is what the idiots don't understand...:uhh:

There was some twit on mIRC the other night talking about how he was doing 150 along Parramatta rd. I can't think of anywhere along there 100 would be safe, let alone 150...

i cant tell how many times some hoon/wanker/tryhard has pulled up at a red light in their common-dore/falcon,etc... with my 200sx and gave me the stare and rev their engine. morons the lot of them! i just state back give a grin and a shake of the head...let them crash and die if they want to....;) i'll keep on enjoying my driving :O

I think its getting pretty bad in some places with too many imports.. fast cars with dickhead egos trying to prove themselves.. we all did at 18.. some of us for much longer :O

But you can see where its leading. How do the cops know who actually is a reasonable driver and cautious and some dickhead?? no wonder there are so many canaries given out these days to imports.

To be honest it almost looks like a lot of the new SEVS stuff has been brought in to at least slow the flood of cheap modded cars into the country and make it harder for young guys to get hold of more modified ones. While a stock skyline is still quite quick, it only takes a few mods and its a road rocket.

Actually, to be honest, why didn't they make it age based? unless you're over 25 car has to be stock.. hmm.. not a bad idea self.. although i think i just started some abuse sessions on this topic ;)

    • 2 does "sort of" applies, maybe......but looking at what parts would be needed for the swap to get engineered, registered, and insured, and basically that's everything under the car, the modifications the make it legal would be problematic and horrendously expensive, all for a street car that just cruises around and hits a few twisty roads on the weekends Also, from looking at the NSW rules and Regs, with all modifications that is required just to make the car safe and not twist itself to pieces, and then actually get registered for street use, may still be impossible nowadays As for 1, when you add in a fresh engine, fresh transmission, rear cradle and diff, tailshaft, suspension, brakes, cooling, and all the other fabrication required, your probably looking at up to $100k to do it right, all for a 20 year old MX5 that is over engineered and you would never be able to actually use the power it has on the street, much like your beastie, which I love, but you actually track that thing and can use all of its powers in anger, in a safe environment  Hell, the old Bogan Cruise Ship had more power than I could use on the street, and in hindsight, I went a bit silly on that thing, it didn't really need the 500hp it had for what I actually used the car for, it was fun, but basically unusable on the street if you value your licence  As for cams, yeah, I'll probably book it in for them to get installed and tuned soonish, like next month after MX5 Mania are back at work....... and yes, I've already sent a email to bin the turbo quote and quote instead to install cams and a new Fluidampr balancer that will suit the 2.5 better than the OEM 2.0 balancer that is swapped over for the 2.5 install, as the balancer needs to get pulled to time the cams it's a while your in there sort of thing I did think a bit about flex fuel for a laugh, but being na, and no where really around locally anymore to get E85, I've binned that idea, so no sweet sweet corn smells are set for the car I wish E85 was more of a standard fuel, it's better for the environment, better for tuning, plus that sweet sweet smell we all love As for fitting in the family, that's not needed, as everyone in the family already owns a car that can seat 5 humans comfortably enough, the MX5 is "my toy" As for buying a car that is already built, nah, I would rather pick and choose my parts, I enjoy the process, and in the big picture, the additional cost is well worth the enjoyment, and the occasional frustration, I get out of doing it, albeit with other people spinning the spanners, and me, just paying the invoice 🤣

Also there's the option of 3), buy one pre-built that you can put your family in (it's me, it's my car)   That said, I went on a ~500km drive the other day. I didn't use anything more adventurous than 3rd/4th gear at about ~3000RPM and 50% throttle and I was going as fast as anyone has any sense doing on a public road, with enough grip to the point where I didn't want to go any faster. I was obviously under the limit of the current car etc etc. MX5 with 2.5 N/A to achieve the same speed would be more fun for any road scenario. Maybe consider cams. I wouldn't boost it. The use case is just not there and it won't actually make the car more enjoyable unless you really do plan on wringing gears from 1st to 3rd (at least) at 100% WOT on a public road to 150+kmh.

Lived in a country where you could actually do this and drive it legally on the road Sadly, neither applies to me As for the turbo, I am having second thoughts, mainly for engineering/registration legality reasons and insurance  Not saying I've finished doing stupid things that I probably should do to the MX5, but boost, and V8 engine swaps isn't on the cards Strange, but true
