Searching the threads only seems to find confusion of different opinions and theory's.

I am wanting to know from anyone who has done it, does it make any worth while difference placing say a 3 inch pipe to take air to your pod.

When I replaced standard airbox with pod, I could notice the difference - I guess wondering if it is worth the bother?

Car is r32 gtst, 3inch exhaust, Apexi FMIC, rb25 turbo.

thanks

hey mate, i just got some flexible tubing from hardware store and joined it from the front bar behind the mesh to the hole from my stock cooler return pipe so the air rushes straight into the cai box/pod...

cost about $5 so if u have a box around ur pod already then might as well do it...

i would honestly doubt there would be any confusion at all.

A decent Pod with proper CAI is the best option, always has, always will

This is a post from the Stagea section, it is relevant in that it shows what sort of temperature you get at the air filter. Note that for every 8 degrees celsius uncrease in inlet air temperature you can loose as much as 5% in horsepower. So 61 degrees minus 32 degree = 29 degrees more than ambient. That's around 17% loss of horsepower...................

Everday I had time it wasn't hot, but yesterday was a ripper 30+ degrees and I was driving around in traffic and on the freeway.

Stagea air snorkel scoop temperature test.

The Ambient Temperature (AT) sensor was placed in the air stream just behind the grill.

The Air Filter Temperature (AFT) sensor was placed on top of the air filter in the standard airbox.

The testing process was;

1. I parked the car facing the sun for 2 hours.

2. I then drove at 50 kph max without stopping for 1 minute

3. I then drove at 70 kph max without slowing/stopping much for 5 minutes

4. I stopped with cars around, at the traffic lights & checked the temps just before I drove off

5. I checked the temps again after 10 seconds of driving

6. I then drove for 10 minutes at up to 110 kph, these are the minimum temps I saw

7. I then drove around a parking lot very slowly for 1 minute and checked the temps as soon as I stopped

Test AT.... AFT

1... 33.7... 64.5

2... 32.5... 40.3

3... 31.8... 35.4

4... 32.5... 61.4

5... 32.8... 52.5

6... 31.8... 33.2

7... 32.2... 55.0

My observations on the results;

Anybody who thinks its OK to have a POD with no heat shield and no ambient air feed needs to read this.

I was measuring the temperature of the air itself, not the temperature of the things that the air goes through/around. Just because the airbox itself is hot, doesn't mean the air inside it is equally as hot.

It doesn't take very long for the air to heat up, but it takes a lot longer for it to cool down.

I am satisfied that the scoop design works as intended

Pictures

The first is the temperature sensor probe inside the airbox

The second is the ambient air temperature sensor probe, I taped it behind the grill during the tests

The third is the temp displays themselves, they are handy things to have, cost ~$35 each from Jaycar. They don't react super quickly to temperature changes, the probes are quite large, they take a little bit of time to cool down themselves. So I think the actuals results of test 5 are quite a bit better than what the gauge showed.

Hope this is of some help:cheers:

Okay Im convinced

Question is, suppose I make a CAI box for my pod filter

How big should it be and how would I feed it cold air?

The problem with some cars (like mine) is I cant use the standard box or the snorkel anymore due to aftermarket intercooler piping

Is it enough to feed the CAI box from the factory cooler hole? like wat 2BNVS and Driver has done? Maybe enlarge the hole?

I dont want to lose power because a CAI box is too restrictive

yep, like i said best to just get the flexible tubing (although i didnt use the funnel thing like driver) connect it behine the mesh so the air gets collected and travels up to where the end of the tube it conected to the original cooler pipe hole where it then travels up straight to the pod...the whole is 3" and so is the tubing...

    • They usually get made by hand as part of any such swap.
    • Was planning on getting an R35 MAF and the adapter, should this be okay? Also any idea where I could get my hands on an intake pipe?
    • I mean yes, if you're starting from scratch on an unknown engine yes you don't need to be doing all kinds of math in the background but if you're doing relatively minor changes like AFM + injectors + boost up with some aftermarket turbos it takes quite a bit of math if you want to do something like maintain OEM fuel + timing tables but compressed and then a bit more load scale up top. I think I've spent too much time working on big engineering nightmares though so I'm a big fan of trying to constrain the scope of whatever work I'm doing as much as possible and trying to get it right before moving on. For example, a local owner just did the usual E85 + single turbo conversion to his R32 GTR and nearly burned his car to the ground doing some spirited driving up the local mountains. Turbine is unshielded and too close to the hood insulation. It's tough to balance "just get the project done" and "seemingly small details can cause massive setbacks I'm not willing to deal with".
    • No idea about Neil's steering wheel, but I have the same behaviour in the Stagea. I doubt it has ever been messed with so might be normal. Indicating to turn right at a roundabout and correcting even a little bit to the left to go around will cancel the indicator. Never considered it an issue other than it being a bit odd.
    • Does anyone know if this is off centered? Looks like it, when I indicate to go right, but turn my steering wheel slightly left it cancels (was always like that even before I started messing around with it) was wondering if anyone else has the same issue?
