hi all, i have a problem with a noise coming from my clutch in my r33 gtst 95 manual. when i engage the clutch the noise goes away but when i release the clutch in neutralthere is a rattling sound , it sounds like a bearing to me, but i dont think it is the throw out bearing for the clutch bcoz if it was wouldnt it make a noise when u engage the clutch not when its disengaged?? someone told me it sounds like the front bearing in the gearbox?? could this be rite?? and if so what is a ruf estimate of what im goin to be up for $$$ wise. thanx in advance for any help given. 85URK.

thats your clutch release bearing ...

the noise indicates that it'll need replacing soonish ... depends on how bad the noise is really ...

the release bearing its fairly cheap by itself, its just you have to remove the gearbox to get at it ... if you do replace it, its worth doing the clutch at the same time just because its all in the same place, and might as well take it off once ..

how is the clutch operation otherwise ?

cheers

mine is starting to make a little bit of noise when the clutch is released, possibly the thrust bearing. i think, had this happen on a manual before ... what sort or clutch should i replace it with when the time comes, am going to be chasing roughly 220rwkw.

and how much :s

sorry, i have NO idea on prices in australia for clutches, have yet to replace one in this country ...

last clutch replaced was in the UK, the wifes GTi-R had one JUST before we bought it, previous owner had a receipt for 1000 UK pounds ... shocked .... yes ...

should be a lot cheaper for the gtst tho ... no engine out job for it !

well i went to the mechanics yesterday and found out it was the front bearing in the gearbox that was making all the noise. my options are to rebuild it or get a secondhand 1??? which is the best option, and if i was to go the secondhand option how much would one cost???

hmm

i'd be a little dubious about it being a gearbox bearing ....

if you get the noise when you are neutral, foot off clutch then is SCREAMS release bearing .. maybe thats what your mechanic calls a front bearing tho ...

personally i'd take it for a second opinion ...

oh, and buying a 2nd hand g/box will be cheaper than a rebuild i think ...

Sounds about right, given what you said.

For a rebuild, you should be looking at around $700 - $1000, but it depends on how many bearings are replaced - for that price you will only get the main bearings, not the needle rollers under the mainshaft gears, but they usually don't need replacing.

A second hand R33 box is ~ $1800 (fairly rare), you can buy a new one for ~ $2800 (one of the importers has some new boxes from Japan - the ad is in Import Performance, but they only mention their new GTR boxes).
