im not sure if this is in the right section....

hey all i was just wondering.....

can the 'police officers'(in syd) know the status of ur licence by looking at ur plates of ur car??

i mean if so what can they see about u, does it have a picture of u on their lappys that they have on board on their patrol cars? or does it have just written details???

im curious cuz my friend was pulled over and they knew who he was w/o even asking his name??

did they just assume that it was him or does it have a picture on the screen when they type in ur details??

if anyone has more info?? feeback will be greatly appreciated

:P

I dont know this for a fact but:

They can get rego details from their laptops. I dont see why they wouldnt they be able to pull up a photo of the registered driver based on that as well. This does not guarantee that that person is driving at a time though. If your name is not whom the car is registered to then there is no way they can look it up.

just to add to this, they cant see pictures of the driver, they know if your licence is suspended and they can find out every fine that you have recieved in the last 5 years, and basically any other information they need is o their compter except photos

unfortunatly some of the information posted above is incorrect.

here we go..... (talking abt NSW here)

when a 'transport' (rego check) is done via police radio any intell reports, events or warnings related to the vehicle stored on COPS (Computerised Operational Policing System) comes up straight away. this intell is basically information about any contact police have had with the car and persons linked to it or other things like sus activity and the like.

so, if the driver has been pulled over in the past, his information will be on the screen. then, its just one click away from his licence status. most of the time when you come into contact with police they enter a description into the computer about you. (hair, tattoo's etc) along with all offence details. (if u get pulled over by police, don't bother telling stories/lying you will only cause more headaches for yourself)

Next, (something you wont like) The Mark 2 MDT (Mobile Data terminals) fitted to many police vehicles show the owners licence details when a transport(rego check) is done on the car. it can also view ICOPS and RTA drivers licence photo's. (ICOPS photos are pics taken after you have been arrested  )

also wreckedhead, it is not limited to 5 years. I have seen information/charges right back to the early 90's.

something else that will be VERY handy will be trialed mid 2005. it is a vehicle mounted camera system that takes a photo of a vehicle registration plate and within SECONDS alerts if the vehicle is unregistered or the owner of the car does not have a current/valid licence. A second police vehicle up the road will receive this data and stop/pull over the car.

trials of this gear in canberra have proved that a LARGE parking lot is needed to park all the cars after they are picked up. so, expect to see these units parked on the side of major roads near you very soon.

ummm, many ways. does it really matter ?

LOL

My 2c I heard from a friend of a friend (you all know how it goes)

That they don't get the information up on their laptop, they have to radio back in to the station to seek the information and send it back to them.

A simple version of it all, but I think that's the correst principle.

nope, incorrect.

police mobile and portable units communicate (i.e get jobs, do checks etc) via VKG (police radio). not their station.

98% of the VKG operators are not actual police officers. they are classed as 'unsworn' officers.

the is no 'laptop' in the cars. it is called a MDT. some of the Mk2 mdt units are touch screen and the others have a keyboard and conventional LCD screen. the actual computer unit is located in the boot.

I believe it was like this up until about mid 2004 when they all got the computer systems fitted in the cars.

i was just wondering, and i hear a lot of things about how police work from people that is sometimes hard to believe, (not reffering to you but u know what i mean..) so i was just wondering where u know all this stuff from you sound pretty certain about it all...

Are Police scanners still viable in NSW or has everything gone digital/encripted now with the MDT datastream? I believe only the local police stations back channels stay unencripted since it itsnt info sent thru the network.

Last interesting thing I heard on my scanner was the Marrickville Station getting a unit to do a KFC run before going back to base

only a few channels have gone digital. NONE of the digital or analogue channels are encrypted and wont be for several years. (budget and coverage issues) [there are however tests underway for encryption.]

the radio system is totally seperate to the MDT(data) setup. (MDT's use telstra fleetcoms and telstra Data)

you can buy a digital scanner that will receive all the digital channels for under $800 ir $1500 for a 2nd hand Motorola XTS3000 portable (identical to the NSWP radios)

99% of police portable's do not have the DES-OFB or DES-XL encryption board installed. (OFB for digital and XL for analogue). only specialist units (SPG, OSG, drugs squad etc) are fitted with them. if you want to use encryption for a operation you need to request some additional radios. not really much point running encryption anyway as half the channels in Zone 3 on police radios are not listed in frequency guides and run digital, so 99.9% of people dont know they even exist or have the ability to listen to them)

yep, I'm SURE.

I dug up some info for you guys

here is a pic of the old MK1 unit (also the non digital Motorola spectra radio mic)

by the looks of the posts above a few seem to doupt what I am saying. so, if I can dig up a copy of a review done around 6 months ago in the NSW police news (NSWP Assoc Journal) on MDT's I will scan it in and post it up. if I can't find it, its just unlucky.

RB30-Power, in response to your post about officers looking up people that they are not supposed to. there is a section of the IT branch that is responsible for auditing the system. they can, and do rock up and ask you why you did a check on a persons details/vehicle etc. So, best practice is to jot down in your diary why you performed the inquiry. (everything is logged, they can look at your name on the computer and access everybody's registered number and time/date, method of enquiry etc. a 'registered number' is a police officers personal id number.

P.S apart from the article (if i can find it), I won't be posting any further info in the thread. Ive given plenty of info already.

    • So where is this message group so we can organise another meet? Keen to come along and catchup. Might eventually be in a skyline again next year, but the Mustang will have to do for now. Also need to get the WRX back on the road. Stupid f**king money pit that thing is.
    • Stock equivalent turbo replacement is a bit of a nightmare. The old Hitachi ceramic things were pretty good for their time, but they have primitive, vintage aerodynamics. The only thing they have going for them is a light turbine**, and there are plenty of other light turbine options these days, in both materials and CNC manufacturing methods. So, the old stocker makes absolutely no power at all compared to its physical size and its (not very low) boost threshold and response. ** and the ONLY thing that was good about the ceramic turbine was that it was light. In all other respects it is a nightmare. To get a turbo that is anywhere near equivalent in terms of power capacity (ie, to avoid it being "bigger" and needing tuning/fuelling/etc) you have to physically downsize. And that is not a "stockish" replacement. Doesn't just fit where the old one did. At least a frame size down, probably need a new dump, probably need new inlet and outlet piping made on the compressor side, new hose connections as D said above. I say, if you have to suffer that much work, you might as well do the same work to fit an even bigger (than stock) turbo, have more power (and hence have to do injectors, ECU, etc), and love life, instead of suffering with stock power levels. Or, you get a light highflow from someone like Hypergear. A highflow that has not been pushed too far from stock. There are still modification consequences here though. HG's cores are smaller than the massive Hitachi core, so it is shorter, moves the compressor housing backwards and requires mods to the air side piping. Plus new hoses. Looks stock, mostly fits where the stock one did (with the previous caveats mentioned), makes a bit more power but can be run at stock boost levels and not cause too many ECU problems. But, seriously. It's 2024. Like - 25 years since the R33 came out. It's time to put an ECU in it. I Nistuned my car (on RB20 ECU then later again on the Neo ECU) and it was the single best thing possible for minimal money. Dial out the R&R bullshit, fix up the fuelling and timing to make it more efficient for normal driving (cut fuel consumption by >10%). Nistune is not an option for you unless you change the ECU, so you might as well just do a standalone. it will be worth it. And then you can tune it up to the limits of the injectors and AFM, which is pushing 200rwkW and enjoy some actual squirt, instead of the lazy barge-like motion you get from a stock engine, turbo and management.
