R32 GTST Turbo Upgrade

Gday Everyone,

I'm lookin at a new turbo for my baby

Its an AiResearch T3 T04B rated at 450hp with the following specs:

Compressor wheel - 54 trim

Compressor housing - 60ar

Turbine side - 48ar

T3 Flange

Its apparently a straight drop in replacement for R32's (gtst). My car currently has the following:

Apexi Power FC

3" cat back exhaust

Bleed type boost controller, boost now up to 10 - 11 psi

Pod type air filter

Couple of things i hope someone can help us out with,

1 - Would this turbo really be a straight bolt on?

2 - If so, would i need any other major mods done for daily driving stuff? Ie can i drive around on moderate boost - I eventually plan to install a FMIC, electronic boost controller & new turbo back exhaust system but the budget only goes so far!

3 - Can anyone comment on the quality / reliability of these turbos?

This is totally new ground for me so if anyone has any other tips or suggestions feel free to share! Cheers! :P

I got one for mine and she nipped straight up without a single issue.

I'd keep the boost below 10psi until you get your 'cooler, otherwise you'll be generating too much heat for the stockie to disperse.

Quality? Hahaha, all I can say is hold on to something solid when you launch!

Reliability? I've had mine for 3 months now with no issues at all. It originally came from my nephew who was running it on his R33 on full boost all day, every day for about 6 months. He also took out the Newman drags title in his class using the very same turbo. I'd say that would account for something.

If you don't mind me asking' date=' how much do one of these suckers go for?

$750 plus $25 shipping from some some bloke in Cairns. It brand new so seems like a good buy to me :P

Can't wait!

    • Hi Gents, Someone I know (experienced engine builder) built an engine. It had some chinesium rods that came with ARP 2000 bolts. One failed on the dyno, destroyed the whole thing. The only possibilities are: Installation error. Possible, but we should discount it almost 100% because he knows what he's doing. He doesn't discount it that much, because he's being hard on himself. QC/QA problems with ARP products. I'd like to discount this, but I have heard a number of stories about similar failures, and stories of some builders buying 2 sets of everything, x-raying everything, and picking only those bolts that they are completely happy with. This behaviour coming from anecdotal stories of ~1% failure rates. 1% of all rod bolts failing would be about 1000x higher than I would expect to be anywhere near tolerable. If I were ARP I certainly wouldn't even be selling the product if they were dying at that rate (for non-installation error reasons). So, I would prefer to discount that possibility too. Fakes. Specifically, fakes being sold bundled with cheap rods sets from CCP factory B in Shenzen, or wherever the stuff is being made this week. So the question here is, does anyone else have some horror stories that would point to fakes being circulated in this manner?
    • I forget this is an au website, my GTR FS5R30A was 2200 AUD delivered but I did have to go to a warehouse near the port to pick it up myself.
    • Excuse for an epic road trip?  I expect a few people would be thinking of doing that given the price.
    • That's tempting to me, but I don't know how to not f**k you around, given I'm interstate.
    • I've got a R33 turbo box I don't need if you're interested. I only ran it for a couple of track days and on the dyno before going sequential. In Melbourne, $1500 if you don't stuff me around.
