driver training day (drift)oran park Sunday Feb 27th

Recommended Posts

Well I had a great time today thanks to all.

I think I won something but the prize got lost. :D

Thanks for the tips Alexi, as you saw it really helped.

Pete, no rush with those wheels. I'll let you know if I'll be needing them or sometime can be arranged.

I'll grab the camera and see if I got any good pics.

Yup definetly enjoyed myself today. First time at Oran Park and hopefully not my last. The track certainly is nothing like I expected. I'd consider EC to be more difficult but then again my laptimes are about 10sec slower than everyone else :(

I had awesome fun, thanks Pete. And all you drifting nuts - you are really nuts, good fun to watch :)

Duncan, the car is beatiful on the track - very easy to get around corners. And Scott and Ben really like it :) I ll have to get you to take me out in Oran Park or Eastern Creek for some free racing tips

No I don't think so because it always made that whistle. It's not bad or anything, I'm not trying to worry you, it's just a point of recognition because it always flies down the straight of whatever track with very little engine or exhaust noise, just a rush of air and a whistle.

Good to see you enjoying it, sorry I don't think actually met you though yesterday.

The whistle is the hidden aftermarket HKS turbo, that's why the damn thing was all over my arse most of the afternoon :)

Gotta love my 225 street rubber with 100+ laps of circuit driving, 30 drag runs and 35,000km. Yup due for a tyre change :)

I was drifting and gripping on the same tyres. :)

Do you still have the dip in power at about 5k? You weren't hard too catch around the corners but on the straight I had to redline it to get past you a couple of times there.

I wish I timed myself to compare to next time at Oran Park because I've never been there before. I quite liked it although the ditch just off the track 50m before the dog leg is pretty scary. I never gave it heaps around that corner.

I wasn't pushing it anything like the last Wakefield day simply because it's my only set of rubber on the car and their is not much margin for error on most of the corners unlike Wakefield stuck in the middle of a paddock.

Interesting track though, certainly not what I expected, very wide too.

I found using 2nd gear on the last corner gave me 10-15km/h greater top speed down the straight (170+) but I had trouble grabbing 3rd afew times going up onto the straight.

I was just reading your other thread about your drag times and I'm starting to think you do have a problem getting onto boost and maybe it happens when you change gears. Coming onto the straight because I have an auto I am in second gear and good revs so I come up to the top of the hill very quickly and was gaining about 4 or 5 car lengths probably around the time you were peaking in 2nd and hitting 3rd. Then I would hit my third which would stop me gaining but later down the straight when I'm guessing you go for 4th I shoot past you.

Your top speed on the straight is similar to mine (I have 189 rwkw by the way) which makes sense when thinking about your drag top speed.

Hope this helps a little. I feel for you as my 13.8 could really be a 13.6 but my consistancy doesn't make it seem like I have a chance.

Yes you were catching me easy coming onto the straight however that could partially have been because you had a higher corner speed giving a greater exit speed.

I was using 7psi (~190rwkw) and was changing to 4th gear right on the start/finish line. From memory if I used 3rd gear thru the last corner I was exiting at about 3,500rpm where as 2nd gear gave me about 4,500-5,000rpm but I couldn't hold it flat due to that big wall approaching quickly :)

I wasn't game enough to go into 2nd on the last corner, was too afraid of spinning out. On a good run i was hitting 90 kmh when the curb line became broken (just after the "Drive on milk sign"). What speed were you doing going into the first coner, Abo Bob? Mine was about 80, slowing down to 70ish through the apex.

Going in at about 110 but not much throttle to the apex meaning about 90 there I think. Sort of using the rise of the hill to slow me a little. Then accellarate out of the corner but couldn't put too much down due to shit tyres. Maybe 110ish just after the milk sign.

Yes Merli. next mod = cheaterer tyres. Would have had them sooner if I didn't get my wheels stolen. What I saw as completely stuffed tyres on my front rims Fatz saw as perfect for getting him home. :) Now I'm not sure what to do because the rears are still ok tread depth wise but shit quality and I'm not likely to run semis on the front and shitters on the back. Might have to borrow a couple of 17" rims to drift with from someone.

    • To be fair passengers who aren't silly and have been in proper fast cars have often been pretty impressed once you hit 4th gear
    • I suppose that's true. Barring almost any situation, I'll never sell so what the market does is kind of irrelevant to me. It's possible I'd make most of my money back. That spreadsheet I mentioned? Maybe I could make back more than what the car's total costs thus far are, but the parts and all that is possibly a different story... Thanks for reading. It was certainly a good moment and just makes the ties to the car that much stronger. It's exciting that the option will be there to bring it over, however I have some plans with a shop that may end up keeping the car there longer, not sure. Coupled with the fact I want to move there and haven't solidified any path yet. So in a way, it feels like I'm in a limbo state that is uncertain; time will tell.
    • No worries, everything worked out in the end. I just wanted to make the point that it doesn't matter where it comes from (I.E Australia), it can be broken or improperly built. I would still purchase from these companies in the future. B2R - Not certain how that finished, this was on a car I wired a few things and street tuned. I know the owner ended up shipping the motor back to Australia for investigation. Hopefully some of it is covered under warranty.  Turbosmart - I always pressure test everything that goes on my car. It's a habit from my career in oil and gas. I run two 40mm's and both had major leaks from the actuator to exhaust portion through the shaft. I returned both, they shipped me back two and one was leaking and the other had a 38mm top (40mm gate with 38mm actuator cap, no idea how that happens). Eventually after a lot of back and forth I found myself with two non-leaking gates. I believe this happens a lot more then people would like to believe but you would never know if you don't pressure test them prior to installation. Crank Motorsport - Issued a full refund and let me keep the seat rails. I turned them into scrap metal for other projects. GKTech - Shipped me out a replacement and asked that I modify it as per my idea and that they would do the same for a future revision. ATP - Can just needed a large shim to bolt up properly.  Haltech - They started an actual proper Beta channel for firmware's a few months back and stopped using the general public for testing. I'm now much happier.  Speedtek - f**k Speedtek. I would love to watch them burn.
    • I've got a Turbosmart wastegate, ATP catch can, many GK Tech parts and Haltech everything. Everything's been perfect, sorry to hear your experience wasn't the same
