Automatic Transmission Shift Kit. - Updated Oct 2006

Recommended Posts

Are these prices going to be a continual thing or just for this group buy? I'm installing a R34 RB25 and auto box into my HR31 Skyline and would be interested in getting the box beefed up slightly but it wont be ready for about a month or so.

Cheers,

Allen

I think you will be OK for the next few weeks (so long as others are taking up the group buy - cos I can see it taking a week or so turn around for each block of 4 Mike can make)

So who has rung up for this already.

I have! Sent the fax and all first thing monday

Also getting a transmission oil cooler kit

Will call them again soon just to make sure all the paperwork is done ok

after all this... Im actually still a bit blur to how a new valvebody actually improves the gearbox's durability and shift quality...

Valve body - controlls the pressure and timming for gear changes. The higher the pressure the faster the gear change.

Durability - Slower shifts mean that the bands (clutch packs) slide together much slower, thus more wear and heat, but very smooth. Fast shifts are a little less smooth but produce less wear on the bands and less heat.

Ill be calling up and ordering mine later this week, ive just moved out so thing have been pretty hectic lately

im still in though, and those to install make sure you post up a report for everyone

Excuse my ignorance but where does the valve body fit on the auto gearbox. Is it a gearbox out job?, if im correct i have taken off a couple oil pans on various transmissions and when you remove the pan, the valve body is right there? hence its a pretty easy do it your self job?

Also can someone calling mv ask what modifications he recomends to handle 280-300rwkw range? Will a tranny cooler and valve body be enough or is there a lot more to do.

So the trans cooler kit is $187?

do you know what size the cooler is?

I havent ordered mine yet, will do so next week, ended up getting food poisoning from fasta pasta on valentines day

I think it was 29x22x2 or something like that. I think there is a difference between the oil and transmision fluid coolers but don't quote me on that.

$187 is a OK price for the whole kit.

LOL at getting food poissoning for Valentines. :D What a way to finish off the day.

lol tell me about it

mod your car have some decent priced coolers aswell, http://www.modyourcar.com.au/?cPath=5_272

was thinking of upgrading and putting the trans cooler in a better spot considering i wacked a big ass intercooler infront of it last year

I just checked and its 280x220x15.

I saw those coolers on ModYourCar and I'm not sure if they are the same thing coz those are 50 mm thick.

I think the one they're selling is something like the one in the pic.

I'm not sure how good are they.

i got a B&M cooler kit from autobarn for about $140 comes with all brackets hoses clamps etc and looks alot stronger than the others like yours pictured so wont bend fins etc

model was 70264

The PIC was juust an example what I think the cooler will look not the actual thing. I'll speak to Mike and check what kind of cooler it is.

I don't know much about these so I'm not sure what to look out for. All I know so far is the dimensions and that the whole kit is included.

How big is the standard cooler? I got an R32 and it doesn't have a cooler at all, it only goes thru the radiator.

My credit card has been charged on Friday so I hope I'll receive it soon.

    • Sounds good.  I don't 100% understand what your getting at here. When you say, "I keep seeing YouTube videos where people have new paint and primer land on the old clearcoat that isn't even dulled down" do you mean this - there is a panel with factory paint, without any prep work, they paint the entire panel with primer, then colour then clear?  If that's what you mean, sure it will "stick" for a year, 2 years, maybe 3 years? Who knows. But at some stage it will flake off and when it does it's going to come off in huge chunks and look horrific.  Of course read your technical data sheet for your paint, but generally speaking, you can apply primer to a scuffed/prepped clear coat. Generally speaking, I wouldn't do this. I would scuff/prep the clear and then lay colour then clear. Adding the primer to these steps just adds cost and time. It will stick to the clear coat provided it has been appropriately scuffed/prepped first.  When you say, "but the new paint is landing on the old clearcoat" I am imagining someone not masking up the car and just letting overspray go wherever it wants. Surely this isn't what you mean?  So I'll assume the following scenario - there is a small scratch. The person manages to somehow fill the scratch and now has a perfectly flat surface. They then spray colour and clear over this small masked off section of the car. Is this what you mean? If this is the case, yes the new paint will eventually flake off in X number of years time.  The easy solution is to scuff/prep all of the paint that hasn't been masked off in the repair area then lay the paint.  So you want to prep the surface, lay primer, then lay filler, then lay primer, then colour, then clear?  Life seems so much simpler if you prep, fill, primer, colour then clear.  There are very few reasons to go to bare metal. Chasing rust is a good example of why you'd go to bare metal.  A simple dent, there is no way in hell I'm going to bare metal for that repair. I've got enough on my plate without creating extra work for myself lol.
