Yeah but since i stoped schooling in year 10, i cant get into the higher class courses ( i feel stupid for dropping out )

dude, don't feel stupid for dropping out. I dropped out at the end of year ten, haven't done any further education, and I'm in a decent paid job, been with the same company 8 years and enjoy my life :P

Don't ever regret something you've done in the past, life's waaaay too short.

Good luck with your hunt.

ps. sorry to whore your thread.

hehe thanks man, Im glad you guys are helpin me out, since im so young ive never done anything car buying and stuff before so its good to see places like this willing to help out :P

btw, i just went and bought the quokka motoring paper, found 2 silvias in there both under 5K, since its last weeks paper im guessing they are gone but at least it gave me a tiny boost of confidence that ill find what im looking for :)

Ill keep you guys posted on my situation for car hunting, thanks for all your help :)

btw heres the add i seen in the paper :

k series, 1991, turbo manual, boost controller, boost gauge, oil pressure gauge, BOV, 17 inch chrome wheelz, $5000 ono < - -

sounds good ? i know its most likely sold by now heh, and its probably one of you guys selling it lol.

anyways, what exactly is k series ?

'k series' are kings which are turbo 'q series' are queens which are non turbo

and id b really carefull if you only wanna spend around 5grand sure there are a few around that price but most of them are pieces of crap that have been thrashed or screwed around with or drifted into things :(

id spend a couple grand more and yeh expect the insurance to be higher than the price of the car so really you need to hav a bit more money

im not using a loan to buy a car.

and if you read the post above you will see i do need it, if im going to get a job i dont want to be waking up at 7:00 every morning waiting for the bus, same thing goes for study, i dont want to have my mum drive me into the city every day for tafe.

the other reason is if i get all settled i will be moving out, and i need a car before i do that so i dont have to walk to the shops for milk, commen sence stuff.

EDIT :

Mmm, i kinda know what you mean by DONT NEED, the turbo's and stuff, but like i said, i dont even need nor is it a priority. i said above i dont care if its stock, as i know stock would be cheaper.

i just want a decent car, so i dont spend say 2k on a cheapo POS, when i could have added that 2K the the rest of the money to get a car i would keep for alot longer.

For once I have to agree with Teejay..

Man you are doing things ass about. Stay home with your mum (it's always cheaper), if you don't like hard, physical work then get back to school , and forget about a higher performance car until you can afford one and the extra expenses associated with these things.

For a 5k turbo silvia dont expect it to last for too long.

It all boils down to 'you get what you pay for'.

I agree with TJ ... just buy a bunky, be happy with that for the time being, get back into education and think about the future rather than the present time.

:( to tj

Dude, your 17, go earn some money, get your ass into a real job, stop being a bum. Go back to school or go back to tafe and catch the freakin bus!

Don't loan money for your first car cos you'll probably bin it anyway doing stupid sh*t and end up on the news as another statistic and make us look bad. Don't get a turbo import, let alone an import as your first car either. You'll bitch and whine about insurance just as the other young ones do on here, get a bunky, get full comp insurance, get at least 40% no claim before you even decide to look at an import.

If you don't even have a job, how do you expect to pay for fuel/servicing/insurance/running costs? Oh, wait, You'll be able to GET a job with a car? SIF! Get a job FIRST you lazy bum, catch the bus to work like we all did.

And don't for one minute think that Youth Allowance is going to give you what you need to run a car like this. No, wait hold up, good luck moving outta home for the next 8938493 years if your only earning 20k/year and running a car like this.

Stop dreaming kid.

Sorry dude, but it's harsh reality with these cars, ask people on here how much their car has "cost" them (apart from the purchase price) I'm talking Total cost of ownership here compared to what they initially thought when they bought the car.

Get a job then think about it.

When i was 17 - i was working fulltime earning shit money had a 15 yr old import .... and lets just say my bank account never recovered .... not that i regret a thing :(

These guys may sound harsh - but most of us are speaking from experiance.

Too tru to all the above.

Stormy, most of us here had bunkies when we were your age (thinks back to dodgy vk), we still loved imports and had every single copy of HIP and the like. Get a bunky cheap car, it doesn't make you any less of a import fan just makes you sensable. I'm 25 with a 60% no claim bonus and the $1300 a year insurance still gives me the shits. We only warn of the costs because we know first hand.

Get a bunky, keep dreaming of the r32 and save money. It'll make it all that much more worth it when you finally get one.

Got to agree with the grouchy old pessimists above: I started with a $1500 rust bucket too. The plus with old heaps of shit such as this is that you can learn as you go. I had no fear about ripping bits off it, changing stuff, doing all my own servicing etc. because I figured there wasn't much I could damage on something as simple as what I was driving (LX Torana. Laugh away but I loved her...). The less it's worth, the less it costs to insure as well. Less worry about it getting pinched, scratched, run into etc, and old paint makes changing lanes easier too :kick:

Sorry to say it....but right now your priority is transportation and if you get an import it will likely be off the road more than on....I only bought an import as a second car to have some fun with and it has cost me already 10K above the purchase price. Before that I had 2 79 toyota landcruiser utes (diesels) and an 85 323 hatchback. Best idea is to get a laser or sumthing and save up all the money you'll save for the r32 in a few years.

Hehe no need to apolagize for being harsh, Im glad you guys are posting your opinions, its what i asked for.

Since most of you know what your talking about ( i hope ) i guess i might have to take your advice.

But i never said i was going to IMPORT the s13, i said i was going to at the start. But now im thinking of just searching around for one that is already here in australia, maybe from an auction or something.

What do you guys think about the non-turbo's s13's, you guys are saying it will be hard to get a turbo s13 for 5k, would i be able to get an s13 non turbo for around this price ?

but, if i do come across a k-series s13 for my price range, what should i do ? should i take a look at it ? or should i just stay away from it cause it seems sus ?

If i cant get an s13, can you guys tell me what i should try keep my eye on, i dont want a little car, im scared of them, my sister smashed into a little for laser once and it done 360's it was horrible lol.

if i can get a non-turbo s13 for my price that would be great, if i cant then i guess i will just grab something else, maybe for a little cheaper.

Thanks again for all your help and advice, i really apreciate it :P

Dude I dont think your getting the picture. Listen to the advice above, Dont worry about buying import cars without steady income first. Even a 5K S13 turbo will set you back on transfer fees, petrol (98 octane), insurance, service costs, plus who knows what else!

Just GO THE BUNKY! Put up with drooling over the import cars you see on the street. It will be soo much sweeter owning the car you want when you know you worked your ass off for it and didnt bum the cash of the folks. :headspin:

I owned a $500 corolla for about 3years before i saved up enough cash for my R33, but first day driving it home DAMN!! ---need I say more?

Ohh yeah by the way hate to tell you but an S13 silvia is a pretty small car dude, you say you dont want a little car? S13 = approx 1200- 1300kg id call that little!

Dude,

I think buying a turbo car as a first car is a HUGE mistake. I am 35, my wife and I own a '84 HR30 L20ET Skyline (with a stuffed turbo), '94 Suzuki RF600R bike and '87 Twin Cam Corolla. Three bad things about turbos: 1/. The thing with turbos is that they have to be well looked after (they are more hassle than N/A cars), if money gets tight and you miss a service, you're playing Russian Roulette with the turbo (I know, thats probably what stuffed mine). 2/. Turbo cars can be a real handful, especially in the wet. I wouldn't have got a turbo car if I hadn't had already had alternative, reliable transport (the bike), and seeing as you want a car you are going to "jump in and run done to the shops" you don't want a turbo. 3/. Most insurance companies charge like a wounded bull as soon as they see "Turbo" on a cars specifications. I hope all goes well getting back on your feet, just stay away from a turbos until you are seriously able to spend $$$ buying and maintaining it. You can get there, I met a guy the other day in his early 20's with 2004 ZX-10R road bike, 11 second quarter VL turbo and a work ute, but he is working 3 jobs and 60 - 70 hours per week to pay for them....

Cheers,

machg

Thanks guys, ok well i guess i will stay away from a turbo car then, Ive got most of my stuff sorted just recently, started gettin payed $$ again from centerlink etc..

so what about the non-turbo s13's, i asked above but i think you guys missed it, how much are these things ussualy worth ?

Just as an example, my daughters ex beau's s14 stopped working last week end and he finally got it to a nissan dealer who found the problem to be a fuel pump.

It's going to cost $400 not fitted for an after market unit.

He earns reasonably good money and he's spitting chips. Now just imagine how many horrible surprises would be waiting for the unsuspecting person who bought a cheapie import.

Do yourself a favour and get a job first, then a bunky and then set yourself some goals.

whats a bunky ? by bunky you mean a cheapo pice of crap right ?

if i cant get the s13 i want, then i will have to get a pos lol. but once again i ask, would a non-turbo s13 be ok, NOT AN IMPORT, just one that is here already and ready to buy.

    • The hot exhaust light will come on not from just the cat being blocked, but it's just a temp sensor, and it's designed to warn you to not do things like park in long grass.   If you've been pushing the motor a bit, it can cause the light to come on.   Second if the cat is rattling, I'd suspect it's not blocked, but instead falling apart inside.   The easiest "fix" until you can get a cat put back in, is to unbolt your one, bash the rest of the insides out, and then bolt it back in.   For a daily driver/street car, I am in agreeance of put a cat in the car. If it were race car I wouldn't care if it were removed.
    • No worries at all 🫡 I think the most satisfying things to make are the little bits that are just impossible to find or they're no longer manufactured. Generally I always try to replace parts with OEM wherever possible. This little project is also great because it'll never see the light of day, but strengthen these brackets so it's not just relying on the little standard screws in the headlight plastic. As soon as I saw the standard brackets and screws I thought, "well I'm not going to install with just the screws, the plastic tabs will just snap off". It's crazy how expensive everything has become yeah. But I suppose that's supply and demand; granted it's a lot easier to get brand new genuine parts these days which is fantastic 😊, I don't have to get totally reamed at the local Nissan dealer ha ha We sure are lucky we have all these manufacturers making parts these days, a few really great Australian companies too like Platinum Racing Products and Fit Mint Automotive, what a time to be alive ❤️ . I've got my eye on the RB26 head by PRP as mine has a very fine hairline crack, so that'll need to be addressed some time in the future. If you have any requests or odd things to make feel free to let me know and I can have a crack at making replacement parts ✌️
