Hey guys, i copped a canary for a few things

Wanted to find out if its bullshit or not

No.1 back spoiler brake light inoperative

No.2 back licence plate light - only one works

No.3 - i have silver plates on the pedals and not enough rubber so

if its wet i could slip

No.4 - i have an air pod filter & front mount intercooler

Copper says u can either have one or the other

Is that true why?? and if so how do i get away with having both??

Appreciate the replies and if u have been pulled up by cops

Also the BOV - they said on the canary " not to vent externally "

Something about u have to have it plumb back or something.

yes, all are defectable: Breakdown.

1) all cars complied must have a highmount stoplight whether its on the spoiler or in the back window. Canary!

2)The lights are there for a reason, ADR states both must work otherwise it wouldn't have two lights to begin with. Canary!

3)what they said is true in the eyes of the law.

4)You need permits for the air filter and intercooler. Get em at the pits or regency of whatever you call it.

BOVs are illegal cause they are too noisy (some) and most are externally vented where the air comes out instead of being recirculated ala the factory valve. This confuses the computer, it over fuels and emissions are raised. So get a plumback like factory or replace the stockerm for the pit inspection.

you basically need permits for anything you don't wanna get picked on for. they're required when changing from the factory specs. Its just beauracratic shit.

Your licensing centres or pits should be able to issue you a Dept of planning and infrastructure mod permit for most things. A BOV is not one of em due to the emissions stuff I said before. just take it off, get your canary off then put it back on.....

yea so now thats how u get a POD setup aswell as a FMIC... thought it was just one or the other... i seriously dont see as to why if u have both, its illegal, when u can have one or the other...

btw if u have a partition and POD inside... and a FMIC, is that legal?

or a partition for the air intake at all is it legal?

where can i get all this ADR shit so i know i just came down from queensland and we get away with blue murder...

if until u do something stupid and they see u do it... which 99% of the gold coast area are dumb enuff to do, and still think their king shit for doing it... *thumbs up to them the tossers* *sarcasm*

and ps... not all of em are bad... i know quite a few that enjoy their privilages having a license, me included....

In Vic the rule is one intake mod only....POD or FMIC, but not both UNLESS the car came stock with an FMIC (eg GTR) in which case you can have a pod as well, but the FMIC must be stock standard.

Enclosing the pod doesn't matter, the above still applies.

Also there's no permit you can get that will change this. It seems that you can get a permit in other states.

in vic, it's basically an aftermarket cooler/pod (so a sidemount cooler that is larger than standard is also illegal if used with a pod)

As already said, u can't get a permit in Vic, just use the stock airbox and put a good filter element in it.

all of those things are legit defects, probably a little harsh, as they are fairly minor items, but nonetheless still defectable. And if the cop wanted to be a prick, he would have made u tow the car home. Look on the bright side, they are all easy to fix. Welcome to Victoria - the police state!

Can't say I've heard of the one intake mod thing. Sounds like a lot of bureaucratic BS too me. Can't you guys get a car engineered in VIC?? My understanding is that:

1) Pods need to be engineered due to increased induction noise. A simple drive by sound test by an engineer is all that is needed to clear this.

2) FMICs need to be engineered, mainly because it is a "modification", hence a certificate is required for it, but also because it also supposedly raises emissions from a vehicle :bs!: While an engineer can give you a certificate for this modification, I've been told that for it to be air tight (i.e you can't be defected), it must also be accompanied by an emissions test on your car.

In NSW (I don't know whether this is different in other states), both a pod and a front mount intercooler, or for that fact any modification, can be done to your car as long as it is engineered etc etc.

The easy way out, of course, would be to return to stock. :)

you probaly haven't heard of it, because you don't live in victoria :-p

If you install any FMIC(or technically any mod), it has to be ADR approved, and to prove that is meets ADR's you will need an engineering certificate.

This is a separate issue, the EPA has it's own regs. it gets a little confusing because there are several parties involved. Your best bet is to contact the EPA and find out what you need to get done. What they will most likely tell you, is that you can't have an aftermarket pod and cooler, regardless of whether or not both those items have engineers certs

So assuming that the car with the current mods is actually road worthy

Im thinking maybe it was a dodgy rwc that came with the car i bought

Another thing is i dont have a stock air filter and 2 i need to get a plumb back bov

Anywhere i can get the normal stock bov for the r33 gtst?

I dont think gtst's have stock BOV's. If your after a plumb back BOV you should be able to find a cheap Turbosmart one at your nearest autobarn. Does anyone know what a PBBOV sounds like? Someone once said it goes SSHHHFFFWUMP!

Pods are not a roadworthy issue, so the RW guy wouldn't give them a second look. I spoke with a Vicroads engineer (NOT a desk drone) about pods and he said Vicroads arn't interested in them because "....they are not an engineering isue". However he went on to say that the EPA would definately be interested and to check with them.

I have a stock BOV somewhere if you want to borrow it. If your piping is non-standard tho you might have trouble fitting it (it's a plumb-back type).

you could just block off where the bov goes. this is what i did, i just got a square piece of metal, drilled holes in it in the right spots, and then bolted it on. Block off the vacuum line and you'll be sweet.

It won't do any damage running no bov, just drive it easy. Some people say you can do damage to the turbo without a bov, but that's yet to be proven, and S13's for example don't have a stock bov.

alot of roadworthy places may be unaware that those things constitute a defect, as alot of mechanics wont be too familiar with imports, and can be some confusion over what is stock or not.

My mechanic didn't pick up on a few things on my car - pedals, steering wheel (not padded & smaller than legal), air filter (oiled pod), drift handbrake button, gear shift didn't have shift pattern printed on it(yes, this is defectable), height adjustable suspension (can't have suspension that can lower car to illegal height, also suspension travel wasnt within 1/3), braided brake lines, rear tyre had a chip out of side wall

most of those things are fairly minor items, but just goes to show that they do miss things, it's only human!

cars early 1989 (i think march or april) and before didn't need a high mount brake light, and besides, the light could have been good when u bought it, and the globe blew later.

if you suspect you received a dodgy roadworthy, have the car checked out by your mechanic. Alot of the suspension & steering components such as rubber boots & bushes are not repaired if the roadworthy is dodgy, those are long-term wear items that should have been picked up if there is anything wrong.

If you call up Vicroads they can give you advise on how to handle the matter. The tester can loose his license for doing a dodgy RWC, and usually what happens is they will have to fix all the problems free of charge. Otherwise, it gets taken further and they risk loosing their license.

Hey, Yeah well my dad manages a repco store and will be calling the guys up who did the rwc for when i bought the car so ill wait until what they say

If this is true then yes they will get into alot of trouble and obviously rw my car free of charge

But the strange thing i dont have a water bottle for my wind screen wipers which u must have which the cops didnt pick up when pulling me over

It was remove i assume as when they put the fmi there wasnt enough room as the pipe that runs into the fmi has no room for the bottle to sit.

But in regards to the bov, ive been told to take it off, put a bracket of some sort to cut it off until i get a plumb back.

Currently i have a blitz bov so im not sure if i have standard piping or not as these mods already came with the car when i bought it.

I've been in the situation when a car i bought had a dodgy rwc. You're better off getting a roadworthy report done by your mechanic, before jumping to conclusions.

Better to be armed with that before you accuse the mechanic who did the original roadworthy, and you might miss things, and he wont fix everything.

Wouldn't the engineer need to take into consideration the EPA?? It seems silly to me that a car can meet the ADRs and still be a worry for getting defected by the EPA. Surely if you prove to the EPA that a pod and an intercooler do not increase emissions (and that they are roadworthy) that they would have no reason to take any action.
