Hi everyone!

Just need some help from all the tech heads out there.

I have recently had my RB26 block sonic tested and I have been informed that the walls of the block are too thin. They recommend me purchase another standard block. However I have a RB30 block and I am interested in using this instead.

I heard it’s a bit of a headache trying to put the RB26 head / RB30 block set up into a R32 GTR. Is this true? Can someone explain the necessary modifications involved in this set up.

Thanks.

the rb26head is a straight bolt on to the rb30 bottom end all you have to do is put another timing tensioner on the rb30 bottom end. if you didnt want to do it yourself sub-zero have done 100s of them(55717077)

ok...the problem is the RB30 block is not wide enough for the RB26 sump...therefore you need to make an adapter plate up....But the diff will then be a little lower also the sump to gearbox bolts dont line up and the driveshaft from the transfer case has a diffrent angle running to the front diff so the recess that is cast into the bell housing may be an issue

Your best bet it to get your rb26 block fully sleeved around $700 to get back to std bore size (ready to bolt new pistons in) and the sleeve material is twice as strong as the block material for the same wall thinkness . Not hard to do and is good for 1000hp plus if dont properly (os giken 3 litre is sleeved rb26 block with a large spacer basically)

my mates run a sleeved block in his r32 gtr now and i did alot of engines like this when i was in the industry :D

Agreed, better than the RB30 route! that is what I'd do if in your situation.

Hi everyone!

Thanks for all your replies.

I took pnblights advice and I spoke to the engine builder about it. He said for me to re-sleeve it will cost about $130 a bore, so for 6 be $780. For that sort of price I might as well look for another standard block.

Now this is what I can’t understand. Previously my block was bored out to fit 87.5mm pistons and I have access to 88mm pistons. He said if he bored to fit these pistons the wall will be too thin. But on many occasions I have seen HKS 88mm pistons on various GTR’s. One such example is Deans (Ultimate Performance Imports) R33 GTR. So why is my block an exception? I realize that all blocks are different but can this be done?

the only other thing i would take into consideration is even if you get another block you will still have to bore and hone it so the cost will be more than just another block and you might be any better off

sleeved block $780 as your quote

(this block will have good strength and can be rebored down the road etc)

new block $1200-1500(i'm guessing) plus boring and honing $~400

you will be looking at twice the cost at a guess and the block will not be as strong

just my opinion

cheers

YEA pnblight, you talked some sense into me. Ill call my engine builder tomorrow. I hope his workmanship at sleeving is good.

Thanks for your advice

    • Um. No. Since Matt introduced the TIM it has become a lot easier to deal with the consequences of changing K for AFM and injector swaps. Then, tuning is a f**king doddle. No-one needs to know or care how many grams of air are flowing or any other bullshit. Need more fuel in a cell? Add more fuel. Need more timing in a cell. Add more timing. Need to adjust any of the other tables for warm up and so on? No harder than anything else. Sure - it's not an ECU system for starting from scratch on an arbitrary engine. But then.....it was never supposed to be, not recommended for, and almost never used that way. So.... On your engine, in particular, Nistune/Nissan OEM is about as sophisticated and difficult as banging 2 rocks together. Those ECUs are primitive and simple. There is nothing difficult there. I learnt Nistune from scratch, created new maps with extended axes, interpolated/extrapolated the original maps onto them and tuned my RB20 (basically the same ECU as your 26 ECU) all by myself, more than 20 years ago. And that was long before even TIM.
    • Set of knee pads for a R34. Will fit every model I think. Comes with everything except the rubber covers for the bolt holes. Still in great condition. You will need to drill holes to mount these or use double sided tape. I can do free shipping and will be shipping from the Netherlands with tracking.
    • Nistune needs something like an entire excel spreadsheet in which you build an abstraction layer that converts everything from real units you can actually measure into all of the various tables. The number of unexpected dependencies hiding in how the Nissan ECUs do math is a pretty impressive optimization trick for 8-bit MCUs but good god is it awful to actually work with in practice.
