Ummmm... I'd rather not live in a totalitarian and junta-based society, but if that's what turns you on, Mother Russia is awaiting your visa application.

This is what I mean by it's hard to come up with a solution. Everyone is throwing around solutions that simply wont work. Full stop. Setting laws isn't as easy as it seems.

Perhaps the easiest was to slow this behaviour is jail time. Nice and simple.

Merli, if you had of read just one sentence further you would have read the following....

"Not that this is the ideal solution but a balance between that and what we have would go a LONG WAY to changing the mindset of those who wanna chance it !!!!"

What I mean by this is that when I was growing up in the 80's both in the AUS and the USA, cops used to give you incentive to not break the law. And that was before you got to the station or court house. Not for stupid little things but for the more serious infringements.

Now days with all the "Do-gooders" and their handy cams one person can get sued for sneezing on anotherwhile a murderer get's off with a warning and then sues the family of the person he killed AND WINS. And that's the way our wonderfull, modern legal system works.

Those caught street racing should be taken away, with their car, dumped at a legal drag strip, $50 taken off them, and MADE TO ****ING ENJOY IT!

If they don't do 5 runs legally, their car is removed and auctioned off on the spot..

They might realise it's just as fun as doing it where they shouldn't.

Who had a glance at todays telegraph today-

This will giv u all da sh**its

This article was headed something like 150km/h my road battles.

And in the artcle:- this guy decides 2 give da paper a personal insight on drags-

We have jus spoken 2 mark ( not his real name) blah blah blah he owns a Nissan Skyline GTR and it all goes downhill 4 us afta that

Merli, if you had of read just one sentence further you would have read the following....

I know, I did read it, but it didn't support my post, so I conveniently censored it

I know, I did read it, but it didn't support my post, so I conveniently censored it

And that's not the first time, either :(:D:D

Seriously though, these confiscation laws aren't working, and it is obvuous that these activities are undertaken for the thrill of it, for the ego-inflation, and for the street-cred that they think it gives them amongst others. It's all in the attitude, and that is what needs to be changed, perhaps the govt can add to their token campaign against street racing and actually promote the off-street drags. What happened to that WRX that was supposed to be doing this? I haven't seen it at WSID in a while. Like someone suggested earlier, why not have weekend off-street meets (Friday nights?) aimed at those who like to race on the street? Maybe even have the govt subsidise these nights so that they are more ($$)appealing to the street racer.

It is obvious what is going to happen though - the police will put on a blitz for the next few weeks and then all will be back to how it was. Street racing will continue.

As for keeping the money from confiscated cars, they cannot do this legally.

I genuinely believed that third time offensive driving offenders could have their car made property of the crown and sold at auction with zero proceeds going back to them.

The person driving the datsun 1600 on Sunday night was a friend of mine . He not only collected people he didn't know but also atleast one member of his family who was standing on the side of the road . To be honest the future at the moment isn't looking to bright for him and there is atleast one spectator hanging on to his life by a thread in hospital .

I think most people on here have particapated in atleast one street race in there life even if it be just by accident . I certainly know that I have done this before but have never gone out specifically looking for it as I would rather do my racing at WSID and get a timeslip to prove how fast the car is .

There is no excuse for my friends actions or what he and the other ppl present were participating in on sunday night but the thing is it was a freak accident . I've had people like my own father and other people who I have dealings with who are in a higher age bracket then myself say that he was a total idoit . But after recalling stories they have told me in the past about what they got up to in there younger days there comment's start to sound abit hypocritical .

MerliDude, if we implemented an open speed limit rule here, people would be killing themselves and other drivers left, right and centre. Our licencing system is so pathetic compared to Germany. They can afford to have autobahns because their drivers are well trained and use the speed with a modicum of responsibly (with the odd exception of course).

We wouldn't be able to handle an autobahn. We don't have the driver training for it.

I could not believe the licensing system here compared to the UK when my g/f went for her test. Not only that but the lack of training needed to get through it.

Those who say it isnt the movies like 2F 2F are the ones who can distinguish and dont do it, its the ones who can't are the problem.

Personally I think it is too much power too young. There are exceptions to every rule and by and large this website is a prime example with very few crashes amongst members and stupid acts reported. Unfortunately this website forms a small minority of the car loving community.

Better driver training, tougher testing, lower power cars (I mean 50bhp low, not 125KW per tonne) are a start.

As others have said, our parents did things that were similar but it seems to be becoming almost a fashion now sadly.

Wow,very sad..It will only lead to the demise of another privledge in the future.

Our parants tell us of how they used to be rebels etc.get away with everything, dont u think that it contradicts everything they tried to teach us while growing up.If i had a simoleon for every time i was told as a teenager about how not to do things.id be a rich son of a bitch.

Real Australians think this shouldn't be a police state, remember Ned Kelly, a real Aussie hero. Our rights as citizens need to be fought for. No police gangster is going to take my right to drive my car.

I regard this skyline targeting as racist. The police shouldn't target a skyline driver - includes staring at them all the time and waiting for a slip up just because they own and drive a skyline. It is legal to own a skyline remember!

Its all political, a very small number of people who are responsible for import laws are directing government pandering to the idea that domestic performance market should be kept for local cars at higher prices. If this isn't true then I challenge someone to tell the public. The fact is that foreign cars are cheaper, better quality and safer. Without government imposed barriers to owning foreign cars, the local car makers are going to lose sales and even collapse. Is that such a bad thing you ask? Well we'd lose some export income.

Why don't they just make Aussie cars more competitive???

Apparently they are now. I'm even starting to like the look of a V8 Commodore, with all the mods. However, its the cost of Aussie cars that is the rip off.

The poorer average person that buys a car will find the foreign import a very attractive option. More features, more safety, and less cost in dollars.

The richer person that buys a car will find that he can afford a newest Aussie sports car; but still get more performance and more active and passive safety features for dollar from an import that was made years ago.

Its a no brainer. Australia isn't competitive in the second hand market. It will take 10 years before the newer Aussie cars start to come into their own as second hand value for money.

Leave it to market forces. This is a capitalist country after all. I'm sick of the car market being manipulated by picking on citizens.

end of serious stuff.

now on to a seperate topic - the street racing.

The fact is that if Commodores were as good as foreign cars for the money then there would be people racing them and killing themselves just the same.

Young people have no fear of death or of fines or of losing their licence or of going to jail.

And older people will just develop technology to keep police out of the way.

---

And a light hearted warning to policy makers...

If this public harrassment continues and Australia becomes dominated by tyrannical gov't, and we lose our right to freedom of association, freedom to choose in a capitalist market, we aren't going to go lying down, no communism and police state for me!

Do you know how many people in Australia drive cars? A lot.

Don't let the politicians call us sheep!

Keep picking on car drivers and we'll start seeing red.

There is and always will be late night illegal street racing! And if they stop that something worse will come along.

Any loss of licence threat is useless. It'll probably mean more unlicenced drivers, driving even cheaper bombs and for sure even more deaths when they see a cop and run for it, rather than face a $10,000 fine that will take the next 5 years of their life to pay off. It picks on the lower classes who need cheaper transport like foreign cars.

If this continues with law abiding citicens who love their cars being treated like criminals. You'll just turn those people into criminals who will think, what the heck I'm a criminal now, so I'd better join a street gang to protect myself against cops.

Hey R33 i saw your post - that Russia idea is looking like it could happen. NOT.

We might even start public disobedience 101 classes and get everyone to vandalise the speed cameras and puncture cop cars tyres and go a free for all day every day. Those speeding fines and money making gov't policies abusing the public are just wrong!

I like 2rismo's signiture. Street racing isn't drag racing. :D

I get the feeling current laws aren't working because cops don't want to go through all the legal mumbo jumbo for nothing. Lawyers come up with minor techincal issues and their client gets off free of reduced charge. How would you feel if you busted someone for nothing?

A cousin of mine got done for street racing a while back now and he's just to get his license back. What I find astonishing is he can't wait to line his car up with some other guys. Frankly, I hope he gets busted and gets his car sold off. Maybe goal time with Big Bubba will teach him something. It's scary to think that many other people out there have the same mentality as he does, not learning from their mistakes. Or even still, do they think that illegal street racing isn't a mistake in the first place? What it comes down to, it's an attitude thing. Young people get the impression that street racing is hip and the thing to do. It's become part of the youth culture.

I agree that the current license system is a joke. Reverse park, change lanes, navigate around-a-bouts (don't clip the curb!), stop at the stop sign/traffic light, and hey presto! P plates are yours.

If the current trend of street racing continues, imagine if the politicians raised the age of getting your license from 16 to... say... 21? All it takes is a few dumb c*nts on the street and in gov't to make this possible.

Merli your a CHAMPION!!

I think that idea IS the best way around. The problem needs to be targeted BEFORE it hits the streets. That will work out better for all!

In same places its down right obvious that police take advantage of the laws. Whats not to stop them abusing this when they pull u over for speeding?

Lets say they could give u a 10k fine, take your car away, etc, etc.

Now lets say for arguments sake i was speeding down a road minding my own bbusiness and a cop gets me on a radar. Whats stopping him from saying that i was street racing after he pulled me over? Get what im saying? Innocent people will get punished for owning a nice car?

It needs to be fixed before the streets! The young couple that died last december. Where they in an R34 GTR? What are all these young people doing driving these kind of cars? Ok some might have the skill but others just have the money!

Driver training programs and tougher licence tests are a must!

Merli email that to ALL the newspapers! :(

Oh and i totally agree with this also!!!

I think 2rismo's sig should be made into an official SAU sticker to show the mainstream attitude of forum members.

Also i dunno how the streets are in Sydney but in Melbourne they are HORRIBLE! In some places the roads should be closed!

A friend of mine hit a ditch in his spanking new BA ute buckling the rim and almost sending him into a fnce. He went straight home grabbed a camera and took a foto of the hole. Lucky he did cos the next day he drove past and they were fixing it!!!

He sent it to the right place and they paid for damages and admitted liability. Now i think VICRoads should be fined also but do u think they did?

What it comes down to is even if u think ur the best driver and have the safest car, u still have to think about other factors like surrounding road conditions and other things too. U may get hurt too not just other people.

So think twice, its not that much only $50 to race your car down here in Melb. $50 is a small price for the EXTRA amount of safety u are recieving when running your car at a proper venue!!

Plus u get a timeslip, proving how fast your car really is!!

Were you there, Lepperfish?

.

No I wasnt there, Why would a SAU member be at some illegal runs?

I dont believe it was a freak accident.. :Bang:

I mean whats so freakish about a retarded P plater speeding down a dark street

at midnight colliding with parked cars and hitting innocent by standers?

:ufo:

Hear, Hear!!

Where are the safe driver training programs?

You need to get trained in advanced vehicle control and safe driving both before getting your licence. Take a look at the Canadian system of getting your licence. Let me tell you when those youngsters get their licence at 14yo they treat it very very seriously when they have to do 3 months of safety driver training, it becomes their mantra. Teach them young, and teach real high level skill to control that vehicle when its out of control - take the mystery out of driving out of control and put the exitement into a safety program and those young drivers will see it for what it really is, a way to get yourself or others injured or killed.
