Public Carparks are PUBLIC by nature of definition?

Motor Vehicle accidents that occur either in PUBLIC carparks or on PUBLIC roads are covered under compulsory Motor Vehicle registration/insurance ?

It will happen! And if the official event has to be cancelled then that will make an even better news story! How the NCA killed off a charity event, due to red tape bullsh*t!

Five cars happen to meet up by chance, kid gets run over, it becomes an insurance issue for the personal injury insurance of the person who ran the kid over.

Organise an event with 200 cars, and a kid gets run over, it becomes an issue of negligence for the organiser if the kid being run over was a forseeable incident. Eg. was the area closed off, did you have security, people directing traffic etc. etc? The more you do, the more liability you hold. You can't close off a public carpark, so you are creating a higher risk situation - so you get liability insurance to cover your ass.

Don't blame the ACT Govt, blame the Australian legal system and the precedents covering negligence. And remember Todd Wilkes crash at Eastern Creek, and how the event organisers got charged with manslaughter by the police.

Well said mjfawke. It really sucks but its the legal system to blame, getting more like the states every day.

This has already cost me a fair bit to setup so Im not going to give up yet. I am reviewing the documentation on starting up an association at the moment. If I am able to get a Canberra Motorsport Enthusiasts Association or similar started I will do it, then I apply for public liability insurance.

Why not just make it an official SAU NSW event? They should already have club insurance coverage, and if not, it would be easy to organise.

I have approached SAU NSW to become an official event but this may not be suitable, especially on such short notice. Will see what they can come up with but it is short notice. It would give SAU great visibility being the main sponsor of such a big cruise but there are also insurance and internal approval to consider. Whatever the case, SAU have been the driving force being the cruise and as usual its community has got right behind it.

My reason for suggesting SAU NSW is that incorporating an association (club) in the ACT is NOT a simple task. You need at least five people, a constitution, and it has to be registered with the ACT Govt. And then you would have to organise insurance...

I agree, in fact I have all the paperwork including the "Associations Information Kit" in front of me. That would be my preferred option (SAU) otherwise I may well be going down the other path in creating a new incorporated association.

I can't beleive some shiny butted pencil neck driving his crappy Dihatsu Mira (cause they get good economy) has decided with 5 working days to go, time to try and crash the party.

We are not going to be racing, hooning or even dragging, just crusing like I do any other day.

No way anyone tells me when and where I can drive my car, I pay rego and insurance for a reason.

Anyone smell the incident involving the datto having influence on this??

OK, I am checking out PLI this morning from a company that does one off events.

If that fails it looks as though I will be going down the path of registering a local association with the purpose of running more events like this in the future (this time with PLI). I have posted up a link for those that might be interested.

SAU may be able to help but the issue is timeframe. It takes approx 6-8 weeks to get such an event pushed through CAMS for approval.

If anyone knows of a business willing to pay $1300 for public liability insurance for the event and will become the main sponsor (and saviour) PM me ASAP.

Have the media been contacted, and informed of the new situation. ppl like fm 104.7 will have been on the band wagon about this event for the last week, let them know that this has happend and they will more then likely help, its worth a try Glenn

guys, it is important to realise that this is not about our government. if you want to blame someone, blame the morons around the world (and in australia) who have thrown personal responsibility out the window and sue at the drop of a hat. the insurance firms are paying out so many of these claims that otherwise fairly harmless events such as this pay the price of high premia.

Glenn's doing a great job so far and no one can blame him for worrying. The problem is that accidents happen. E.g. yesterday at the shops, a guy near us left his handbrake off while he ducked into the shops. Car rolled forward and dented the one parked about four metres away. Under the right circumstances that scene could have turned into a real sh*tfight - not for the person whose car was dented, but the person who left the handbrake off, suing the car company for allowing him to park in that manner.

On a related note, I agree with Andrew - i want my $10 to go to the tsunami victims and rebuilding their lives. Not the pockets of an insurance firm and their claret over lunch.

Glenn, keep it up - there are people not far from here whose lives will really benefit from this.

That is for a CAMS event, under the CAMS insurance. SAU should also hold public liability insurance for the non-CAMS events.

But is it not a public place, there for our own insurance and regos third party take care of that shit. I agree Glenn has done great job and is in no way his fault.

Michael, if they dont have PLI for non-CAMS related events Jayce has kindly offered to pay the $600 that it costs to get it for this event. Its up to SAU, but they shouldnt be pressured into something like this. They already provide a good service to us all.

Would be great for publicity though, I would make it known that SAU NSW are the event organisers. Whatever happens we will try everything to get this back on track.

I agree the radio stations may be the way to go.. Perhaps one of the local clubs (Vikings for example) - I would expect as not for profit organisations these clubs would be looking to sponsor things in the community throughout the year?
