Hi all,

I'm planning to import either r33 or r34 but I'm not too sure with the compliance thingy. Need lots of help regarding them...

1) How do we drive the car to the compliance shop when it aint even registered? Or do we ask the worker from compliance shop to go to the port when it arrived?

2) Do each RAWs workshops only compliance specific type of cars? I checked on the internet and some just do compliance R33 and not mentioning anything bout r34? Im still deciding which car to import in (might go for supra as its cheaper) so do they compliance supra as well?

3) How much is the cost for the compliance? does it vary with each cars? Coz i saw it to be less than $2000 somewhere and almost $5000 elsewhere.

4) My friend said that some cars might takes up a year to get it inspected? i was wondering, aint i suppose to just get it registered wif queensland transport after getting it complianced?

5) lastly, which workshops in brisbane provides compliance to almost all cars, good quality as well as being cheap..

1. get temporary permit to drive solely for the purpose of getting to the compliance place.

2. Different RAWS are "qualified" to do specific cars, check with them first.

3. ~$1000-5000, sevs.. aka step by step costs :(

4. 1yr, bad luck. best case: few weeks shipping, then few days compliance then on the road.

1) According to the rules, the car is not supposed to touch any australian roads till compliance is FINISHED. ie regardless of if you have a permit or not you can't drive it. Its supposed to be trucked to the compliance workshop from the port. But then not everyone interprets the law correctly. Some workshops have trade plates (basically the same as permit but there's no time of day restriction).

2) I assume you've been to the RAWS website that tells you which RAWS does compliance on which cars. Some workshops only have the plates to do R33's and not R34s. See each workshop has to obtain data that allows them to compliance a car, they also have to demonstrate they have the knowledge to convert a car to ADR standards. When they do that they are given 100 compliance plates for that specific model of car. So to answer your question... some RAWS may be able to comply various cars, they aren't specialised at a specific car usually, it all depends on what market share they want.

3) The cost is at the discrescion of the compliancer. Usually the costs are adjusted according to availability of compliance plates, demand, and initial cost incurred to recieve the plates (also how much profit the compliancer wants to make and the costs incurred for materials and labour during compliance obviously). Average price for R33 skylines is about $3500 give or take $500. Supras and R34s are more. Most compliance you would have found for under $2000 are probably for 15 year old and older cars where the ADRs to be met aren't as srtict and compliance plates aren't necessary (so there's no initial costs for the workshop... hell they don't even have to be a workshop).

4) Once compliance is completed, the workshop should be able to organise an Engineer to come and inspect and sign off the work. If this takes more than around 1 month, then the compliancer's not trying hard enough.

5) Quality is pretty much guranteed if you go to any RAWS as the govt is pretty strict about conditions the car has to meet and the workmanship needed. best bet is to search at:

For skylines we usually send our clients to Carmen Imports (talk to Craig Walker) they know their Skylines pretty well. As for Supras I can't remember but it was a shop on the GC, I can get details for you when I get into work on Monday.

    • yeah first and reverse is where you will find clutch release issues (whether hydraulic or mechanical) because the difference in revs required is the highest there; particularly changing down from 2nd to 1st when still moving. To be clearer though, it is possible that the clutch release bearing is the wrong height. This is less likely than a hydraulic issue but it is not unheard of when you are mixing and matching

    • Hi all, Restoring r33 series 1 rb25det. All the heater hoses were on their way out, have replaced them and put it all back together. After testing I noticed a small leak from behind the head on the actual metal water line to the turbo when cars warm. I tried running a longer hose over it but it kept leaking...   I am about to take the (stock) manifold off again😔 to change the water line does any one have any lines they recommend? I was looking at Aeroflow Turbo Oil & Water Line Set but not sure what everyone else recommends. Car is completely stock but want to upgrade turbo eventually. it looks like ill have to disconnect a lot just to replace these lines so if there's anything else recommended to do please let me know. Thank you in advance!
    • From memory, on the R33 GTSt at least, while everyone says "It's not adjustable", I found when I changed clutches in mine, it just needed a small adjustment on the rod length. But be very wary here, as you could end up trying to push the pushrod in the master too far, or blowing out the slave.   Most likely though, if the master/slave isn't bypassing internally or leaking out, then the throw out is the wrong height compared to the fingers on the clutch, so when it moves to disengage the clutch, it isn't 100% disengaged. You can check part of this out too by jacking the car up, having the engine running, put your foot on the clutch and try to engage 1st gear. If it goes in pretty easy (Compared to the ground) and/or the wheels start turning a fair bit and it takes a bit too much brake pedal to bring them back to a stop, this is likely the issue.  I'm not sure if you can adjust the height of the forks etc in these though, it's been that long since I've touched any RB gearbox.
    • That's all good, I thought I was missing some interesting feature! Maybe @PranK can double check if that is something that is meant to be operating or not.
