Hi All,

Does anyone have pictures of what an R134a compliant refill point looks like? Trying to work out if my car needs conversion

Finally, does anyone have recommendations for places to get the conversion done? So far I am being quoted $250-330, but most places don't have a listing for Skyline's so I think they are just guessing.

Cheers,

Lucien.

Can see the service fittings for the A/C?. If so (you should be able to - these are the fittings with the valve inside - usually have a coloured cap over them (green or blue or red or something))

If the thread is on the inside it's R134a

If the thread is on the outside it's R12

The conversion will generally cost around $300 including dryer and seals but this may differ from place to place. $250 is a good price but make sure they are a reputable business as they may not replace any o rings. This is necessary as the R134a is a higher pressure and the R12 seals will not be able to handle it very well. Thus you will get leaks.

hope this helps

This may sound really stupid, but I don't know exactly what I am looking for (ie. where do I look ).

Someone I know was recently quoted only ~$130 for a conversion on their BMW including new seals/gaskets, hence why I am suprised to be being quoted over double

LW.

ok, it should be located right next to your turbo dump pipe. Where the A/C lines come out it should have a blue cap. Unscrew the cap and look at the fitting. See above for stats.

As for price. Dunno why it is so expensive. I have had a few conversions done for me for customers and cars like Hilux's and camry's and stuff like that are only around the $90 trade and $120 retail. I'm not sure what is different as I'm not an aircon specialist but me next post will explain.

ok further research tells me that there is no apparent reason for it costing so much other than the 3 hours to do the job, all new fittings, all new o rings, new dryer and the gas fill. Gas fill by itself is around $120 retail so I guess the rest just adds onto that.

They have told me that is a general price for all common cars. It's not because it's a skyline.

    • Went looking at mine, reading off the tyre, presumably these are 1st week of 2003. Still hold air (I haven't had to pump them up in over 12 months!)     I couldn't quickly find the date on the front tyres, they were fitted around 2008 to the rims, so probably not quite as old, but they have a lot more dry rot cracks in them. Still hold air.
    • I am now intrigued to go check the dates on the tyres on my Skyline... We need a game of who has the oldest tyre still holding a car up, and successfully holding air (for longer than a 2 weeks I feel is successful air holding).   I feel your tyres may be beating mine
    • Ok, still waiting for a date to get the cams installed on the MX5, why so long, because MX5 Mania has received a few new sets of different cams with different specs for the MZR and are currently trialling them, and working out what is best for 2.5 "powers" with stock internals, in the end if I go bigger than the Kelford stage 1 cams I'll need to look at the valve springs  Hopefully I'll get the news on them next week As for the boot of the car getting fixed, I hopefully pick it up early next week, I was sweating on picking it up yesterday but, meh, it was not to be, so ne weekend cruising for me
    • Ok got some old tyres for you guys...my car has been sitting around un-driven for about 6 years now. I had it on the original rims with the shitty compliance tyres it got it with back in 2006, which were manufactured in 2004... Sidewalls eventually rotted and split open, obviously no air in them and the rims were holding the car up. Just swapped them with some 17" Work rims and tyres which are probably 10+ years old too but at least holding air
