noticed some people scamming others lately round the for sale section.

just in case this hasnt been though of, on NissanSilvia.com they have a rule where you need to make a specific amount of post before you can post in the forsale section.

maybe something similar should be done on here also, maybe would deter some scammers from posting.

:cheers::D:(

just a thought

Not a bad idea... Would stop people signing up and putting stuff up for sale out of know where.

I think that is a very good idea..

At least must be registered for 1 month to be able to sell any items. Stops the idiot opportunist.. save the mods work, saves many problems.

The only problem with a "xx posts" is that it just encourages idiot one line posts, and things like that - which becomes irritating. Should just be one month registered. That should fix a large number of the problems.

It would also stop the mines_datsuns/dori_doris of this world coming back and trying to continue their somewhat dubious trading practices each time they are banned. Won't eliminate it totally, just make it frustrating for them.

Also would save the "post once, don't come back here for 3-4 weeks and answer any questions or respond to any PM" problem.

They'll just register 10 accounts now and use them in turn, as each account gets banned.

It has to be based on both time and number of posts.

Personally I think 3 months is a good minimum time, as seen on Overclockers Australia....... and maybe 100 posts.

NS also have a 'sponsors' for sale section, and i would say 99% of them are genuine people, more often than not, bussiness'. And they are quite frequent sellers, so it's quite easy to track down a few people and get opinions etc.

Could be worth looking into.

The For sale section is the only reason i go to NS....

They'll just register 10 accounts now and use them in turn, as each account gets banned.

All you'd have to do is check the signup IP address.. and if it was the same for a number of accounts simply block or ban that IP.

Makes it difficult, as they'd have do to it over a number of days, etc. You can also ban "free" email addresses for signup, such as hotmail, etc. Then they'd have to obtain 20 different alternative email addresses to create 20 different accounts. Again, that makes it quite painful.

Most of the time it's just lazy shits anyhow or people trying to do a quick spam and never come back here anyhow. In a month's time they would have forgotten about it. Won't stop the serial offenders, no, but it will piss them off and make life difficult for them to do it, which is what it's about.

All you'd have to do is check the signup IP address.. and if it was the same for a number of accounts simply block or ban that IP.

that will block dial up users that dont deserve to be blocked.....well atleast i think it will...AFAIK that's only gonna be good if they are static IPs that used to annoy me back when i was an IRC geek. People would ban like 211.27.*.* and end up banning an entire ISP..

All you'd have to do is check the signup IP address.. and if it was the same for a number of accounts simply block or ban that IP.

what about 56k users who dial into a hub?

they are all bound to have the same IP at some point so you cant ban by IP as you could impact a few (if not a lot) of users.

As merli said, it's easy to get around no matter what you do.

It would go away for 3months, and then be back in a big way.

People just need to be very careful. Get a lot of details and check the bad traders lists often as we update it when we come across people

Where possible try top buy from your same state so u can go get it. If not ask a well respected member in your state if they mind getting it for you.

There are many ways to safegaurd things

Only OS you have problems then, but nengun/greenline and other established places have been respected for years

Nothing is fool proof, but I think Predators suggestion of a legitimate Email address is one of the better ideas.

At least then you have some base of reference to go back to real person in the event that things go all pearshaped.

well the idea was brought up as a full proof plan, just a deterant for some.

some people are going to be bothered signing up and having to wait 1 month to post something up for sale.

if a minimum number of posts was enforced and someone wanted to sell something they might be forced to spam which would result in a bad reputation and no body would buy from them anyway.

i suppose this would be better than nothing????

the time + post count thing could work, along with the trader system., plus people could have a look at "posts from this user" and you might be able to get some idea if they were legit or not.. if they were really keen then theyll build up a whole fake profile and still do it.. but at least its more difficult and may catch out the stupid lazy ones or deter a fair few :) id hope anyways :)

does anyone know how "validated" thing work on the LS1 forums ? is that all approved by hand ?

a combination of this stuff would definatly deter a fair percent of dodgey scammers and at least introduce some form of screening

To be validated on the LS1 forums you have to be verified by two people who are already validated and who have met you in the flesh.

something needs to be done and soon, the forums are getting discredited and the "for sale" section is turning into a joke..

Seems like you've just given up or it's in the 'too hard' basket mods.. that's nice..

How? It hasn't on other forums which have more schemes in place. The reason most people do it, is because they are after a quick buck and want to flog something quickly. They do a quick search, find the forums, then post away 5 mins later.. not in 3 months time once they wait until their account is active.

These are not the sort of people that develop elaborate schemes and making this and that up.. or conconct elaborate user accounts 'just in case' they want to sell something dodgy. They're not thinking "oh in 3 months I'll try and flog this stolen turbo I have to get rid of in the next couple of weeks" so I'll signup now... they come here, get something that makes it more difficult, and piss off elsewhere. As nexus says, a valid email from an ISP is also just another way to track back to the originating party.

They try flogging their shit on the boards that have these poor verification standards or lazy attitudes that "oh well we can't do anything, why bother".

Nothing is fullproof, but neither is being passive about the whole issue.

...report the user's details to the ISP, time/date and range found on. By law they have to investigate the problem and possibly remove or block the account if a fraud allegation is made. Even if you get 50 users bitching how they can't access the website because their IP range is banned, and you tell them "we aren't unbanning it until action is taken on this particular user" - then they're going to be bitching and whinging to the ISP then aren't they until something *is* done. I know that's a bit extreme but pft..

Yeah, why is that friggin tool still on our forums!?! :)

Look, lets not attack each other over this.... We all want the same thing, but everyone has their own ideas about how's best to go around it. If we resort to dramatizing this, nothing will get done.

I think at the end of the day, ANY of the above counter-measures suggested are great ideas, and will help curb the dodgy scammers from using SAU to defraud our members.

I think we should start with implementing a 2 month restriction from posting in the For Sale forums, and see how that goes.

RE: users...

the mod team are aware of everything. Rest assured guys. There are just other things that need to be sorted sometimes with users.

Just give a bit of faith. We do see all. and members are great in reporting problems too us.

If anyone does have a problem.

Then im happy to be PM'd, as any other mod is
