If anyone wants some nice trick alloy bonnet pins that sit flush or 1mm above the bonnet line then let me know. Saw some neat ones at the Motorsport show the other day, skyline_geoff bought some at the Trade Store, im getting mine next week for my new bonnet

I don't need any at this time, but I might in the near future :)

Can you get a business card or details of the distributor when you go get yours please?

Pics would be good too :)

Yhe i have the business card at home. They are actually in NSW, if Geoff sees this he may post some pics. The bottom half that gopes into you radiator support mount is the same as usual, but rather then a pin thru the boonet, you have an aluminium housing the size of a gum leaf that has a push type latch/door.

When you push the latch, it releases the pin and allows you to open the bonnet. To close you clip it back down and its all spring loaded. So sits all neat and flush on the bonnet. Could even be colour coded i guess. They are attached to the bonnet by approx 6 allean head cap screws.

They are advertised in Autosport Engineering and are trick units. Ill check, but im 99% sure they are FIA etc approved so a re well engineered and perfectly safe. When i get back to Melb from Adelaide ill post the details up in the Motorsport section of the forum

what does compression have to do with pinging?

The higher the compression you run, the lower the detonation threshold. i.e. The less boost you can run before you'll start running into detonation problems.

I have never heard ANY tuner who knows his conrod from his clutch say that they can't run more than 13.5psi boost with a stock engine because the compression is too high.

I ran 1.2 bar (17.5psi) on my old GTS-t (I didn't want to run more because it was my daily driver and I didn't want to push the engine too much) and it made 280rwkw. The new owner ran it upto 1.5 bar (21.5 psi) also on the stock engine, and stock compression.

13.5psi = too much? Sounds like tuner limitation, not compression limitation to me

when it hit around 15psi i can hear it ping, thats got really nothing to do with the tuner, i wanted it to be very safe cause i used to use it as a day to day car but now its purely for racing and the od cruize. i got more mods to do soon so we will see.

Oops, Speed.

I guess neither of them would like me confusing the two. Its too late and i had way to much C++...

They don't mind. Both Speed and Wheels are owned by the same publisher. If you confused any of those with Hot4's, or FastFours there would be hell to pay :D lol

    • Absolutely this. Yes, except not vacuum hose. Something oil/fuel safe is a better idea.
    • Like a Stagea, but not as cool! Hope you have enough garage space for this, or is something going to leave to make way for it?
    • The new project has arrived. I have wanted one of these for such a long time, well before that meathead Clarkson drove one in Africa. I really wanted an E34 but I have some medical issues that mean I *really* can't bump my head and the lack of airbags in the E34 made it just too big of a risk.  I don't know why I've always liked these older touring BMW's to be honest, but man I love this car. She's been pretty well maintained for her 243k's with what appears to be only a single oil leak at the oil filter housing gasket. It has a bunch of updates including later model bumper and headlights, 7 series billion-way adjustable seats and it came with a few spares and another set of wheels with legal tyres. I got a unregistered car permit from the RTA and drove it back from Canberra on Saturday.                   First cab off the rank is cleaning it up for blue slip. I dont know how picky they'll be but I figured I'd clean the headlights, fix the oil filter housing gasket, replace the speed sensors (throwing errors) and swap the OE wheels (the M Sport wheels have a big chunk out of one of the tyres.) I also need to replace all 6 gas struts - 2 for bonnet, 2 for hatch and 2 for hatch glass. The car tries to eat me whenever i open any of these. My plan for this car; Ultimately, this is a budget car. I can't afford to throw lots at it and its because I have another car that I got this, if something breaks its no big deal. I will just maintain and repair it really. But eventually I want to do a manual conversion. It actually looks pretty straight forward for E39's and the trickiest part will be sourcing the parts.  I do need to replace some suspension arms or bushes because wow, she's a floaty old girl. She's also fantastically slow. Like really, really slow. When pulling back out on to the freeway on Sat after a quick pull over I needed to wait until no cars were visible before going.  Oh, and the guy I bought it from had a gorgeous R31 GTS-X in the garage.
    • Do you have a picture? I assume it is a breather for gearbox oil as it expands, it should have a vacuum line run nice and high in the engine bay (R32 GTR has it on a top bellhousing bolt)
    • Hi all, I am putting an r33 gtst gearbox into a VL and have noticed what looks like a vacuum barb on the box (on top in the middle). Suspecting that it's a vacuum line but I'd like to double check, if someone could confirm the function of that would be great. Cheers in advance.
