Look at the engine number on the block is the easiest way.

Look at the crossover pipe they have slightly different plumbing.

The RB20 doesn't have the VCT solonoid sticking out at the front.

The plenum is different, the rb20 runner 5 & 6 are different to the RB25, this is to clear the r32 brake booster.

Thats a few ways of telling off the top of my head.

what is different on the engine number? does each series of engine carry the same first digits or sumifn?

what is a vct solonoid? (sory for the dumb question :))

The other give away is the position of the badge on top of the motor and what that badge says. One is quite long and does not state a capicity (rb20) the other says 2500 (rb25)...

The position of the BOV. The r32 bov sits flat and the rb25 sits on its side.

The lump in the timing belt case indicates 25 motor and rb20's are normally labled so.
