hey all

I have used the search button and have learnt a little bit but not enough!

I have seen external wastgates range in price from the one im currently looking at for $180 by someone called Stone racing its a 38mm upto $2000 for some kick ass gate.

My car is a basicly standard r33 '95 with hks exhaust, filter, duel stage boost control, and BOV.

NOW some questions

1. Can they be fitted to a standard turbo

2. are they noisey, i hear some make noise and some dont (i heard a skyline the other day that made some sort of spooling up sound then a click as he changed gears i was guessing it was an external wastegate?? sounded ***#ing awesome!

3. any power gains??

4. easy to fit?

Please no laughing at my questions as im just trying to learn as all of you did once before and still are im sure

Cheers guys

:)

we'll ill take a shot and answer for you

1. no it can't, the standard turbo is internal wastegated

2. you're probably referring to a screamer pipe assoicated with an external gate setup, search around for some info on the screamer pipe, basically the wastegate vents to atmosphere and you can hear it

3. no, external wastegate are used to control pressure on larger turbos as the intergate much is not as efficient at doing the same task due to housing and pressure levels.

4. unsure but it needs to be bolted onto the engine or manifold somewhere, i think there are aftermarket manifolds (like hks apexi etc) that have bolt mounts for the ext gate

these are some common internal gate turbos:

hks2530

hks2535

hks2540

hks gt-rs

apexi ax53

trust td05

trust td06 (some i think)

garrett gt25

garrett gt28

some of the common external wastegate turbos:

apexi rx6

hks 3037/3040

garrett gt30

trust td06

you can also get combo's of say the gt30 with internal gate but it could be doubted the "effectiveness" of the wastegate given the housing size and pressure levels. if you want some good turbo advice and are thinking external gate then probably best to your tuner or even gcg turbos in sydney, should be able to give you ample advice on pros vs cons for int gate vs ext gate
