taking the MR2 through dickson pits this week, just wanted to ask a few questions

my car doesn't have the tyre placard, do i have to find one off another MR2 or...

also my spare tyre doesn't have the 80kmph limit on it...

any help?

oh, and whats the rule regarding high mount break lights?

i'm REALLY stressing about this, as rego ends 3 of march...thursday

You'll probably need a tyre placard. Someone I know printed one out on a sticker you use for mail or similar and stuck it on (you need to get a scan or something of an original one)

Your spare would have an 80kmp/h sticker on it if it's been engineered. Has this car been registered before?

High mount brake lights are required on post 86 cars (from memory) if you don't have one, you can buy one from clints/the warehouse and stick it on your rear window. Wire it into your exisiting brakes (not too hard at all).

A japanese tyre placard is not acceptable at Dickson. I got absolutely reamed for this. I got one off an aus delivered GTR (brand new from Nissan) and they still failed it saying it was JDM model and needed the appropriate placard from either the original compliancer (who is now out of business - was complianced back in 1999) or from an engineer. So in the end I had to get the wheels engineered (the engineer also gives you the spare tyre max speed sticker, although dickson didnt check mine).

Have you got the engineering certificate? It might have the appropriate modifications in place, but it -needs- to be engineered or Dickson wont even look at the car.

I think you might be able to avoid going to dickson.

if the car is more than 10 years old, you dont have to take it to dickson. i don't know why, but thats what happened with me. my car is a 93', and was registered in NSW. i just took it down to my friend who does rego checks and he passed it on the spot. changed over to ACT rego no problem. same with my last car too.

you should be able to just take it to anywhere that does inspections and it shouldn't be a problem.

or maybe i'm just lucky.......

i needed the right placard and the 80kmh markings.

from memory, we used a permanent marker to write 80 kmh on both the rim and the tyre on both sides (nice and neat like).

correct tyre placard i had to get from the compliancer (ugh).

the more stories i hear the more i think i had it easy despite getting annoyed with them. when i was their the only things they checked were my lights low and high beams. break lights., reverse light, they checked my engine bay numbers had a quick look underneath and did the hand brake test. they didnt evne look at the place car on the 80km thing.

this is all strange....I got my car from nsw and it's an 89 model, all I did was get rego inspection from tez then went to a government shopfront and it was done. I do have the engineers certificate though so maybe that's all you need :confused:

i agree. same happened to me with a newer car! i'd try and avoid dickson if you can. its worth a shot anyway.

My bad, I completely missed the part where its already registered.

If its already rego'd you can do as mentioned above (roadworthy and shopfront) if its not rego'd or only on temp rego, it will need to go over dickson.

Yeah dude you dont need to go to dickson and nobody else will notice any of that!

HOWEVER!!! I went and had my rego done at a workshop and then realised I needed to go to dickson for a VID check (as the car was coming in from NSW) When I went in for the VID check they Defected me...

Try to avoid that! Do the VID check first, if you need one... I think you do.

    • Update: I got the magnet out. I bought 3 different flexible magnetic reach tools, but none of them worked. The magnet on the tip was all less than 2lbs of force, so i had to buy a special cylindrical magnet that had a pull force of 9lbs.  The magnet finally came in the mail yesterday, so i got under the car to get to work. The super strong magnet isn't that long, so i only have about 1 finger pinch lengths to hold it. I was so scared when i was going in the hole, that the 9lb magnet would just fly away inside the oil pan never to be seen again, but i had my butt cheeks clenched and finger gripped on that thing so tight, i managed to get it to suck the other magnet out.  It was a victory for me last night.         
    • Yep, pretty much what you said is a good summary. The aftermarket thing just attached to the rim, then has two lines out to valve stems, one to inner wheel, one to outer wheel. Some of the systems even start to air up as you head towards highway speed. IE, you're in the logging tracks, then as speeds increase it knows you're on tarmac and airs up so the driver doesn't even have to remember. I bet the ones that need driver intervention to air up end up seeing a lot more tyre wear from "forest pressures" in use on the highway!
    • Yes, but you need to do these type certifications for tuning parts. That is the absurd part here. Meaning tuning parts are very costly (generally speaking) as well as the technical test documentation for say a turbo swap with more power. It just makes modifying everything crazy expensive and complicated. That bracket has been lost in translation many years ago I assume, it was not there.
    • Hahaha, yeah.... not what you'd call a tamper-proof design.... but yes, with the truck setup, the lines are always connected, but typically they sit just inside the plane of the rear metal mudguards, so if you clear the guards you clear the lines as well. Not rogue 4WD tracks with tree branches and bushes everywhere, ready to hook-up an air hose. You can do it externally like a mod, but dedicated setups air-pressurize the undriven hubs, and on driven axles you can do the same thing, or pressurize the axles (lots of designs out there for this idea)... https://www.trtaustralia.com.au/traction-air-cti-system/  for example.... ..the trouble I've got here... wrt the bimmer ad... is the last bit...they don't want to show it spinning, do they.... give all the illusion that things are moving...but no...and what the hell tyre profile is that?...25??? ...far kernel, rims would be dead inside 10klms on most roads around here.... 😃
    • You're just describing how type certification works. Personally I would be shocked to discover that catalytic converter is not in the stock mounting position. Is there a bracket on the transfer case holding the catalytic converter and front pipe together? If so, it should be in stock position.
