If a Japanese car arrives in Australia with a tuned aftermarket ECU (for example HKS F-CONV Pro), can the car still be driven around using our 98 fuel (with additional octane boost added) and given the occasional squirt without major problems?

Depends on the tune, but I'll say yes. Importantly before giving it a boot listen for knocking first as you wind her up!

If you can get the F-Con V Pro re-tuned do it by a shop. Else if you have the experience and confidence buy a navigator and tune it yourself at or with a shop.

I called a local tuning shop here in Perth in regards to tuning the HKS Fconv Pro, they mentioned that they have a guy come out from Japan twice/three times a year to tune the Fconv Pro ecu's, he also mentioned that if my Fcon version is older 3 years I will not be able to get it tuned as HKS update the software for use with only newer models? :)

This example happened to me yesterday. It sort of answers your question

I have a 33 GTST using a Power Fc and base map tune.

On optimax fuel or BP ulitmate it gets a max knock reading of approx 45

Yesterday was out of town, running low on fuel, I put in some "premium" fuel from a matilda sevro only $15 to get home

First time I got up the car, knock went 125!

First thing this morning filled up at shell on Optimax, knock stays below 45
