actually.. what am I thinking.. I have a free gearbox for you squizz!

an rb20 auto box! yours for absolutely free..

but get in quick, these things sell like hotcakes..

Actually here is one.. see what i mean: http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...ead.php?t=66175

Here's one I prepared earlier

I think that's ferni's old gb, and if so I've got those actual bits (or what's left of them) in my garage

squizz: it's good that your not interested in getting new parts....because you can't anyway. Original design 3/4 gears and associated components for R32 GTR's are NLA from Nissan

Hmmm,......let's work though the common causes.....

Torque, not enough to cause this sort of failure

RPM, not enough to cause this sort of failure

Traction, not enough to cause this sort of failure

Clutch, not usually associated with 3rd gear failures (that's a first gear, drive shaft and diff problem)

Lubrication, I assume it had good oil in it and it was carrying the right amount

Driver abuse, previous occurances may have caused it to chip or crack a tooth, this occasion was just the last straw

Damaged components following previous repairs. Did you have the gears checked prior to assembly? New bearings?

Faulty assembly, how was the end float? Gear mesh? Input and output shaft alignment? Cleanliness prior to final assembly? All the usual gearbox suspects.

I have yet to see one break for no reason, they handle way more power, rpm and traction than this. So whatever the cause, it has to be eliminated on the next build. Get any used components crack tested and ensure all the tolerances are within specification. That's about the best I can suggest.

Hmmmm. Well every clutch swap (there has been four in the last 12 months) I get new fluids for the box and they have never pulled anything nasty and broken out of it as yet.

So as far as I know this is a 97000klm old unopened box with regular fluid changes.

Next weak is car repayment weak so sometime after that the box will be swapped (I hope if I haven't been devorced) and I'll have the other box taken down to see what's actually left inside it...

I think it was just too weak for my awesomeness and undeniable majesty...

As Bob said I've done two boxes now, the first was to be expected (churping all 4 wheels in 3rd at redline), the second however was a bit unexpected, again changing into 3rd but this time the input shaft let go. This second box was a series 3 R33 GTR box with the strengthened synchro's also. BTW my GTR only has around 320 or so rwhp, so it's not putting out massive power.

I just got the latest box from Sydney for $1200 2nd hand (freighted) to give you an idea on $$$'s.

Good luck with it all...

Cheers Cam

    • I don’t really have any ideas how to set the timing on the CAS 😂, sounds like the top, sounds like it maybe misfiring as well as ticking,  got the box sorted 😌, must of been a air bubble on the clutch side
    • Use a 2' length of hose (that's 2 foot, not 2 inches) as a stethoscope to localise the source of the ticking. From cam covers? From exhaust or turbo manifold gasket? From injectors? From lower down in the engine? Etc. Use a timing light to set the timing. Put Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the box. It's not the very best thing for the box, but it will take a box that refuses to engage a gear with other oil, and make it engage a gear. I had to put it in when I installed the R33 box I have in my car. It would not select ANY gear when running. Smurf jizz made it work. That was >10 years ago and I still use it. I'm stuck with it now. Failing that - rebuild the box.
    • Well done Duncan. The fuel tank bulkhead lid is also in great condition (some of mine were stuffed). These are now out of production and good ones like that are becoming hard to come by.
    • Wow that's a steal, you've done well there.
