Hey fellas

I saw in a recent post about RB26 Cams in an RB20. I would like to do this, but i have seen that with the stock ECU the idle is pretty messy. If i had a powerfc and got it tuned properly would the car idle better?

Also does anyone have a rough idea of how much increase i would get from this mod?

Finally anyone know the cost of RB26 Cams?

Thanks heaps!

Basicly the workshop doing my tuning has a spare set of 26 cams laying around, so they are gonna fit them up and see what they can do. Should be very interesting. But im prepared to buy tomei cams and adjustable cam gears if needs be later on down the track.

yeah i had a look on nengun.com at cams. then saw someone here put rb26 cams in an RB25 and also an RB20 and they said idle was a little rough so i thought if you had an aftermarket ecu it would make the car idle easier as you could change heaps of stuf etc etc.

It was tried on my car with re-written ecu and Pfc. The results werent that great, ie hopeless.

You can get RB20 cams for around $850, i suggest you get the real deal, or at least get the RB26 cams machined to suit the hydrualics. Thats based on my experience, others seem to have had more luck, but i know of two first hand instances where it was a waste of time, and in my case a waste of money.

Waz, with all due respect, ill bet money you were either sold RB25DE/RB20DET/De cams or something. Or the mechanic that installed your cams still has the RB26 cams sitting in the back of his workshop.

Not meaning to doubt you, but sometimes people you trust lead you astray. I am willing to be proven wrong, and not that you have to prove anything, but i would love to hear from someone that knows for a fact that the cams they have in their hot little hands are RB26 DETT cams, and were isntalled by them , or the installation was witnessed.

It sounds old school tuff, but it just didnt work:(

i don't know what to say to that other than

- my mechanic would not stock any other parts

- i saw the old cams that came out of the engine before they went into the bin (they acutually snapped one getting it out)

- mechanic is a friend of the family

cams were purchased from GT51R who has (had) a well documented white R33 GTR Vspec so i have no reason to doubt the origins of the cams

yes, i actually have no ws of proving if they were specifically rb26 cams as there was no 'rb26' printed on them etc. but my mechanic said that they had a higher lift of about .5mm

next time you are in brisbane you are more than welcome to come and check them out if that is possible (as long as whatever you take off you replace) and you buy me a slab as compensation :P

Waz.

Roy, meaning to doubt you but I would place a bet on the fact that your RB26 cams were not installed correctly, and the workshop handling your car had no f'ing idea and jerked you around. Quite possibly they have parts of yours lying around their workshop.

/bitch off

LOL...yeh the installation was definitely the problem with my car. The journal that i stole off Bl4ck32 had a different tolerance to mine. So after running for a while it started to gal, and the inlet cam borderline seized resulting in the timing belt to skip teeth. So i think i can attribute the damage aspect to the tool with the wrences (me) and the different sized journal. When the cams were removed the damage was most evident on that journal I7.

So my thing idled like a piece of sh1t, but i never drove it out the driveway. The cams were cleaned up and tried in a friends R33, and same deal, woudlnt idle too well. He went for a drive and the car was an absolute dog under 4,500rpm then it took off.

Admittedly the PFC wasnt tuned for it, but this particular R33 makes boost like a truck and has a turbo with similar performance to a 2530. So my experiences combined with his, using the exact same R33 GTR cams means that im a little gun shy now of the whole thing.

And personally, i would get them machined to suit the hydraulic lifters before installing them.

Now run off and find some more wicked sh1t to put on my car..just so i can spend the next 18 months farking around/up ...:P

Brisbane? Since when did you move from cold and dreary Melbourne.

Based on mine and a friends experiences...well, happy to hear more from ppl that got the whole thing workign properly

moved up in jan to study medicine :)

the weather is so good its not funny...

OK didn't read the whole thread but for $280 incl. I can re-grind your GTR cams to hydraulic spec. This is a Nissan grind and it acutally makes the profile larger because there is no more clearance. Do not get overly excited about the increased size because it isn't a huge amount over the GTR cams but it does make them hydraulic and it WILL work in every instance. The area under the lift-duration plot (at the valve) is an increase of 5% over the GTR profile but this is all in lift. So this means you get the same duration at 0.050" but an extra 0.5mm lift at the valve. The base circle will be approximately 0.5mm smaller in diameter which the hydraulic buckets will take up.

I don't want to start a sh1t fight, just offering a solution.

Sorry I didn't organise this earlier Roy...

    • How much have you lowered?  I had 350Z springs in the rear and was able to pull the camber into factory spec with the factory arms on the rear, obviously the front ran negative camber as it isn't adjustable, but rotating the wheels regularly evened out the wear.
    • Either the installer needs to come back, you need an auto electrician, or you need to learn automotive electricals yourself.   First step Id look at is where that big thing came out of, is there still things unplugged at that location? Maybe they just forgot to put a relay in or something?
    • Well, this is probably where a wiring diagram and a multimeter come into play.
    • I can say to anyone thats doing this; having done a number of R clusters; just be careful if its an unknown cluster.  It takes a bit of force to pull up; but if it feels excessive then its probably stuck. I've had this and pulled the entire hair spring out; and I can tell you; its not easy getting the correct spring replacement with the correct inner diameter and winding. In my case someone had used some sort of adhesive to stick it to the spindle and it pulled the whole spindle out; which the force seperated the hairspring from the spindal and caused it to deform.  You may have to clean it (IPA); or in my case if i'd known i should have used some sort of solvent on it.  Also check out Cruizin Central on eBay. He does all sorts of dials; and you can email him with any custom designs you want. So if you want like certain logos etc...he'll send you a mock of what it will look like then you accept the order and he'll take care of the rest. Fantastic dials and he can do basically any design you want.
    • Have you confirmed its the actual axles? Also the wheel bearings that mount on the hubs to hold the axles wear out. I replaced mine as they got play in them. It sorted my play issue.
