Hey,

Im lookin into buying a N/A skyline for my first car. What can i say... im i realist and im probably gonna crash into somthing. Id luv a turbo but insurance is just stupidly high. So i rang up just cars for insurance on a N/A. They quoted 2.5k a year for 94 stocker than stock R33 GTS. I am guessing i do live in a high risk area with fountian gate being theft and minor car accident central. But i was always under the impression that N/A was much less insurance wise. I am 18 btw with rating 4. Just wondering wat some of you other N/A guys are payin for insurance.

thx :)

lol howd u get a rating of 4 so fast? how many years have u had full comprehensive cover for? to get that rating? im paying 2K full comprehensive its cheap becoz my dads an insurance broker and he cut a deal for me and ive never had insurance before so its pretty damn cheap

but dude 2.5K still fairly expensive u can get it cheaper from other companies

I actually rang up aami first as my folks are insured with them. As soon as i said skyline they directed me to just cars... but because my folks are with aami which owns just cars (i think) i get to start my insurance with rating 4 (well 1 better then usual anyways) with either aami or Just cars. Ive never had insurance before. Is your insurance for a N/A or a turbo and are you past the 24 yr old hurdle?

Hmm...

It really isnt fair for all you N/A fellas out there. I would think it should be much easier to get reasonable insurance compared to a turbo but it seems to most insurance company's it dont matter particurly if its turbo or not. I mean if u were goin to pay 2.5k insurance for a n/a wouldn't you rather get the turbo for an extra 500 a yr. Still doesnt put me off the line though :). im sure ill get a better deal when i get round searchin. for now i think ill just turn a blind eye and keep on savin for the car + insurance :)

649 for 3rd pary isnt bad.. but i just know im gonna crash

im not over 25, and i own a gts and gtst both wit full comprehensive, but as i said dads an insurance broker with broking business, got me a good deal, thats a good deal aami got going then, starting wit a rating of 4 nice as ice mate :) yeah so my insurance for the gtst is actually under my dads name so its only like 1600 or so , if ur gonna get a nice car, dont get third party wat if sum jealous fu-k scratches ur car bad, hows third party gonna help, the guy whos 16, i dont even reccommend going near a skyline till ur on ur greens, a non turbo still pretty powerful lol jkz

Checked my insurance papers today, and its infact $699 3rd party, and $849 for fire and theft..

$1399 excess....

And i get if the car is written off and im not at fault i get $3000 back..

Bonus is im allowed unlimited mod's as long as they're legal!

Which isnt to bad.

And yes, the insurance company really didn't care if it was turbo or non turbo... the fact that i was 16 is what they cared about.

i'm with just cars... but i'm female, rating 1 and 25 so my insurance (come august) will be under $1k

location matters:

(1) when i was looking to buy mine, spoke to a girl who was selling her's and she was 27 and rating 1 - but she was paying $2k

(2) when i was looking to move, got a quote to see how much it would change if i switched subburbs, and it went up by like $600

i agree DaGr81, full comp is the only way. You cant expect to be a decent driver when you firsy start. Practice makes perfect. We may like to think we are real safe but in reality where the most dangerous ppls on the road and chances are were gonna crash eventually so comp is a must. 1600 for full comp is damn good for a gtst. When you ring up for a quote can you just blatently say, "hi i want to insure my car i drive everyday under my fathers name so i pay less", or do you have to diguise it a lil' ?

or u can just get ur dad to do it? hahaha man its not just about how carefully we drive, its about wat jealous fu-ks can and will do to our pride n joy, how cut will u be wen sum fag scratches ur car and uve only got third party? or how cut will u be wen u crash into sum1 and ur insurance only pays to fix the other persons car and urs has to stay in the garage until u can scrape together the money to get it running again, and being young people we are, we cant exactly afford for that to happen unless ofcourse our parents are loaded in which case u shud be driving a gtr and have full comprehensive at 7800 dollars for sum1 my age :)

im more scared of sum1 scratching my car

but yeah

when my r32 was non turbo i was 18 and rating 5 was paying about 350 third party. Now it has the series 2 rb25det in it im 19, and rating 4 and my insurance didnt rise at all, only my excess, although the insurance company did say that when i get the new policy in july (i changed halfway through my years payment) to expect that it may go up $10 or $20.

when i hit 20 though and rating 3 planning to go full comp just for peace of mind. only reason im not going full comp now is that just car insurance dont have pay by the month up here in qld.

whats this stuff about rating ??

If you dont claim on your insurance for a period of time your rating increases. eg rating 1 is say 60% off your premium. When you first start driving you are at rating 5 (i think) eg. 0% and if you have at fault accitdents your rating decreases meaning you pay a % more. It is a method insurance company's use to stop people claiming on very small amounts and also rewards long term customers.

I aint had insurance before but thats the way i understand it works

I was told by Just Cars i think, that the fact the car has a turbo only changes the policy by $200-$400. I managed to get insurance in my dad's name through another company. It also helped that the car was registered under his name as well.

He was the one who enquired about the insurance, because it would seem suss to an insurance company if you call up asking it to be under your dad's name. Just search around and you'll find something eventually.

I pay about the same so silvias and Skylines must be the same and yes just cars was the only ones to touch me to My silvias NA till i get my P's cause then no one has to ride with me and Mum won't Sit in a turbo She is Scared i'm Saving for motor atm still got 3 months till P's

Starting to think about a GTR r32 but i don't wanta get 3rd party on one so i'll have to wait till i'm like 21 at least

This may provoke some thought.

Suppose the car in question has a total market value of $16,000 (market value of car in stock form + market value of modifications)

SCENARIO 1 - FULL COMPREHENSIVE INSURANCE

Premium - $2,080

Car's insured value - $13,000

In the event of a write off:

Insurance payout: $13,000

Less excess paid: ($1,850)

Less premium lost: ($2,080)

Net amount recovered: $9,070

Recovery: 57%

SCENARIO 2 - 3rd PARTY PROPERTY INSURANCE

Premium - $400

In the event of a write off:

Salvage value of wreck: $5,000

Premium saved (ie by not paying full com): $1,680 (difference between full comp & 3rd party)

Excess saved (by not claiming): $1,850

Net amount recovered: $8,530

Recovery: 53%

SUMMARY

Try performing the above calculation with a premium of $4,000 and it soon becomes apparent that, in the above scenario you are actually better off without insurance (in the event of a write off).

As long as you can drive, full comp is not worth it in my opinion. Better insurance would be an excellent alarm system, a few advanced driver training courses and a skidpan day.

IMO full comp insurance becomes attractive:

a) when your car is worth more than $20k and/or

B) when your premium and excess are reasonable (ie rating 1 over 25)

ABOUT 3RD PARTY FIRE THEFT

Just Cars offered me $4,000 fire and theft cover. If you read the fine print, you will find that, for example, if your car is recovered from being stolen with $5,000 damage, the insurance company will declare your car a write off, pay you $4,000 and take your car. Well this is the understanding I got from reading the fine print, please correct me if I am wrong.

Thx heaps Greg. That really puts it into percpective. I just always just asumed having full comp in the event of a writeoff was by far the best option. But with that Logic and, dam thats some bloody good logic, it seems its pretty much never worth it for us youngens. That post is the single most helpful thing ive read on this whole site and we all know thats sayin alot.

Thx agian

    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
    • Do you have an IAT sensor? It's worth checking it to see. You may be suprised how little gap you actually need to flood your engine with hot air. (I tape up my airbox for a reason) :p
    • @KinkstaahKrinkle paint the "silver" alloy, not the red filter frame Engine bay heat won't be a issue worth worrying about as the silver alloy blocks it off on 3 sides, as for the top, the bonnet seals most of it and the big OEM CAI intake snorkel is still fitted in its original position  I will head into Clark's Rubber when I have some time to grab some pinch weld to tidy up the alloy after I paint it As for performance, I honestly wasn't expecting any, the only reason I got it is because the intake noise sounds cool to my old ears when I'm feeding it the beans Sometimes it's the silly things you do in in life that gives the most fun, and I do love anything that makes cool car noises In other news: I survived 4 nights at sea with Jackie not throwing me over board, holidays are continuing now as we are currently chilling at the Beachcomber in Toukley, after taking the coast roads from Sydney in the MX5, top down all the way, Toukley is where I spent a good deal of my youth holidaying during the summer months, there's lots of reminiscing going on,  and lots of beaches and old houses to visit Next on the list is to head to Batemans Bay for a few days, but we will take the Commodore out to stretch its legs, then Commodore hasn't really moved for months
    • There’s probably people who’d like to do it and then when it comes to putting their hands in their pockets they’ll all disappear into the shadows
