Thats pretty damn quick.. The vid doesn't really do it justice.

5-6secs from 100km/h to approx 175km/h.

My little old RB20det running 1bar used to run 0-175km/h in high 13 secs which was 7-8secs from 100-~175km/h.

Get your launches sorted!!! :rofl: 8secs is shocking!!

I can see how the DET head would be benifitial with acceleration.

They rev so much easier and quicker. Well my RB30DET does anyhow. :rofl:

But remember the first 2 secs of video I had'nt let clutch out :rofl:

With a clean launch I used to be able to pull off a 5.2sec to 100km/h which is fairly close to yours with lots of wheel spin.

Obviously its the dodgy stop watch method but it was 99% repeatable so it was around the mark.

Are you running LSD?

I have a RB20DET in a VL with pod, 10psi boost and 3" turbo-back. It's not bad but I wish I had a bit of extra off-boost torque, once it hits boost it gets up and boogies though :headspin:

Thats the beauty of the RB30, in that video using all the gears (Ableit with slow shifts due to *whispers* holding camera in one hand) it takes 9 secs from 100 to 200kmh....I have another video of it, leaving it in 5th, going from 100 - 200kmh and it still does it in 10 flat!

Yeah that extra litre makes a *big* difference. I used to have a VN 5L with 200rwhp cam and chip with a shift kit, so im missing the torque and gear chirping. The RB20 should be more fun with 4.11's and a T28 though. Even now; when it eventually manages to hit full boost its alot of fun, but if you're in the wrong gear at the wrong time, its can be disappointing

A mate of mine ran a 15.8 in his stock auto 304 VL down the 1/4.

That's not as bad as you might think. What you have to remember is that trimatic V8's have 2.78 diff gears, compare that for example to an R32 skylines 4.3 diff gears.. apples and oranges.. chuck a 4.11 minispool and mild hydraulic cam, lifters and stiffer valve springs in and they're not so pathetic..

Considering most import Skylines have pod filters, raised boost and exhausts I don't think it's that unreasonable. While the V8's might be able to keep up or even power ahead on the straights there's nothing like a Nissan or Toyota to teach you a lesson through the twisties :headspin:

I used to own a VS 5ltr 5speed that ended up with a mild cam, ecu & 3.5" exhaust.

I found it to be quite gutless under 3000-3500rpm. On par with a R33 RB25DET I've driven. But it still more than the rb20det.

Even before the cam it was still fairly gutless and would bog down under 3000rpm.

The Auto's have a way of hiding this in the old GM EFI 5ltr.

The stock 3.08:1 diff ratio doesn't really help matters. First gear used to easily pull 70km/h. From a 5speed. Thats too high.

i have a vl turbo i like nothing better than blowing skylines away it has a 25 head on a 30 bottom end. tomei cams. cam gears . high mount manifold .50mm wastegate. t70 turbo running a r33 5 speed. 411 diff gears and a mini spool but after all of that i would love a skyline a lot newer stylish and a lot sleeker

If your going to get a Commdore it should be an 8:) I would so love to buy a VL Brock Grp A, tremec 5 spd, alloy efi heads, Motec twin throttle body injection, Harrop brakes and stroker crank. 18: simmons , Tremec 5 spd...give the thing to a bloke like Ian Tate and get back a punchy 400-450hp engine, that will rev to 6,500rpm , sound tuff, run low 13s, maybe high 12s. With some shocks and susp tweaking it would be such a cool car...

...ive had my R32 for to long now, and would love a change, but dont really have the 35-40k required to build this sort of car:( You just cant beat imports for bang for buck:)

Not for everyone, but i think it would make for a nice change from my R32, but $17,500 as a starting point:( Id be lucky to get that sort of money for my R32 which would destroy and std 19 year old Brock:(

I agree with you though, a comodore should be an 8, not a turbo. I love the sound of a lumpy V8. Rock up at the lights next to an old phase 3 or something and the idle is enough to scare you. ha ha the RB20 sounds like an accord next to one of these.

@ around 80-100kms the dial jumps. Is that wheelspin or just a dodgy old tacho?

Although hard to notice it was wheelspinning in 2nd up to around 90kmh then speedo needle drops back to around 80 as it hooks up & accelerates back up to 100, then change into 3rd :(

The VL makeover was introduced in 1986, the R32 1989, the VL was only a facelift on a design that dates back to 1976, which in its day was quite advanced, VL certainly nothing to be ashamed off, Nissan to has certainly produced there fair share of 'Clangers' :D

Yeah, if you look at the VK Commo you can see where the VL came from.

And speaking of clangers --> R31 Series 1 Skyline (yucko). Series 2 they got their act together.
